Guest guest
Oh wow what a blessing!!!!! Now Im not sure if I got this right....are they wanting info from you about Ds or are you planning on adopting this child? What a wonderful opportunity to help them through this. May God Bless You As He Has Us ~Angie~ ~~DREAM BIG~~ An extra little chromosome, that's all it is, you see. Where all of you were born with two, She was blessed with three. DS adoption question... Got a call from my brother - his wife's cousin who is 16 is pregnant. Had triple screen then amnio and the baby has Downs. Thankfully they are Catholic and are adamantly against abortion. Girls parents want to have the baby adopted (they wanted this prior to knowing anything about the baby having Downs) - the girl has stars in her eyes and thinks it'll be fun to be a mom. Not saying that a 16year old couldn't - but from what my brother says she's not real mature. Anyways - any info I can get on adoption of a baby with Downs would be greatly appreciated. They called my brother and asked for my phone number to get info about Downs - and their greatest fear is that babies that are put up for adoption are just institutionalized. They are very against that too. Please help me have good info to give them! Michele inVA
Guest guest
No I'm not adopting... they had been hoping all along to get the new mom to agree to giving the baby up for adoption - but now with the DS they are worried that no one would want the baby and it would be institutionalized. They don't want that either - they want a happy family/good home for the baby but especially with DS they don't think their 16 year old is capable of being a single mother. Guest guest
, There are several of us in this group who have adopted children with down syndrome. What specific info are you looking for? Tell us and I'm sure one of us will have the answer. I will tell you this, there is a very long waiting list of families wanting to adopt a child with down syndrome. And I also know this.. of the parents of kids with ds, those that I know who have adopted children with DS are some of the strongest advocates for their children that I know. Guest guest
I agree with about the waiting list and the strong advocacy of parents who have adopted children with disabilities. Both of my children came to me through adoption...it is a wonderful option for everyone involved. Guest guest
Well - I just have so much compassion for this situation - and am SOOOO thankful that they will not consider abortion - I just have so many things going thru my mind - just thinking about how frightening this is for them - but also that I adore my daughter (she's 5 with DS) and can't imagine life without her... but of course this girl is 16 etc. etc. etc. Anyways - I'm just wanting good solid info - on adoption, placement, how to find a social worker, services etc that I can get to them. I'm thrilled to be able to tell them that many couples are waiting for a baby with DS. I guess I'm just so happy they want this baby to have a great life and a loving home - and I want to help them get info to make that happen. I appreciate all the website info etc that has been sent to me! Michele inVa Re: DS adoption question... , There are several of us in this group who have adopted children with down syndrome. There are so many families out there who WILL jump at the opportunity to adot this child. Where do they live? There are many adoption agencies that she could speak with. Many have open adoptions alos that will allow her to stay in contact with the fmily and child. My little guy with DS is adopted and we are so thankful that we have him. Guest guest
Robin Steele with the down syndrome association of greater Cincinnati has a list of families that is waiting to adopt a child with down syndrome. She can also provide the parents with information and resources to help them make up their mind about parenting or adoption. She is an excellent resource. We are one of the families on her list and highly recommend they either email or call her. Her email is rsteele@... You can also visit the web site for the association. Robin is known throughout the United States. I have CC'd this to Robin as well in case they do contact her. Hope this will help.
