Guest guest
A big thank you to everyone who responded to my question for After 3 Options for Adena. It seems the majority of you had children who went to a private preschool paid by the school district or a class combined of typical and special needs kids. I talked to our speech therapist today and she wants to go with us to help pick a teacher for Adena. She used to work for the school district and she said the speech therapist that replaced her had already quit and they had a big shortage of speech therapists. So what happens to the kids at that school? She replied they don't get speech therapy! Her mom is in charge of special education here at the Education Service Center where I work and they have advised several parents to pursue due process but apparently no one has followed through. Our speech therapist also advised that parents who rock the boat get sent to a place that provides private therapy instead of providing it through the school district. I have a feeling we are going to be up for a fight. I don't mind Adena going to a 1/2 day for just special needs and then maybe 1/2 day with typical. She does so well around typical children and models their behavior. I would like some input from those of you that have been there on questions I need to ask these teachers when we are visiting the classrooms and what I should look for. Our speech therapist said there a couple of teachers who are very rigid and she knows Adena will not function well in that type of environment. I definitely agree with that! I would also like to find out why they don't have an inclusive program. I have a big problem being tactful but I am learning so I appreciate your help!
