Guest guest
Many coconuts ARE sprayed-it is the only way they are allowed in the country, often sprayed at the port of entry. The only way to tell for sure, is to feel the skin and see if it has a sticky residue-if it does, it has likely been sprayed. I have one source in Atlanta where I can get "safe" ones, but I have reacted to others. Unless it specifically states on the wrapping or outer label that it has NOT been sprayed, unfortunately, chances are that it has. Guest guest
Sure it can get through! Fruits, nuts, seeds, etc. are porous, and anything that is sprayed ON them, gets IN them. It would also get in when you cut into it. These types of things are designed to withstand rain and the elements-they do NOT wash off, which is one reason I harp on buying organic. (not all organic is unsprayed, mind you, but less so than conventional) From: Jen <nelson_jennifer24@...>Subject: Re: Coconuts & Chemicals Date: Tuesday, March 15, 2011, 9:18 PM I'm going to ask a dumb question....what does it matter since what you are eating is on the inside? Guest guest
Also I did open up one of the Best (brand) coconuts last night and it was purpleish inside. I read something about that online but have forgotten what it meant and need to take a few minutes to do another search. I tasted the water, it tasted OK and I still used it in my Kale/Mango/Cabbage/Pineapple smoothie and it was fine, I hope I don't die later today from a purple coconut. Guest guest
My dwarf banana tree was given to me by my brothers girlfriend, who grows them in her yard in Florida, but I believe it was smuggled in from Southeast Asia (shhhhhhhhh) Growing things indoors that are not MEANT to be grown in other climates is not a task I recommend for someone new to gardening. Many things need to be hand pollinated, certain climate conditions need to be recreated, etc. Not for the faint of heart or a newbie. Doesn't mean you shouldn't TRY though, but it really isn't something that I could "tell" you how to do-there are too many variables, and you would need to know how the plant would respond to conditions in its native habitat in order to correct things as it grows. I grow lots of wacky things as food sources, but more as a hobby that often WORKS as to give me food. It takes tons of research and time and you need to be pretty well committed to the cause, since it can be a VERY expensive hobby! Guest guest
Jen! You made me laugh out loud!! I'm still alive! Yes we are pretty much neighbors!I bought my first/only young coconuts from Joe Randazzos on Telegraph in Redford, I paid almost $2/coconut - and the first one had the purple tint. BUT this past Saturday I found 1 Liter of Zico Coconut Water from Trader Joe's (the Northville store) for $3 and some odd cents. The TJ's find seems to be the best deal I've found for the coconut water. I figure 1 Liter should last about a weeks worth of smoothies - hopefully it stays fresh for a week after it's opened. Guest guest
That is an excellent idea! Isn't it great that things don't have to go to waste like they used to? Even greens like spinach and kale can be frozen to prevent them from rotting unused in the fridge.
