Guest guest
Also wanted to mention that TESTS CAN be wrong. I was in contact with pregnant Mom that was SURE she was going to have a baby with Down syndrome. All tests indicated... from what I recall, even the amnio! Mom had a 2 vessel cord and was over age 40. She spent the entire pregnancy devastated. She was looking for an adoptive home. Low and behold...........baby girl arrived..........no chromosome issues. Wonder how many babies are aborted and the tests were wrong? Just breaks my heart. Laurie

Guest guest
Had a friend that the same thing happened to. She had an amnio and discovered baby had an extra 13th chromosome and was only 1 of 10 children ever to have this disorder. The outcome would certainly be death within the first few weeks after being born, blah, blah, blah. My friends decided to see it through and not terminate, but were scared to death of the future. Turns out the child is perfectly normal! Now, as far as the daughter having children in her future, the extra chromosome thing may come into play then. She definately has the extra chromosome. Guest guest
That AFP test is only 60% accurate. Mine came back normal and of course, Reece has DS. My cousin, and many other women I know, had elevated AFP levels and their child does not have DS. Re: DS babies and Abortion Also wanted to mention that TESTS CAN be wrong. Guest guest
My AFP was negative also with , this happens A LOT...my neighbor said with her 3rd child she was told he had DS but was born only because they didn't believe in terminating - he did not have DS as the AFP showed...I know someone else that went by an Ultrasound saying their child had DS and terminated and have often wondered why they terminated with just an ultrasound and a doctor's word that the child had DS - she was only about 14 weeks along also...she said the doctor said the child had a crease at their neck and short legs which meant DS...I thought he was a quack and her for taking the doctor's word on a test that no matter how many " dimensions " it can show is only 70% accurate when determining the sex of a child much less a fetus that looks like a " teddy bear " at 14 weeks... It seems that society can no longer handle " differences " and has to be perfect...if you listen to parents talk about their kids they are " perfect " at everything they do an never have any disappointments...heaven help them when they become an adult and their boss fires/yells at them...where will they be then? Run home to mommy for a hug! Sometimes I think we are going back words as a society! Re: DS babies and Abortion my afp was neg with sydnie as well. Guest guest
Jackie, This is so cute!! 's new thing when he sees a group of teen girls together, is he will smile at them and actually say, " Hi, girls " practically winking at them, clicking his tongue and doing the pointer finger thing. So, I guess DS also has the flirt gene?!?! And btw, the teen girls love it because he is only 9 and wears size 6 clothes...so he is this " miniature man " , it's cute for now... Guest guest
Also wanted to mention that TESTS CAN be wrong. From memory and I can't remember the statistics - all of these tests are not 100% accurate. Probably like 98% accurate but not sure. So there would be a very small percentage of babies aborted because of a false result. In reality when a negative result comes back a Dr. should do a follow up - though I'm not sure if the negative results has something to do with the testing or the 'make-up' of the mother/child.
