Guest guest
Reading some of the messages from this past week it looks like some of you are into worm composting. I tried it a couple of years ago, but it didn't really go too well. I ignored the worms for too long and they died. My set up probably wasn't the best either. I don't remember exactly what I used, but it was a large plastic tub similar to the ones Lea Ann uses for her container gardening. I am planning to start container gardening this Spring to have fresh veggies for the Vitamix and would love to use some worm compost and tea to help the plants along. I welcome any tips that people have on a good set up, and pics as well. Also does anyone have a good source for worms? Thanks -

Guest guest
There are a lot of styles on ebay too, http://shop.ebay.com/?_from=R40 & _trksid=p5197.m570.l1313 & _nkw=worm+bin & _sacat=See-All-Categories I just used some of the ideas there to make my own, and I have one cute little bin that I bought from ebay for about 15 bucks-has apples and worms on it, lol. I buy my worms at a local baitshop-only ever had to buy one container of them, since they are prolific little critters when well tended. I am always able to dig up a good batch for the bins come winter, then I keep them in the basement until spring and turn them back into the garden. I put three or four worms in each container and the raised beds. I don't bother to put them in small containers that I can work easily on my own-just the ones that need the worm magic. For the smaller containers, I put some worm castings in each before I plant. It is amazing how rich (but non smelly) the castings are! Guest guest
, you can make a super easy bin with those same type Lea Ann used. Just use a nail to poke plenty of vent holes in the lid and across the top of the sides (enough for cross ventilation from side to side, but small enough that no worms can escape. I put an aluminum cookie sheet poked full of holes on some rocks in the bottom of my bin before I put soil in, so there is plenty of room for the castings to run off into the bottom. I use UNprinted newspaper, which I get free from my local newspaper office-they are happy to give me their end rolls, which still have plenty of paper on them. I don't use printed paper, as I am allergic to soy which is used in the printed paper. The paper gives the worms something to build nests with. It's quite easy to do. As I mentioned, I splurged on a cute "worm bin" when I first started and it was worth the purchase-maybe 15 bucks or so-once I saw how easy it was, I made my own. The key is to give the worms layers to crawl in, so they can go down deeper to where it is wet, or up if they want to be dry. I water down the side of my container only, so the top layers stay dry. From: p0werstr0ke99 <jemery72@...>Subject: Worm Composting Date: Saturday, March 26, 2011, 8:24 PM Reading some of the messages from this past week it looks like some of you are into worm composting. Guest guest
That was interesting information about worms. I'm not into composting but I do worm "rescue" after heavy rains drive them from my lawn onto the asphalt driveway. I pick them all up and put them on lawn rocks so they can be safe until they are ready to go back into the dirt. My husband thinks I'm nuts but I don't want to risk running them over or stepping on them. That would bum me out! Fran In a message dated 3/26/2011 11:26:51 P.M. Guest guest
- Thanks for the info. Did you poke any holes in the bottom of your tub for drainage or just use the rocks and cookie sheet? Guest guest
Ahhh - nothing like enjoying a green smoothie while perusing through the group's messages. Thanks Lea Ann. Their bins look like they would be pretty easy to duplicate. With my past set up I think I had holes in the bottom of the bin and the tea drained onto the lid of a second tub and it was pretty messy to collect the tea for use. The idea of using a second bin with a spout seems like it would work pretty well. Thank you for all the info as well . I've seen the bins on Feebay before. They sure look like they would work pretty slick, but it is hard to justify spending almost $100 on one. > > > Reading some of the messages from this past week it looks like some of you are into worm composting. Guest guest
I have a small hole at the bottom to which I attached a siphon type hose (that is a fancy word for where I poke a straw in it to get the liquid out) Not the MOST effective way, but it works well enough! From: p0werstr0ke99 <jemery72@...>Subject: Re: Worm Composting Date: Sunday, March 27, 2011, 1:30 PM - Thanks for the info. Guest guest
My kids who don't mind putting a poor worm on a hook to go fishing think my compost worms are gross. Guest guest
LOL, no, you weren't dozing. I have two grown sons, ages 25 and 27, who are ACTUALLY my step sons, but I raised them from 2 and 4, so I consider them my own. Guest guest
A local nursery here once sold " worm Farms " that were made from the narrow plastic rolling two drawer carts. They used the top drawer for the worms and compost, with holes and a screen in the bottom which allowed tea to drain into second drawer. Could think of many variations for this setup. Guest guest
I have a son (my older one who lives here) who used to call fishing "fish murder" when he was young. My Dad took him fishing when he was about 4 and he was horrified that Grandpa actually planned to kill and cook the fish. He eats fish now, but won't go fishing and does not want to see you actually kill one. Of course he has no problem with the fact that steers are killed for his burgers. haha Velda On 3/27/2011 12:08 PM, Lea Ann Savage wrote: My kids who don't mind putting a poor worm on a hook to go fishing think my compost worms are gross.  I'm fascinated by them and love to turn over the veggies to see just how many of the little red wigglers are chomping away at it.  And it is amazing how quickly they tear through the produce - turning it into beautiful, black, moist soil.
