Guest guest Posted January 21, 2007 Report Share Posted January 21, 2007 I wanted to share some good things that have happened lately. On the 9th we had THE BEST IEP ever! I was very reluctant to have Nic move to this teacher's classroom in the beginning of the year but boy was I all wrong about her. All I brought to the meeting was a pen. I agreed with all of their suggestions, goals etc and they welcomed my suggestions openly. I could clearly see everyone had Nic's best interests at heart. His teacher started by THANKING ME for not putting limits on Nic and for pushing him when I know he can do something and for not being in denial about his behaviors (she didn't use those words but that was the gist). She said by us being proactive in his learning and working with them on ways to manage his behaviors, makes Nic's learning experience so much better. I have to say, this was the first time a teacher has thanked me. I was so shocked all I could say was , " You welcome. " (DUH) LOL There was laughing and joking, it was so surreal. They were all sharing funny and cute things Nic says and does. They also shared the inappropriate things and we addressed each one and came up with some new strategies to see if we can curb them. Nic goes to " Pro Social " every Friday in the typical 3rd grade class. The teacher was there and says how much her students love having Nic there. He doesn't last the whole time though. He's good for about 30 minutes then it gets overwhelming for him. He doesn't like loud functions. There are 4-5 girls who have gotten very close to Nic. They are like " mother hens " to him and the teacher has to remind them that they are there to help him not do things for him. I said I'd like to see if we can get some more boys to interact with him. So that's another thing they will work on. The teacher told the principal that Nic is almost done with the 1st Edmark program (he's completed 145 lessons out of 250) and wanted to order the second one. She said it costs about 500.00 but it can be used with up to 100 kids (it's software and there are only 5 kids in the class this year). The principal didn't hesitate and said go ahead and order what he needs. She called me at home a couple of nights later and said she was looking through a catalog and saw a bunch of stuff she thought would be great for Nic. She asked what I thought and said if she was going to put an order in then she wanted to make it a big one. I said go for it. The order was approved! She has been making up little books and homework sheets using the words he's learned from each lesson. She illustrates them and all. He does very well with them and really is loving to read. She also makes his homework sheets herself too. Last week we had our hearing test and dental appointment at duPont Children's Hospital. He did SOOO well! He is still deaf in the left ear but he was so cooperative and followed all the directions from the audiologist. They did a tymp and 3 different " booth tests " . Dental was the best. In the past we basically had to sit on top of him just to do a cleaning. He would scream bloody murder, it was awful. He got up in the chair and even allowed them to do 3 x-rays!!!!! I kept telling them no way he'll let them do x-rays--wrong again! Apparently Nic lost a molar that we didn't know about. It shouldn't have come out until age 11 or 12. They wanted to do the x-ray to be sure there wasn't a problem and to see if the permanent tooth was up there and it was, it's coming down nicely. He did resist the cleaning but that all has to do with his sensory issues-doesn't like anything that vibrates. He whined a bit but no screaming or crying. All in all it's been a good year so far.
