Hi, Jen.

Blending is easier but not necessarily better--it depends on what you want. This issue of juicing vs. blending comes up periodically, usually with new members, and beyond telling you that I personally do both and don't apologize for juicing, my suggestion is to peruse the archives.

As to "wondering why an educated person...," my reply would have to be "who knows?" People publish/post all kinds of lunacy (see my previous comment on how Google can be your best friend AND worst enemy). Does it really matter? The bottom line is that fiber is important (except to the few who can't tolerate it--they exist) and if your intake is sufficient and you're otherwise healthy, it doesn't need to be in everything you consume.

Fiber Menace

Hi all,

I've been reading about blending vs juicing. My common sense tells me blending is better (and easier), but I did come across this surprising info regarding Fiber. This author of "Fiber Menace" claims fiber is actually harmful. Yes, I know I don't really believe it either, but being the over-thinker that I am, I am wondering why an educated person would come to this conclusion and wondering if anyone has investigated any of this theory?

Again, I am not saying I believe it, but if anyone has any info as to why this guy is full of it, I'd love more info. Since I am not an expert on nutrition by any means, I'd love to be convinced he is WRONG and I know many of you are very knowledgeable on this type of matter.

Thank you!

People want to find a reason why their "diet" didn't work for them. He is just giving them a new excuse. I actually don't think this guy IS full of it. Fiber is important in the diet, but we as a society take IT to the extreme, just like we do with vitamins and supplements. Fiber is tossed into everything, and promoted as "healthy". The problem is, many products claim to have "a complete day's worth of fiber". The problem with that theory, is it is in so many everyday foods, that if you consume more than just "that" product, you are getting far more than you need in a day, which can lead to chronic digestive problems. Same goes for vitamins. Rice, pasta, cereals, juices, etc. are "enriched" or "fortified" with vitamins, and most people who consume commercial products are getting way more than they need without even realizing it, and often take supplements and vitamins as well. If the food industry would quit slipping stuff

into our food in excess, there would likely be a lot less ailments. The practice of enriching and fortifying foods started during war times, when food supplies were short, and the government decided to blast rice and pasta (staple foods) with vitamins to ensure that everyone was getting adequate "nutrition". So much of the real nutrition is processed out of food, so they spray crappy synthetic vitamins back in or on the food to make it have any nutritional value at all. If people were to eat REAL food, in a state that contains natural vitamins, minerals, fiber and the other nutrients we need, then yes-fiber would be a good thing. The overabundance of synthetic fiber, not so much. As said, best to eat what makes you feel good. If you feel a bit sluggish in your digestion, eat some higher fiber foods until you feel better. Otherwise, it is just overkill. I am one of the ones who does not do well with

fiber...and I wish the government would stay out of my bathroom by adding it to every product on the market! I saw spaghetti sauce the other day that said "with added fiber"!! Throw that on top of some "fiber added" pasta, and be sure to stock up on toilet paper to go with it. From: <kareningotham@...>Subject: Re: Fiber Menace Date: Tuesday, March 15, 2011, 8:54 PM

I think that added fiber and sources of fiber just for the sake of consuming fiber is probably not a good idea, but the fiber that comes naturally in foods I think is good for you. HOWEVER, we are all individuals with our own individual metabolisms and I am a firm believer that no one diet is best for everyone. I am sure that a high fiber diet isn't best for people who's metabolisms are more like the Alaskan Inuits who live on a diet that is heavy on meat and fat. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Inuit_diet or for the Maasai diet of meat, milk, and blood - http://wholehealthsource.blogspot.com/2008/06/masai-and-atherosclerosis.htmlMy point being, different people have different metabolisms and fare best on ratios of macro nutrients (protein carbs and fats) that suit THEIR Individual metabolisms based on their genetic make up. Since we tend to be a bunch of "mutts" genetically, some intelligent researchers have come up with ways to discover your own "metabolic type". Google this for some interesting reading...Back to the fiber specifically - I think your body will tell you if the fiber you are consuming in blended juices is a problem for you. Many find it is a blessing :-)

It's not even so much a matter of our GI tracts but this urge on the part of "The Anointed" to take the "too much of a good thing" approach. If a food is whole and it contains fiber, fine--it doesn't NEED more than it already contains. Why on earth would anyone want to add it to something like SPAGHETTI SAUCE? And PASTA?! (I'm assuming we're not talking farro here.) Good pasta is HOLY to me--those who would buy into "fiber added" deserve what they get (blecch). And if people want to eat refined food, that's their business--I LIKE refined food, although I don't eat it to the exclusion of everything else (I just put away a Kit Kat). But this couldn't happen if it weren't for what I call "food faddism." People are confronted with something new that sounds intriguing and, sheep-like, they jump all over it to the exclusion of common sense (I suspect this author is looking to start his own fad...I don't have a whole lot of use for nutrition writers). It would drive me nuts if I let it.

Interesting that you say you don't have much use for nutrition writers. Neither do I, which is why I haven't written a food allergy book, which has been MUCH requested over the years. I am a writer by trade, and a certified nutritionist, so I have as much "authority" and "knowledge" and credentials as many of these self promoting authors, but I refuse to impose my theory on others. I think people should be given the information they may lack, then left to make their own choices and decisions about it, which is why I eschew "canned" diets, where everyone is expected or "allowed" to eat only certain foods. To me, that is tantamount to having a book telling me which color shirt I should wear each day.
