In my case I have here all the time this summmer. She's not going to

summer school. She will go to camp for 2 weeks, but all the other time, I

have to find ways to entertain her. She doesnt really have many friends. But

she will come places with me like the beach or wherever.

The numerous doctors appointments keep us busy and I try to put in fun stuff

between them. She will be getting braces next week, which I have put off

for this long. I dont really want her to go through any pain or unnecessary

suffering. But she really needs and wants them.

I/we will be going to MD to visit my niece in about a week. Then she will

go to camp and I will spend some time with my son travelling to NH maybe.

really wanted to work this summer- but I dont know what. Maybe next

year...

Have fun, Di. and Jackie- enjoy your respite at your class! LOL

I can sympathize with you Di, I feel the same way and all my boys are older!

Their needs are, " Take me here and take me there. " One wants a ride to weight

lifting, one to work, to swimming practice. I'm spending my whole summer

break in the car and at sporting events! Ugh!

starts ESY next week, but we are leaving for the shore on Saturday. I

can't wait to get away from Reading and all the running around! When we get

back I will be taking a masters course, since Don will be off for two weeks.

He'll get to see what it's like vacationing at home with the boys! My class is

8-5 M-F. I'm actually looking forward to it!

I put Nic on the school bus for the first day of ESY this morning! aaaaaahhhh,

peace and quiet!

Do I sound selfish?

It's just that I can't get anything done when he's home. He's constantly wanting

something he can't get himself, or trying to cook something in the microwave

with no one around, or wanting to go swimming which means I have to sit out

there with him while the house gets ignored, or one minute I check on him and

he's watching TV or playing nice and the next he's GONE!

Never a dull moment with him! LOL

But I love the little guy to death!

Now I'm off to clean out my basement!

Well I put Micah on the bus for ESY

this morning also and was told he was deleted from the program!!!!!!!!

Spent the day on the phone and it seems someone is getting crossed wires that

he

is only suppose to be getting related services twice weekly.(The school

itself however has him listed in the program) When I lookked at IEP it said a

half day summer program is warranted for him but then in another spot shows

just related services. They are playing games with me. I had all the

information sent to me including teachers name a room number for him to wear to

school today, which he did.. Central admiin. said " well he is in a reg. ed

classroom so he is not entitled to ESY

GRRRRRRRRRR!!! I said that's not what I was told at the IEP meeting. Thank

goodness advocate was there. We specifically asked for ESY and was told he

is entitled. I have put in call to her. So now we lose valuable time

waiting for head of elementary special ed to call me back. Oh the games we

play

when we are setting precedents in the school district!!!

That's what I said (about the IEP) and that's when they said they would have

the head of elementary special ed call me. I wonder how long that will

take????~~~~

What is a NOREP?? Being in a reg ed class shouldn't have anything to do

with it he is still considered special ed. Obviously I am not the only one

confused or why else would I get all the paraphernalia to start the program

with,

and the school even have him on the roster? Chess anyone lol, ya gotta

laugh or else you'd go nuts!!!

got her braces in May. She has done really well, has no problem going for

adjustments, etc. Of course, as she has told me numerous times, Dr. Pence is

handsome. I'm sure that makes it easier, and he also is very nice.

The flossing is hard. She can't handle it on her own, so I do it every night.

I found these little brushes that she can do, just can't get every space. We

continue to work on it though, as she will have these braces for 2 years. Two

months down, 22 months to go!

Nic will need braces-his teeth are a mess. Way too many teeth for his small

mouth. I'm worried about how that will go.

I hope she makes out ok.

The NOREP is the paper you sign that says what his placement will be. It stands

for Notice of Recommended Educational Placement.

Our NOREP has his regular school year placement and his ESY placement written on

it. My friend gets a separate NOREP which states where and when and what type of

program it is. Her son goes to Variety Club camp for ESY. Nic goes to regular

school for his.

We are different school districts.

