Guest guest
Dave,I have a Costco membership and all the produce I have purchased from them has been fresh and delicious. Just for an example, whole pineapples are about $1-$2, a large bunch of bananas is under $2, 5 avocados for $6, thats all I can think of off the top of my head that I purchase on a regular basis from Costco. Their organic fresh produce selection is limited, but they do have a lot of other organic products such as 4 pounds of quinoa for $8 and other organic goods on the shelf. They also have a nice selection of eco friendly household products. They do have a selection of non-dairy milks and free range/organic brown eggs. I love shopping at Costco. On Tue, Mar 15, 2011 at 4:48 PM, <davidadupre@...> wrote: I have a Sams membership but am not satisfied with their veggies since they don't sell hardly any organic things. Guest guest
Hello Dave I am new to the group but wanted to add my 2 cents...at least in the SF Bay Area, Costco carries fresh organic fruits and veggies, including celery, apples, blueberries. In the frozen section-- peaches and assorted berries. The produce I am listing here is not inclusive, these are just part of the dirty dozen, high in pesticides, and I endeavour to only purchase these organic and I am happy Costco sells them since their prices can't be beat.  All the best, Barbara On Tue, Mar 15, 2011 at 1:58 PM, Bridge <kristen.k.winter@...> wrote:  Dave, I have a Costco membership and all the produce I have purchased from them has been fresh and delicious.  Just for an example, whole pineapples are about $1-$2, a large bunch of bananas is under $2, 5 avocados for $6, thats all I can think of off the top of my head that I purchase on a regular basis from Costco. Guest guest
Hi Dave and all. I'm a HUGE costco fan, and because we're military and have lived a litle bit of everywhere, I can tell you that the organic selection (really the selection of everything from wine to food items to clothing) at Costco varies A LOT by location. Like Barbara, when I lived in Cali I could get a pretty decent selection of organic produce as well as pastas, rices, grains, frozen veg/fruit and meats. They also carried organic convenience foods, tho I did not buy them so don't remember exactly what they had. Here in Alabama, there is a DISMAL selection of organics--especially fresh organics. I found the same to be true in Chicago and other locations. I do think that its generally true that Costco carries a slightly 'higher end' level of merchandise, so I woudl think your likelihood of finding organics wuold be better at Costco. They will always let you in free to take a look around. You may want to do that to see for yourself what they havei n your area. Guest guest
I wouldn't have responded had I not read Beth's reply but one of my friends is a Costco member and I've been shopping with her in New Jersey several times. Each time I've been there I've been completely underwhelmed by pretty much ALL of the produce, including the conventional, which is why I read the first few posts with some surprise. I'm guessing that my own rather insular experience would tend to substantiate Beth's own. Re: Sams or Costco? Hi Dave and all. Guest guest
I've been in the one in N Va (Sterling/Potomac Falls area) and it was shopping nirvana!! I could have something different out of that perishable/fresh food department every day for the rest of my life and probably not make a dent in the selection. The population in that area is an international melting pot which I'm sure drives the selection of products in that store. Sure wish we had a Costco here in Upstate NY. Oh well, we do have Wegmans where you can always find quality produce with an increasing selection of Organics. Guest guest
Interesting Price Club (the original) is here in San Diego and Costco produce here is the best and cheapest in town. Much organic, all fresh and quite a lot locally grown. That is most interesting the stores vary so much by where you live. The prices you are quoting are so much lower than ours however, yikes. Not sure why things are so much more here. Guest guest
Sadly, the only place within 100 miles I can get organic ANYTHING is out of my garden. I rarely go in conventional grocery stores, but when I do, I am always shocked at the garbage being passed off as "food". Bleckkkk. From: Sunshine <lightlady27@...>Subject: Re: Sams or Costco? Guest guest
About 2 years ago I let my Sams membership lapse. Last May, I went to Costco and got a pass to look around. I signed up that day. In the Nashville, Tn. area, the produce is fresh, crisp and mostly organic…..and far, far cheaper than the Whole Foods down the street from me! Guest guest
I am also a Costco fan, you have all probably noticed that from some comments. I buy almost everything there. I do find a lot of organics at our one here in Ontario, Canada as well. I am impressed by the quality of things and the frozen fruit selection for smoothies and the price is great. I also buy everything there other than food such as household items and even my clothes right down to my underwear and socks. I have an executive membership and find that by the end of the year I get a big cheque back so essentially my membership is free. You do have to watch their fresh produce though because sometimes it is not so fresh or not a good deal or you have to buy so much of it that it goes bad before you eat it all. The large bag of baby carrots is good though and they are organic! Sadly now though there is no more Sam's in Canada. The company felt it did not make enough money because too many people shopped at Costco instead of Sam's so they closed all Sam's here. There was the odd item that I liked to get at Sam's that they did not have at Costco (usually though it was the bad stuff like my cappaccino). When we had a Sam's I had a membership to both. I am a bargain shopper so I do watch for things at Costco that go on coupon and stock up then (big fan of stocking up on toilet paper and my kids tease me about that but now at their dad's they say they are always running out of.... yes you guessed toilet paper). Never run out at my house. The other thing that I watch for is for things that I want to go on clearance and often they do. If the price ends in '7' it is on clearance, ie. 39.97, 9.97, etc. Fresh produce never goes on clearance or coupon though but most other things do. I usually cannot believe the quality and price of furniture, light fixtures, etc. from Costco Ok that is enough of my Costco raving. Carolyn In a message dated 3/15/2011 9:49:17 P.M. Guest guest
Dave et al: I hate to go on about Costco, but here I go. If you do choose to join costco, consider doing the math on their Executive membership with the American Express credit card, too. With Executive membership, we always more than cover the cost of our membership with our rebate (you get a percentage back on all costcto purchases) and with the american express there is no fee and we get a truly obscene amount of money back at the end of the year on that. (It is up to 4% back on many items including gas, travel, etc REGARDLESS of where you make your puchases, but I beleive the highest % back is on Costco purchases) In addition, the amex customer service is excellent! Guest guest
Always read labels! :-)The 100% juice (in different brands - not just Welches) is made with only two ingredients: 1) juice concentrate and2) Vitamin C as a preservative.Juice Cocktails have lots of chemical preservatives I can't even pronounce, and high fructose corn syrup. To make it easy with Welches - white lids are juice cocktails and yellow lids are 100%. Old Orchard Brand has green lids for the 100% juice - I get this at Publix. The " high end " grocery store here is Krogers; and none of the grocery stores have anything like the pre-prepared food bar, salad bars and the huge bread aisle that Wegmans had. Check Wegmans.com to see where the locations and where the newest stores are opening. I make my list at their site online, it prints according to the aisle locations of my items and I can just whip thru shopping. carol k ===================================== ---- hatchjoyce <Joyce_Handy@...> wrote: Yes, you are so lucky to have Wegmans! The further one is bigger, and these 2 costco's don't always carry the same items. Some are the same, some are different. And different areas carry some different products. k -- Re: Sams or Costco? About 2 years ago I let my Sams membership lapse. Last May, I went to Costco and got a pass to look around. I signed up that day. In the Nashville, Tn. area, the produce is fresh, crisp and mostly organic…..and far, far cheaper than the Whole Foods down the street from me!
