Guest guest
I called Children's hospital and spoke to the head tech who spoke to the radiologist about Myah's test. They want to papoose her to a board and put in an NG tube to get the barium in her. I know for sure that she will not tolerate the procedure on her own so I called to see what to expect. I really don't know if this is the way I want to go. From what I understand the specialist can do an endoscopy under anesthesia-which just seems more humane to me. My heart just aches to think of her being strapped to a board for this. I know she will be thrashing anyway and oh my. She has had this done one other time a few years back for blood work and it was awful. I promised her and myself that I would never do that to her again. I guess to me I just think if there is another way to get the info, then let's try that method. Maybe I will just take her for the ultrasound (which will be bad enough holding her down) and get to a specialist for the endo. Any thoughts? stomach problem question Here is Myah's scenario. I have an appt with the ped tomorrow to get her examined, but I always like you input as to what I need to ask for. The most recent problem is that, today for the second time in a week, Myah woke up throwing up what appears to be bile. She will then be on the toilet about 2 times, not diarrhea, but lots, sometimes bright yellow colored. She will lay around, say her stomach hurts and then by about 3-4 hours later she will be fine. The school called this week to tell me she is complaining that her stomach hurts every morning and will be in the bathroom at school too. She has always been a kid to bend over and out will come whatever she just drank or ate. That has been excused by the ped as a purposeful act, which I know it is not-why would you want to do that? lol We went through this same problem a year (or 2) ago and I had her tested for Celiac which was normal. It seems like it comes and goes, but recently is here to stay. After these eposides she will just lay on the floor and is really pale with dark eyes. She keeps telling me she is sick and needs a doctor. She has been on Adderall for about 3 weeks and everyone close thinks this is the problem, which it may be, but I keep thinking that we have had this " cycle " before and that if the medicine has anything to do with it, it could be because she does not eat very much on it. The weird thing to me is that if it is the meds, it's happening in the AM before she even gets it, so it just doesn' t make 100% sense to me. Myah did have doudenal atresia repiar at birth if it matters. I am just wondering about her gallbaldder or something like that. Has anyone been through this that can give some advice? Some doctors do not understand our kids' increased risk factors and will tend to not look in the unusual places. Guest guest
has had many upper GI series. We haven't had to strap her down, even when she was younger. I always went into the room with her, and stood next to her, as close as possible. We practiced before we went to have the x-rays done. When I was pregnant with , I postponed 's x-ray until after delivery. And we never, to this day, never call an x-ray an x-ray. We are simply going to take pictures. The upper GI's were never fun, always had to book extra time to allow for 's reluctance to drink the barium, but we managed to get them done without using the papoose board. Yes, a specialist can do an endoscopy under anesthesia, depending on what they are looking for. If they are looking at motility issues, then the endoscopy may not address that. The ultrasound is the least invasive, you might want to start with that. You can also practice that at home with a round object, like a shampoo bottle, and some aloe gel, and rub it on her belly. You can also be present at the ultrasound. One thing about the barium for the UGI, no matter how they get it in her, it is very, very constipating. I always limit 's solid food intake the day before, giving her mainly soups, jellos, etc. When we get home from having the ugi done, I always give her some milk of magnesia, followed by tons of liquids. The barium pretty much turns to cement inside them, the quicker you get it out, the better. Sharon H. Guest guest
HI- Is an upper GI series the same as a swallow study? If it is then my daughter has had 4 and she has not had to be strapped down either. I went with her and talked about Dora and sang and played with her to make it a game. Last week she had an endoscopy under anesthesia and she did very well. Dawn Sharon <huie@...> wrote: has had many upper GI series. We haven't had to strap her down, even when she was younger. Guest guest
I could only hope that Myah would behave that way, but experience tells me otherwise. I think as a combination of her OCD, tourette's and sensory issues, she just can't take anyone in her space. I had to hold her down and she kicked the doctor in the head just as she was trying to touch her stomach. She does not take to any explanation either. she will just say no, no, no I don't want it...lol It takes 3 of us to have the ENT check her tubes. I know it's got to be a sensory thing of something becasue she loves going to the doctor and can never wait to go. I call it the love/hate situation. she really wants to do it, but gets too overwhelmed. We finally got her weight for the first time in years last month because she would not stand on the scale. I talked it over with my husband and I think we are going to go for the US, which we can pin her down for and then get to a specialist for further planning. At least we will get something. Guest guest
The only problem with anesthesia is that there are more risks involved and she may have to have an airway depending on how she reacts which could cause a problem if they are trying to evaluate the esophagus I think.. recently had to be papoosed to do two extractions. they gave her nitrous oxide before giving her the needle with novacaine which really seemed to calm her down. Guest guest
My daughter just had and endoscopy with anesthesia. Because she has reflux they also intibated her (have an airway I think...) too. She did great and she didnt have any complications. They told us that with adults they do not use anesthesia but with children they do. They told us that her esophagus looked fine but we are still waiting for the results of the celiac biopsy..... Guest guest
We had Myah's ultrasound this AM and all is fine with that. They called us already. That is good news for us. I am so glad we didn't do the upper GI. It took 3 of us plus the tech to do the ultrasound. They played movies and practically danced on their heads, but Myah just didn't care. lol At least we know that her gallbladder is not in immediate trouble. Guest guest
Most endoscopies are done using what is called " IV Conscious Sedation " , using drugs that sedate and provide an amnesic effect (so there is no memory). The most common are Versed, Valium. Having had Versed before myself for a wisdom tooth extraction, I recommend it, it was wonderful! So even though the docs may use the term " anesthesia " , that is not what is commonly done. Be sure and ask. Sharon H.
