Yoga Poses- shoulder stand, plough

Hi,

I was just reading a yoga DVD review that was written

by a Physical Therapist. This person seemed to

indicate that shoulder stand and plough are dangerous

poses and can cause injury - i believe the words used

were " contraindicated " and " inappropriate " . What do

you all think?

Personally, I find these poses hard to do and I do

make up modifications to them (I'll support my neck

and use a chair or stool for my legs to rest on so I'm

not going all the way back w/ my toes touching the

floor), but I'm not sure that these poses would be

inappropriate for all people - and I do find that i

get a great back stretch from doing them in a modified

way. I think w/ the proper instructor who knows how

to modify and suggest modifications they can be safe.

Of course, I'm not a PT or medical person -- though I

will admit there are probably some yoga poses that

should not be attempted just via a video or DVD but

should be done under the personal guidance of an

instructor. What does everyone else think? I'm

curious b/c my SIL is a PT and she always makes

comments about how " dangerous " yoga is....(of course,

she has never done any! And in all honesty is not the

picture of health or fitness...)

Curious,

Donna
