We are using Tenex ( blood pressure med ) for impulse control, those neuroleptics ( hope i spelled that right LOL ) are scary. We seem to have good control now, the only thing was CB got a little sleepy at first...now we are doing fine.

Tenex is just like the Clonadine that we use for Karac, and I think it is great. I agree with you.

I'm glad CB is doing well. karac is doing well too. Sunday after I made Karac read he told me "it is arduous". I know I use that word sometimes, but I don't remember when was the last time that I used it. It just makes me wonder what all he has in that brain! smile. Pat K

It appears that you are dealing with inexperienced doctors. I don't

think it is appropriate to prescribe and anti-psychotic medication

like Abilify for impulsivity. The response you got about Tenex is

much more appropriate for impulse control.

Hi Bill,

What do you think of Abilify for help with focus and concentration? My son has been on 10 mgs of Abilify for over 2 years now for his lack of attending in class. It seems to not make much of a difference at home, but the teachers say he is much easier to handle. I've been thinking of looking for other options, but I have no idea what all these drugs are for and what their side effects are too. Thanks for your input.

  • 2 weeks later...

My son's focus was doing great on Abilify the first month. I was giving

him 1/4 of the 5mg tablet. Reports from school have decreased the past

week so the doc told me to gradually increase to 10mg and if he is

still having hyperactivity, we will decrease to 5mg and ad Tenex for

the hyperactivity. On the 5mg he is just irritable. Cries and gets

frustrated so easily, I cannot increase it more than 5mg. This weekend

I took it down to 1/4 again, hoping that maybe b/c of his cold, it

caused him to be distracted.

I don't want to make him miserable....

Hi Everyone - quick update here. After 5.5 years on the same seizure

medication, is being switched over to Trileptal. We made the switch

yesterday and will increase the dosage during the next couple weeks. Right

now, he's on half of what he will be on by later on this month. Dr. Capone

wanted to see him and we went back to see him on Wednesday and he also

prescribed buspar for the anxiety and OCD. We start that after we are on

the full dose of trileptal. So far, 's OCD behaviors have

increased - but we also drove to West Virginia yesterday and returned home

today. He didn't have any typical structure in place.

I'm hoping things go well with these changes - I hate this trial and error

stuff - it took us a long time to find a combination that worked to some

degree and here we go again............

Why does the doctor feel he needs to change his meds?

had a neuro appointment 2 weeks ago. Because he's had three

breakthrough seizures since March (and a gran mal one after the appointment)

and he's gained alot of weight, they wanted to put him on trileptal and wean

him off depakote. Trileptal and carbatrol are like cousins, so we did a

quick switch there, but gradual dosing until we get to the max dose for

him). They feel the depakote really isn't workign anymore (just took edge

off to begin with) and that the trileptal will help with the moods, too. We

wont start taking him off the depakote until October. Meanwhile, his OCD is

a real problem. He has to tap the windows (and raise, lower them, pull

blinds, curtains, sheers, etc.....URGH!) and a few weeks ago, he put his arm

through one and got several nasty cuts (healed nicely with liquid band aid -

a must for all first aid kits!). The neuro wanted to consult with the other

doctors and get us back in to see Dr. Capone (which we did last week). So

for the OCD, we are going to try buspar towards the end of this month. I

have it all on a calender and Timbo screwed up on day #1! Katey said

had a better day today - probably being home helped.

The weight gain started earlier this year. The kid is on 40 mg of metadate,

enough for most people to have a small appetite. does not know when

to stop eating. He can open a package of capri suns and drink all 10 before

I notice. He can eat a bag of grapes, jethro size bowls of cereal, quarts

of ice cream, quarts of orange juice and oh gosh, gallons of chocoate milk

if I purchased that in gallon size (I don't). I tried buying chips in

individual bags (like Sharon told me to) - only to have him open EVERY

SINGLE ONE and eat them all. Fat Free pudding - yummy, but 6 in one

setting? It's a problem here and I try to buy as much low or no fat foods

as I can. I'm going to end up buying one of those rubber made chests that

can be locked and keep his favorites locked up.
