Google Boutenko divorce and you'll get the story. Sad.The Green For Life book is why I'm a Vitamix demonstrator by the way. Read the book, started drinking Green Smoothies with a regular blender, got off wheat and sugar, started feeling better (had been REALLY sick for 7 years prior), broke a blender per month until the Vitamix Road Show came to my town, watched the demo, said to myself, "I could do that" and the rest is history ;-)

Hi Lea Ann

I just finished reading one of her books, which was very

interesting.  Gave me some ideas.

I googled - as you suggested, but have only found a word or two in a

forum, rather then even how long ago they separated.  Suggestions or

link?

I have the Green For Life book as well. Not sure where I put it, but

I did read it. I am needing to find it, because I discovered when I

downloaded her program (app) for the iphone/ipad on green smoothies,

that she does not use cabbage or carrots or "other starchy veggies"

in her smoothies. I never thought of cabbage as starchy. I need to

read the book again to see if I missed that part.

She does this because she is a proponent of food combining. According to the "rules" of food combining, Greens go well with everything, but starchy veggies do not. I have found that some people do REALLY WELL with food combining, but that others have no need to worry about it (me). I have a VERY good friend who ALWAYS had serious digestive "issues" and it was getting to the point that they were doing expensive testing and seriously worrying about it. I gave her my copy of the "Great Taste No Pain" books and she started following that plan (it's all about food combining) and her issues have stopped completely and she's lost 15 lbs. If you go to this page of my website: http://worknotes.com/FL/VitaMixLady/Agapemom/ap14.aspx and click on the words, "Great Taste No Pain", you will find information about this program (these books). I find that people all have unique metabolisms (there are 3 major groups) and that the metabolisms create unique "weak links" for different populations. At one end of the spectrum the "weak link" is the digestive systems, and at the other it is the hormone / energy system. My "weak link" is my hormone / energy system, my friend's is her digestive system. It is easy to know if you need to keep starchy veggies out of your smoothies… you will feel bloated and/or uncomfortable after those smoothies, but not after a green smoothie without starchy veggies like cabbage and or carrots in them. :-)

On the subject of digestive issues. I am taking my 13 year old daughter BACK to the specialist today. Last week a doctor saw her and gave her 40mg of Omppracole and 3 other medicines for her reflux. Reflux has a history with our family dating back generations. My daughter was born with it but somehow after taking her off mediciations when she was 5 until now she seemed ok. Once on the 40mg of Omppracole she started to experience severe stomach pain. I took her for an ultrasound which showed nothing. Then I spoke with my father who was also on this medicine but his doctor took him off 40 because it was to much and gave 20. I was also told by the same doctor (that I now think did my daughter wrong) that smoothies were NOT good for her digestion. Another doctor in this practice asked me to come back in today with my daughter at 11:30. This is a practice that takes months to make an appt. I have a

feeling the doctor we saw gave us really bad advice and now this other doctor wants to fix it.

My question is has anyone had any experience or advice on this matter..and when the doctor says smoothies are bad for reflux is that true? my daughter heard that and now won't touch them but I don't want to deprive her of the health benefit. Thanks for any helpful input.

Marilyn, have you considered undiagnosed food allergies as a possible CAUSE of the reflux? Doctors are very slow to mention dietary allergies as a contributing factor in digestive issues, although it should be obvious. Often, the reason reflux "runs in families", is that the family tends to all eat the same types of foods, and an allergy could be involved (allergies are often hereditary too) I suffered for most of my life with reflux, IBS, GERD, and a host of other gut problems, as did other members of my family. Once I made the connection between certain foods and my symptoms, and did an elimination diet to identify my allergens, I was able to heal completely from ALL of my digestive issues. The family members that have done the same no longer have problems, and those that scoffed the idea that they might be allergic to a favorite

food still suffer. It is certainly worth considering for your daughter. To say in broad terms that "smoothies" are bad for digestion is irresponsible of your doctor-if the smoothie contains nutrient packed things that you are NOT reactive to, they can be very healing. Quite likely yours docs vision of a smoothie is the kind of milk based crap sold in fast food places, not the nutrient rich smoothies you can make in your Vitamix. By identifying and eliminating what your daughter is reacting to, you would likely see MAJOR improvement in a matter of days, if not hours, and could probably eliminate ALL of her meds (most of which usually contain the very thing she might be allergic to in the first place) Feel free to contact me if you want more info-I have an allergy group that can help you sort it out if you wish to try identifying her allergies.

