- you're incredible!! You know just everything!!After reading some of your posts, I looked at the aerogarden in a shop here recently. The shop guy told me you have to buy their seedlings that come in the little tubes, and you can't just plant your own seeds. I can't imagine you would go along with this, and that you'd definitely plant your own seeds rather than buy their seedlings. If so, what's your method for planting them? Thanks heapsJaneOn 11/04/2011, at 9:43 PM, wrote: Rusty, you can make your own nutrient tea in the Vitamix-just buzz up some veggie scraps and a small piece of seaweed (available at health food stores-use kelp, dulse, nori (not the roasted kind) arame, hiziki) in enough water to make a thin "tea". Strain in a mesh strainer or nut milk bag. Just put a tablespoon of the tea in your aerogarden once a week and store the rest in a jar in the fridge. I have never used the nutrient tablets that come with the aerogarden-don't know whats in them, so I don't want to use them. > > I am thinking of returning my aerogarden that I got at Christmas. > > It is a three plant one. Thanks, Jane. You do NOT have to use their silly plants. I use all sorts of homemade pods for growing things. You can buy a "master gardener" set for the aerogarden, but I found it to be expensive, and quite frankly a pain in the butt! I made my own "pods" by coiling rockwool and/or coir (coconut fiber) into my own pods. I suspend them from the little coffee creamer containers you see in restaurants, or I use the coffee pods from a Keurig coffee maker (my brother has one, I get him to send me the empty pods. I will NOT be held captive by a gadget, and the aerogarden was no exception! We should be able to use what WE want in it!! I make my own nutrients, as I said, so the pods were no exception to the rule. There is ALWAYS away around the "rules". I put my own seeds of whatever I want to grow in my

homemade pots, so I can grow whatever I wish. Right now, I have a crop of VERY naughty peppers growing, that look EXACTLY like the part of a man's anatomy that they think with...and I do NOT mean the brain ! Wow that is amazing. You are creative! So if my plants die then I will try your method for new ones. Right now my dill is looking pathetic. I have the 3 pod one as well sounds like the same one as Kathleen's. The thyme and basil still look ok.

Thanks for that . I knew you'd have a way around it. Jane On 12/04/2011, at 7:06 AM, Berry wrote: Thanks, Jane. You do NOT have to use their silly plants. • 9 months later...

Guess I would have to choose to buy a dedicated VM container, if I chose

to use our homemade compost my husband makes in his gadget in our

sunroom! The ick factor would be too much for me in using my food use

containers! LOL He bought this composter a couple of years ago. It

looks like a styrofoam cooler, and has a auger and tray below for

finished compost to fall into. The electricity powers the auger on a

schedule and keeps the unit warm enough to optimize composting. Works

great, turning food scraps into compost in a few days to a week. He does

get liquid in a small drip pan at the bottom, so I guess I could mix

some of that in. In fact that might be just the solution. He puts in

fruit and veg scraps, egg shells, and once in a while something dry such

as sawdust to help absorb moisture (his own sawdust from his shop so we

know what is in it) and I got rid of some buggy cereals in it too, which

would not work for you due to your allergies, but works for us, so far.

VITAMIX, lol! I just buzz up any veggie scraps, a little sea weed, and a pinch

of baking soda, peroxide (food grade) or whatever nutrient I think the plants

need, and put a few tablespoons of it in to the aerogarden base. Repeated calls

to aerogarden, and much research, has failed to turn up what exactly is in THEIR

nutrient tablets that come with the gardens. They claim they are organic

BASED...too vague for me. Lots of things can have an organic base, then too

much other stuff added in! I am concerned with things like growth stimulants

and plant hormones, not to mention the tablets themselves are bound with wheat

and corn based ingredients, and I am allergic to both of those, so I avoid the

nutrient tablets-the Vitamix works a charm, as usual!
