What does everyone tell their children?

Good Evening,

I don't post too often but here is my question. My oldest child,

Caitlin 7th grade was sitting on the bus today with Alley who has ds and is in

8th grade. Caitlin was showing Alley her scrapbook and when they got to a

picture of , my youngest who is 3 with ds, Alley wanted to know why he had

is tongue out. My Caitie said he had Down syndrome, to which she responded,

" What is Down syndrome? " . Caitie was shocked and didn't know what to say so

she just said, " it has to do with an extra chromozome, Lets look at the next

picture "

What and when do you tell your child with ds about ds? I am kind of

shocked that this girl in 8th grade is not fimiliar with the term.
