Guest guest
I know someone who got them for her child w/ CP - I've never heard of the " diabetes " angle. Can you get a pre-approval letter from the insurance company? - Becky In a message dated 11/8/2006 4:10:47 PM Eastern Standard Time, drf218@... writes: Has anyone had professionally made orthodics done for their child w/ DS? I took Nic to a podiatrist who said he needs them. I called the insurance company 3 different times. Every time, they said he's covered up to 500.00 (they cost about 300-350.00) but when I call the businesses that the insurance company says are authorized, they tell me, no only if he has diabetes. Guest guest
Hello My son Tommy has been wearing orthodics since he was about 3. We were going to a doctor and getting them but my husband's insurance would not pay for them anymore. We started going to the Shriners Hospital and they go by your income so we don't have to pay for them. You might want to check into that. Hope this helps. Guest guest
has had them since she was a toddler. Origianlly they were ordered by our local Regional Center, and we didn't have to pay (unless you call having to hold a kid with sensory issues still while they make a plaster mold of their feet payment, LOL). The Regional Center PT would make the mold, and then send them off to be made. Now she has " Pattibobs " which are standard sizes, and she just goes to Regional and they fit her, order them, and they show up in my mailbox. That is, of course, when they actually return my phone calls that she needs an appoinmnet for new ones....... Can you get your insurance company to FAX the approval to you, so that you can shove it in their faces (nicely) and say " Make my kid his orthodics... the insurance will pay! " Good luck, Di wrote: > Has anyone had professionally made orthodics done for their child w/ DS? > > I took Nic to a podiatrist who said he needs them. Guest guest
Yes, has professional orthodics that go inside his shoes. Our insurance would not cover them. The Shriner's Hospital Clinic did them for him. They were wonderful!! Kym...mom to 5 including (9ds)
Guest guest
thanks, that's good to know. Guest guest
I'm not sure what exactly he has but when you look at his feet from behind, it looks like he's walking on the inside of his ankles. He also has developed bunions!! He's only 9! I call that " medically necessary " . Guest guest
I finally got an appointment with a place called Harry Lawall and sons. apparently they are in several states. The closest place was about 45 minutes away and they set him up for Tuesday!! I hope there are no snags when we get there. Di Re: orthodics has had them since she was a toddler. Guest guest
Have they ever used the term " pronation " ? Guest guest
Bunions!!! I never thought of it! Jasmine has a half-dollar size hard, thick place on the ball of her foot down under her big toe! I never thought it might be a bunion, and caused by her pronation! She wore orthodics from pre-school time until she was 8 or 9. I have been trying to get her PT to see that she needs them again, but she just keeps saying her pronation isn't bad enough. And the PT that made them origionally has since stopped working. So........ I will now get on the ball and MAKE someone prescribe them, and find a place that makes them and get it done. Bunions-that still blows my mind! Why didn't I think of that???? also, no one around here makes them like she did, so I will have to see just what's available. thanks for the insight once again, Toni-mom to Jasmine-15-and still in need of orthotics-regardless of what the PT thinks!! Guest guest
Actually, a bunion is a skeletal deformity. They occur on the side of the foot, either on the big toe side or the pinkie toe side. It is a bump caused by the squeezing of the foot into a unnatural position...think pointy toed shoes. The bump is actually the bones of your feet pushed out of place. What you are describing is a callous, which could certainly be caused by pronation. Karla in Texas-Former bunion sufferer (the pinkie-toe kind) Re: orthodics > Bunions!!! Guest guest
that's right, Nic's is on the side of his big toe. This summer he went to a camp. I just got a CD with all of the camp pics they took and there's one where he's on a water slide--perfect shot of his bunion! Di Re: orthodics > > >> Bunions!!!