It costs nothing to give food combining a try - Google it (there are tons of free resources and information about it online)…

So , a better way to approach the Dr might be to ask: can she eat the

following fruits and vegetables? And when he says yes, then you just don't

mention the word " smoothie " but simply use those fruits and veggies prepared in

the VM and you will still be following Drs advice. Unless there is something

else involved, such as my husband the severe diabetic with GERD. using the VM

for his breakfast (he used oats, milk, cinnamon, and I forget what else) it shot

his bloodsugar up from too quick digestion due to being pre-digested by the VM.

When he ate the exact same breakfast from a bowl not VM'd, his blood sugar was

much better. So, other than his problem, if you can get more nutrition in via

the VM using foods Dr approves of, there is no need to use the often

mis-understood word smoothie in front of the Dr.

On the subject of digestive issues. I am taking my 13 year old daughter BACK to

the specialist today. Last week a doctor saw her and gave her 40mg of Omppracole

and 3 other medicines for her reflux. Reflux has a history with our family

dating back generations. My daughter was born with it but somehow after

taking her off mediciations when she was 5 until now she seemed ok. Once on

the 40mg of Omppracole she started to experience severe stomach pain. I took her

for an ultrasound which showed nothing. Then I spoke with my father who was also

on this medicine but his doctor took him off 40 because it was to much and gave

20. I was also told by the same doctor (that I now think did my daughter wrong)

that smoothies were NOT good for her digestion. Another doctor in this practice

asked me to come back in today with my daughter at 11:30. This is a practice

that takes months to make an appt. I have a

feeling the doctor we saw gave us really bad advice and now this other doctor

wants to fix it.

My question is has anyone had any experience or advice on this matter..and when

the doctor says smoothies are bad for reflux is that true? my daughter heard

that and now won't touch them but I don't want to deprive her of the health

benefit. Thanks for any helpful input.

the underground veggies(carrots, potato, turnips etc) were the starchy one's.

She does this because she is a proponent of food combining. According to the

" rules " of food combining, Greens go well with everything, but starchy veggies

do not.

I have found that some people do REALLY WELL with food combining, but that

others have no need to worry about it (me). I have a VERY good friend who

ALWAYS had serious digestive " issues " and it was getting to the point that they

were doing expensive testing and seriously worrying about it. I gave her my

copy of the " Great Taste No Pain " books and she started following that plan

(it's all about food combining) and her issues have stopped completely and she's

lost 15 lbs. If you go to this page of my website:

http://worknotes.com/FL/VitaMixLady/Agapemom/ap14.aspx and click on the words,

" Great Taste No Pain " , you will find information about this program (these

books).

I find that people all have unique metabolisms (there are 3 major groups) and

that the metabolisms create unique " weak links " for different populations. At

one end of the spectrum the " weak link " is the digestive systems, and at the

other it is the hormone / energy system. My " weak link " is my hormone / energy

system, my friend's is her digestive system.

It is easy to know if you need to keep starchy veggies out of your smoothies…

you will feel bloated and/or uncomfortable after those smoothies, but not after

a green smoothie without starchy veggies like cabbage and or carrots in them.

Shortly after becoming a vegetarian, my boyfriend took me out to dinner at a macriobiotic restaurant we liked. I ordered a cabbage salad that was absolutely delicious (carrot-tahini dressing). Unfortunately, I was so stricken by nausea the following day that I couldn't go to work. I've been very careful ever since although I have no problems with braised cabbage.

I ADORE cabbage, but have issues even with what I grow myself. I worked around that by growing baby bok choy, tatsoi, and other Chinese "baby" cabbages. The baby ones haven't had time to develop a starch, so I can enjoy the cabbage flavor without the problems. One bite of regular cabbage, even what I grow myself, causes problems, but no worries with the baby ones (very easy to grow in containers for anyone who wants to try it) Sometimes, it is just the age or variety of the cabbage that causes problems. I grow "normal" red and green cabbages for my daughter-she has no issues with them, thank goodness.

Thanks for the info. Will do more reading. I do think I am going to

work on making my smoothies a bit simpler (instead of packing as

many different types of fruits and vegs in them as I can find).

