Guest guest
I am SOOOOOOOOOO MAD right now! Doesn't the school know that I am a VERY resonable parent, and that if they are reasonable, I won't make a stink. Step over the line, and WATCH OUT! has been very stubborn lately, polite and sweet, but just sitting and not doing some work. Parts of the day are fine (not consistent what she does or doesn't do), and others are just stare blankly at paper, even on work she is fully capable of doing. Different issue, and we're working on that. Frustrating to all involved, but since she is doing some work, we just have to keep trying different strategies. So, today, I was at the usual place to pick up, and she didn't come out. Teacher brought kids down, no . Sent Sammy over to find friend who I was suddenly picking up, and when came back with Sammy, still no . So, I said, " I wonder where is? " said " well, she was in my class today, but isn't now. " I asked " why was she in your class today? (since is in a 1/2 combo, and is in 3rd grade, on different buildings and floors of the school....... seemed strange). answered " because she wasn't being a proper 3rd grader and doing her work so she had to come back to 2nd grade. " Oh, the mouths of babes. In a state of shock, I found in the Resource Room with the aide, didn't say one word (because I knew I'd regret it), took , and went straight to the principal. She was in a meeting, I opened the door, excused the interruption, told her we needed to take TODAY, and would she please call me. She said " do we need to have an IEP? " , and I replied, " Yes, but you still need to call me today. " Haven't heard from her yet, but she'd better. Asked a few more questions on the way home. Apparently, the classroom phone rang, and after the teacher answered, she told the class that was coming to their class because she wasn't doing her work in 3rd grade and had to come back to second grade. Soon after that, and her aide arrived, and sat down next to . I asked how long was there, and she said " about 15 minutes. " I asked how did she know that, she said " well, the lockdown drill was 11 minutes, and came before the lockdown drill a few minutes, then left a minute after it was over. " So, this suggests to me that this was a planned event, teach her a lesson be making her be a second grader, but doing it during the scheduled lockdown drill so she wouldn't miss anything important in class. It wasn't at a random time, like as a frustration for her not doing her work (which she may not have been doing), since school starts at 8, they do morning stuff, then take their spelling test (which she did, the aide told me), at the lockdown drill was scheduled for 9:15 (according to the whiteboard in the office). Oh, and to make it even worse, this was her last year's teacher who could do no wrong. I see 2 major issues to be addressed here... was demoting her a grade for a bit an appropriate solution to getting her to work (it didn't work at all, apparently) AND what right did the 2nd grade teacher have to make that announcement to her class......... respect, privacy, I can think of many reasons that was totally inappropriate! I have been ready to request an FBA to address the refusal behavior, but in the past, she has gone through stages and then gotten back into the swing of things. I think it's gone on longer than her typical stages, and was ready to go on this. Now it's an absolute AND there will be a nasty IEP meeting to disucss it. OK, I'm calmer now, thank you all for listening (or deleting, LOL). Hopefully the princiapl will call before I have to sit with the girls selling Girl Scout cookies at the grocery store! , mom to (11), (9 DS), and Sammy (7)
