Banning Disney and Barney (Non Down Syndrome)

Hello everyone

Yesterday we had the Christmas party at 's school and it was a lot of

fun. Afterward I learned, however, that our state department of education (in

Mo. it is called DESE) is banning anything related to Walt Disney (who grew up

in Missouri by the way), Barney, magazines, catalogs, puzzles, toys, and dolls.

They had to send home a bag of Mickey Mouse toys played with in order to

comply with the law. This is ridiculuous. They have been told by Jefferson

City that they must teach the kids how to cook, sew, do laundry, and make things

(believe it or not they did not ban arts and crafts!) Well the living skills

are important, and learning them at an early age is fine, but taking away all

this other stuff is stupid. Kids learn through Disney, Barney and the rest of

the banned items as well.

So far this ban is just for the 22 state schools for the handicapped in Mo.

However, DESE (the state dept. of educ.) also administers the special ed.

programs throughout the state and oversees all of the public schools as well so

I am sure this ban will spread. It sounds to me like someone must have been

bored and had nothing to do but make up silly rules or perhaps they were

offended by a Disney movie or had a kid who played Barney all day.

In any case, if you live in Mo. or have a child who goes to a state school

anywhere, be where. (And since the bureaucrats around here aren't really smart

enough to think up anything on their own, they may have copied this from another

state)

Merry Christmas

Dad to , Kristi, (all three Down syndrome and in public school)

and (Cri du chat syndrome and in state state school)

Husband to C. in Mo.

Uncle Daddy to and in California (both Down syndrome)
