Yes and Yes!! But for my Micah it is sensory driven. He will only eat

certain foods because of texture. Work on that now by introducing new foods

and

textures. We gave him all kinds of foods and textures as a baby to play with

and experiment with but no luck. His food repetoire still consists of

mostly, crunchy, salty and soft foods. Every once in a while he willtry

something

new but it is very difficult. If Ben has issues with new foods getr on it

right away. We even went to anutritionist but she was not much help and my

speech therapist was a joke she wanted me to force feed him. It's a process we

still work on but I don't let it get to me like it did.

Hi sheila,

My is very picky with food. He eat fish sticks , chicken nuggets,

hotdogs, the tops of pizza ( scrapes off the tops and doesnt eat the harder

bottom crust and it has to be ellios ) , mashed potatoes and most fruits ,

cheese curls, and I have proof that he has eaten meatballs in school but not

at

home. lol For Breakfast he still has baby cearel and cotton candy yogurt (

YUK ).and of course we cannot forget Ketchup !!! that goes on almost

anything !! I have spoken to the dr and she doesnt seem worried . I buy

school

lunch for him in the hopes that he will want to eat what he sees his friends

eating ( it worked with the meatballs) He is 9 snd i know that sooner or later

he will try other things .

Good luck

( dreaming of the day I do not have to make fishsticks lol )

Shelia,

What a cute story - your Ben seems to have my Sammy's

personality! We haven't had any fixations on one

particular food, what we battle is a dislike of

certain food textures and tastes.

Sammy will sort through her plate and pick out chicken

pieces if they are not finely diced and shredded. She

will do the same if fruits are not ripe to her liking.

We have no problems with veggies on most days.

The one time she tried to eat only Jello for a meal I

told her no and just kept offering her something else

in between bites of Jello. Once the jello was gone I

didn't get more, even thought she kept signing more. I

would put other stuff on her plate. When she starts

tossing food our new rule is the meal is over and she

gets cleaned up and put on the floor.

Good luck,

~

would only eat Vegemite sandwiches or Vegemite toast for AGES.

Now he is texture driven- if it is hard to chew he will try to get out

of it ( eg like overcooked steak) - he does prefer softer food. But he

is a brilliant eater and will eat all of his dinner , veggies and all, 9

nights out of 10. He refuses to eat ice cream with topping- and is very

adamant about how he eats his food- eg NO topping, but yes to sprinkles,

Vegemite, not peanut butter, lemon juice and sugar on pancakes. He is

very stubborn and will not budge somedays- even tho the rule at our

table is you must try everything at least once. Tis hard to make him

try it sometimes, but try it he will. He is more stubborn than his sibs

allot of the time, but by the same token, now he is older he is

sometimes the best eater here.

Aussie Leis- mum to 9 , Natasha 5 and 3.

Character is like a tree and reputation like its shadow. The shadow is what we

think of it; the tree is the real thing.

Sheila,

My son's is applesauce. This kind of thing can be a

HUGE help when it comes to intro of foods. When we

want him to (very picky eater and is bad for his diet)

then I dip whatever food in applesauce and he gobbles

it up. It is gross sometimes like with meat YUK. but

it does the job. My favorite is refried beans dipped

with applesauce. Mac and cheese dipped with

applesauce... We probably go through a huge jar

everyother day :)

they where small. they have outgrown it. thoroughly. they don't like applesauce

at all anymore.

Hi,

My son is 15 1/2 mos old and we are in the same boat. We had to up his OT from

one hour per week to two hours per week. He also has never had a feeding tube

and he has never aspirated (I don't think-what is that? If it's gagging, then

he does do that.) What are these nectar thick and honey thick foods you are

talking about? I'll ask my OT tomorrow morning about that. I am glad your

grandson has progressed to small fruit pieces and small cereals. That is great!

I really have nothing to offer to you other than to let you know that you are

not alone. It's frustrating (I'm so tired of buying out the baby food aisle.

lol!). I hope you get some answers/help on this topic for your grandson from

this board. I am very interested in what the gurus have to say about this. :)

Sincerely,

Mom to n (5 next month) and Chase (15 1/2 mos), Ds & IS

PS- I am in the North Los Angeles area. If your son and his family are close,

maybe we could meet up? :)

feeding issues

Hi all, I am new to this group. My grandson, is a little over 2 years

and doesn't like to eat anything that isn't pureed. He doesn't live in

the same city as us, but my daughter-in- law always keeps me informed.

Anyway, they're not sure if he just doesn't want to eat things he has

to chew or if he can't. He will eat small pieces of fruit and small

cereal that will dissolve in his mouth. He won't eat things like

chicken nuggets, etc. Feeding has always been an issue but he hasn't

had to have a feeding tube. He just seems dis-interested in eating. He

also aspirates; he is now on nectar thick which is a step down from the

honey thick and has had his tonsils and adenoids removed. My son and

daughter-in- law haven't met anyone else whose child has the same type

of feeding issues. The waiting list to work with a speech therapist

who can work on feeding issues is about 6 months. Any suggestions on

what may have worked for someone else? He is doing great in a lot of

other areas such as walking, signing and talking. He is my first

grandchild and a true blessing to our family, I can't imagine our

lives without him.

Noah wouldn't eat anything with any real texture for his first couple of

years either. He still has some issues; won't eat noodles of any kind, and

is a vegetarian...I should say a " carbotarian " cause he sure doesn't eat

many veggies! Cheese pizza, bean burrito, PB & J, are his staples.

We had help with feeding from an OT, not a ST. Maybe there is an OT

available in your area sooner than six months...That seems really excessive,

where are you? I know of some ST's graduating this year...they should move

to wherever you are! My only advice is to just keep offering him

everything, as you never know what is going to " float his boat! "

Good luck and welcome to the list!