What state are you in? Check you state's department of education/special ed

website for the requirements

PA states:

B. Notice of Eligibility and Content of ESY Program

LEA notice to the parent concerning ESY eligibility or ineligibility must be by

NOREP. The NOREP only needs to be issued if the LEA is:

a.. Proposing to add ESY services to an IEP that previously did not have it.

b.. Proposing to delete the provision of ESY services from an IEP.

c.. Refusing to initiate the provision of ESY services requested by the

parent.

d.. Proposing or refusing to change the provision of the ESY program.

When ESY services are offered by the LEA, the IEP that accompanies the NOREP

must contain the following:

a.. Description of the type and amount of ESY service;

b.. Projected beginning dates and anticipated duration of service;

c.. Frequency;

d.. Location.

Of course, as with all IEP team decisions, the ESY components of the IEP must be

individualized to meet a specific child's needs, and must be developed with the

participation of the parents at an IEP team meeting.

Sadly, I've just given up on ESY here, at least for the time being.

is fully included in regular ed, with pullouts for math

(daily/30'), speech (2x 30'/week), and OT (every other week/30 min).

Yet, the only choices she has for summer are either:

A. 4 weeks of DIS (speech and OT), which means trying to get to know

someone new who has to both assess her at the beginning and the end of

the 4 weeks.......... been there, did that........ stress, and no

progress (imagine that!) By the time you add transportation time

to/from the ESY site (typically on the other side of the district) she'd

be on the bus 2 hours for 1 hour of service. Oh, and there is the

transportation screw ups because of our semi-rural location, which means

either missing days or me throwing everyone in the car last minute and

driving her there because the summer driver is lost/forgot her/excuse of

the day.........

B. 6 weeks of 3 hours/day/4 days/week in a Special Day class with kids

of various ages and disabilities. Some kids are used to academics,

others not so much. The year we did this, the teacher was a regular ed

teacher, and boy, did that work out well (can you hear the sarcasm

dripping from my voice, LOL). Again, the teacher has to get to know all

the kids and their IEPs, try and figure out how to work on goals, and

then assess at the end to fill out the progress reports........ not much

time for academics. Plus, with the lack of routine for some kids, you

often see some lovely behaviors that are fun to mimic........ yeah.

Same deal for transportation, though she would get 3 hours of school for

the 2 hours of transportation.

Last year was the first year I finally said, " no thanks " to the entire

ESY mess (after a 2 hour " discussion " with the district director of

special ed) , and this past school year was 's best ever. So,

I'm trying it again this summer........ maybe she just needs a break?

Our school is moving towards what I call a " modified year round

schedule " , since we got out on June 21st, and we go back Aug 24th......

2 months off goes really fast. We read every day, and try to do some

writing and math (though that isn't as much fun!). Her RSP is going to

do some tutoring over the summer, so we may hook up with her with her a

couple times a week for some math and reading comprehension stuff.....

at least we'd have no " get to know you " time, and could just focus on

things the RSP knew needs to work on.

That said........ I don't get my ESY vacation :-( But, the kids go to

Vacation Bible School at church at the end of July, so I have 5 mornings

free, and it's the one thing I don't volunteer to help with..... I bring

snacks, assemble stuff ahead of time, but when I drop them all off at

9......... I'm outta there until 12:15, LOL. I wish there was just

regular old summer school at our school like we used to have....... 2

hours/day for 4 weeks, focusing on kids that needed remedial help with

reading, math and writing. Maybe they'll bring that back someday.....

then of course, I'll have to fight for the aide :-)

We're going camping at the beach this afternoon....... my 3, plus my 2

nephews, so we'll see how we're all doing after a week together :-) 2

little girls who think they are big, and 3 pre-teens who act like

teenagers....... yikes! DH and I are taking plenty of Excedrin (and

liquid refreshment!) We are renting a trailer, so it's really upscale

for us........ I will get to sleep all night without having to get out

and take some little one out to the potty....... there is one in the

trailer!!!!!! Oh, the little things that make me happy.
