I had lost about 20 lbs. Everything that I had lost is now back, plus a pound or two..... =P This means that my losing spree has stopped, and now I'm gaining. Something I really did not need to do. Shortly after starting the Spiro though, my primary care dr. put me on Avandia, as well as the metformin I was already on. Now he has me on a combination of the two, avandamet. Can't say which medicine it is, but I'm certainly not a happy camper about it..... This is the most likely to cause weight gain. If spiro is controlling your K you shoulf need less DM meds. What is your HB A1C. This is whast should be used as a guide to how your DM is doing. What goal have they given you? On the other hand, my New Year's resolution is to attain better health, meaning better control of my diabetes, more exercise, and a better mental(and spiritual) attitude about life in general. It's been a tough year at my house. I lost my mom to cancer in February, and it was not long after that that I started showing signs of the low K..... I'm assuming that traumatic events can trigger the onset of such things. Dr. Grim, any comments on that? Dont know about data on stress and K but if ACTH goes up and cortisol goes up DM and K can worsen in theory. May your pressure be low! Clarence E. Guest guest
> > Has anyone out there experience a fast weight gain after having > > their adrenal tumor and gland removed I have to admit I saw the same problem. I have always been thin, and never had problems gaining weight, just the opposite. On radiation therapy for prostate cancer, had a great deal of tissue damage and pain. Weight dropped from 168 to 159. To cope with tissue inflamation, it was decided to try spiro. Went to Inspra when it became available. Current weight is 180, on a 5' 9 " frame. Agree that increase muscle mass is important to maintain weight. I work out in the weight room three times a week. Off for 2 weeks, due to holidays, and up a couple of pounds. Guest guest
Thanks to all who answered my inquiry. It looks to me that Spiro can cause you to gain weight in the beginning, but that it is possible to lose it. Dr. Grimm, can I get the DASH book on Amazon? For those that switched from Spiro to Inspra, what caused you to switch. I'm curious, if you'd like to share. -----Original Message-----From: lowerbp2@... Guest guest
I ordered the DASH book from Amazon, here's the link: http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/0743410076/qid=1104696372/sr=8-2/ref=pd_csp_2/104-7243196-2129534?v=glance & s=books & n=507846 Watching the sodium can help with weight, I have fluctuated by as much as 10 pounds or 1 dress size in a day just in water weight when not eating properly. I started out at a higher dose of Spiro and was able to lower it as my weight dropped (real weight, not just water... I kept a close eye on body fat percentage). I was on a very restrictive diet and consumed very little sodium. I found losing weight to be difficult whether on Spiro or Inspra, I averaged a loss of 2 - 2.5 pounds per week over a 6 month period during which I consumed 500 - 600 calories a day in the form of protein supplements (under very close medical supervision). I've gained 20 pounds back after a month long course of steriods which I've had difficulty losing. For me exercise is the critical missing component. My muscles fatigue and cramp easily although I used to be very strong. I originally attributed this to low K, but I take supplements to correct this. I worked out moderately last Tuesday and my legs are still sore today and cramp up on stairs, etc. I've got a Dr. appt. tomorrow and will probably ask to have my K checked again. (I also think I did something to my rotator cuff, too. I fell down the stairs about two months ago, grabbed the railing and felt something pop. Its a little better, but still hurts when I reach in certain directions or carry something heavy. I just chalked it up to age, though, not meds. Going to be a ripe old 35 next month!) As for Spiro vs. Inspra - I changed to see if it would get rid of a small amount of galactorrhea (never completely dried up after nursing my son). It did seem to help, not 100% but things have improved. I wrote a longer summary a few weeks back, but here is the latest and greatest - menses regularity has greatly improved on Inspra, but along with this came PMS and break-outs which I didn't have on Spiro (although on Spiro, periods varied between 2 weeks to 3 months apart). Poor libido - no change (although, it's hard to get in the mood when you're cranky, 20 lbs overweight and look like a pizza-faced teenager!). Actually, I was thinking about sending Dr. Grim a note for his thoughts on switching back to Spiro. I hope this helps! RE: Conns syndrome post operative Thanks to all who answered my inquiry. Guest guest
Hi Everyone and Happy New Year!! I found my copy of the DASH book at Waldenbooks. I think any of the major Book outlets would have it or can order it. I'd be very surprised if Amazon didn't have it. I switched from Spiro to Inspra 10-13-04 after 8 months on Spiro. I was getting (gynemastis)mispelled, but resulting in sore and enlarging nipples and breasts, not cool on a male. I gained a little weight on Spiro, but I blame that on feeling so lousy and not being as active. Spiro was a lot more unsetting to my stomach than Inspra. I was on 150 mg a day of Spiro and am now on 200mg daily of Inspra and nothing else. I have tried lot of ways to reduce the dosage but it seems to be the magic amount for me. Just reducing 25 mg a day returns a lousy feeling and headaches. Another big factor for me is the sodium intake, you are on the right track going for the DASH diet. I maintain a diet of 700 to 900 mg daily of sodium. If I mess up I have a headache in about 2 hours and it takes about 2 days to return to normal. I can't fast from sodium for say two meals and then eat a full days sodium amount in one meal or I get the same result. I can handle 200 to 300 mg in a meal if I go over, I start with the headache again. ?????On a side note, if I screw up and overdose myself with sodium, for about 2 days my urine has a very distinct and extra horrible odor???????????? Thanx for being in this forum for me, I hope this helps. Sincerely, Randy <>< May we all be DASHing! ><> Thanks to all who answered my inquiry. Guest guest
Hi I'm not complaining, but I lost it. It looked kinda odd on me. I look more feminine now, although no one would ever have taken me for a man.