Non-starchy vegetables

include the following categories: leafy greens such as

lettuce and spinach; cruciferous vegetables like broccoli,

cabbage and bok choy; and allium vegetables like onions,

garlic and leeks. Cucumbers, squash, peppers and tomatoes –

botanically classified as fruits – also fall into this

category. (For a comprehensive list, see

below.)

Starchy vegetables,

defined in the report as roots, tubers and plantains (most

notably, potatoes, cassava and sweet potatoes), differ from

their non-starchy cousins in their nutrient content and

calorie count. While non-starchy varieties provide just 5

grams of carbohydrate and 25 calories per serving, starchy

vegetables have three times the carbohydrates and roughly 80

calories per serving.

So I'm not sure

why she doesn't consider cabbage as "greens".  I know that

like broccoli, cabbage can cause problems with people with

thyroid "issues".  I LOVE cabbage, but it doesn't love me.

Doesn't cause me to be gassy - makes me TIRED.

Carrots are in

I am thinking I need to work even harder at "feeling my body", since

I have not really noticed, other than milk, corn, bananas,  and

walnuts, any foods that "bother" me. Walnuts are a real no no, I get

asthma from them. Yet can eat foods related to them, as in same

family, such as avacados. I am allergic to latex, which is also

related to banana.

Boutenko's the Green Smoohie people

Non-starchy

vegetables include the following

categories: leafy greens such as lettuce

and spinach; cruciferous vegetables like

broccoli, cabbage and bok choy; and

allium vegetables like onions, garlic

and leeks. Cucumbers, squash, peppers

and tomatoes – botanically classified as

fruits – also fall into this category.

(For a comprehensive list, see below.)

Starchy vegetables,

defined in the report as roots, tubers

and plantains (most notably, potatoes,

cassava and sweet potatoes), differ from

their non-starchy cousins in their

nutrient content and calorie count.

While non-starchy varieties provide just

5 grams of carbohydrate and 25 calories

per serving, starchy vegetables have

three times the carbohydrates and

roughly 80 calories per serving.

So I'm not sure why she

doesn't consider cabbage as "greens".

I know that like broccoli, cabbage

can cause problems with people with

thyroid "issues".  I LOVE cabbage, but

it doesn't love me.  Doesn't cause me

to be gassy - makes me TIRED.

Carrots are in the "starchy"

list.

So cabbage is really considered

She does this because she is a

proponent of food combining.

According to the "rules" of food

combining, Greens go well with

everything, but starchy veggies do

not.

I have found that some people do

REALLY WELL with food combining,

but that others have no need to

worry about it (me). I have a VERY

good friend who ALWAYS had serious

digestive "issues" and it was

getting to the point that they

were doing expensive testing and

seriously worrying about it. I

gave her my copy of the "Great

Taste No Pain" books and she

started following that plan (it's

all about food combining) and her

issues have stopped completely and

she's lost 15 lbs. If you go to

this page of my website: http://worknotes.com/FL/VitaMixLady/Agapemom/ap14.aspx

and click on the words, "Great

Taste No Pain", you will find

information about this program

(these books).

I find that people all have unique

metabolisms (there are 3 major

groups) and that the metabolisms

create unique "weak links" for

different populations. At one end

of the spectrum the "weak link" is

the digestive systems, and at the

other it is the hormone / energy

system. My "weak link" is my

hormone / energy system, my

friend's is her digestive system.

It is easy to know if you need to

keep starchy veggies out of your

smoothies… you will feel bloated

and/or uncomfortable after those

smoothies, but not after a green

smoothie without starchy veggies

like cabbage and or carrots in

them. :-)

Keeping a very detailed food journal is a great way to isolate foods which may be bothering you. Often, foods don't cause a "reaction" for 2 or even 3 days. Depending on when the offending food hits the digestive track, it can cause a reaction any time in transit. This is why people don't often recognize food allergies or sensitivities-it is hard for them to realize that something they ate a day or two before is causing today's migraine, skin rash, etc. It is also wise to document anything that goes ON the body, such as skin lotion, sunscreen, shampoo, toothpaste, etc. It is usually very easy to see a pattern to what may be causing problems. Learning to listen to my body has been the best thing I have ever done. I can even regulate and adjust my thyroid meds just by paying attention to what is going on

internally. Most of us know more about our cars than the inner workings of our bodies!

Unfortunately I am not a journaling person. I have tried and tried

to keep the Weight Watchers journal (points) and just can't seem to

keep up. I do try to pay attention though and do figure some stuff

out. But thanks anyhow for the ideas.
