Guest guest
So my big furry dog came in just a few minutes ago, wearing a lot of burdocks. As I pulled them off her fur (much easier than finding them later buried in her fur!) I thought to myself ... plant them! I thought it was just the root, but apparently (just done googling), the leaves and stems are edible too. Deb

Guest guest
For years, I just used a soda siphon, but my darling daughter bought me a SODASTREAM soda maker last year. With either, you can just make soda water out of regular water. I steep ginger, lime and burdock, fresh berries, or whatever else I want to flavor it with, then sweeten with agave nectar and add it to the fizzed water-DELISH! You can get soda siphons on ebay for about 50 dollars, or try to catch a Sodastream on sale. They are about 120 new. My daughter caught a sale at Kohls and got mine for less than 50! (Yep, I taught her how to shop ) It is wonderful to be able to make a natural soda without all the garbage in it. You can also make a slightly fizzy soda with water kefir, but I like that you can adjust the intensity of fizz with the soda gadget, and that you can have soda in an instant! > > > > So now I gotta ask ... how do you make homemade soda? Guest guest
One of my favorite Fentiman's concoctions! http://www.drinkfentimans.com/#pi Re: Burdock Clever girl! Burdock makes an amazing homemade soda! I grew up in England, and "Dandelion and Burdock" was our soda of choice. I gave up commercial soda years ago, but still make homemade burdock (now with ginger instead of dandelion) soda in the summer. Summer is the only time I drink any soda. I grow a small container of burdock every summer just for that purpose. I personally don't bother with the leaves, just the root. The scraps go in my compost tea. > > So my big furry dog came in just a few minutes ago, wearing a lot of burdocks. Guest guest
I'll tell you something even funnier--years ago I asked my friend Robin in London (currently a tax exile since his retirement) if he'd ever had Fentimans (I sent him a link). He'd never even heard of it; his response was " HOW do you FIND these things?! " (Fairway, of course.) This was after Sharwood stopped making Worcestershire sauce (it was VEGAN) and I made him tote a liter of 's Relish in his luggage prior to a visit here. Unfortunately, Australia and Asia were also on the itinerary...he commented when he finally handed it over " I kept praying for it to break. " Re: Burdock  Clever girl! Guest guest
On my last trip to England, I decided to bring back an insulated cooler full of cheese and other goodies as my " carry on " . One of the airport drug dogs " alerted " on my carry on, and I had to put it in cargo. Guess which package the airline lost!!! They found it and delivered it to me three days later!!! Three day old, unrefrigerated cheese that smelled pretty ripe to begin with is NOT a pleasantry to unpack! Guest guest
Also if you don't want to buy a sodastream you can do what I do. I just buy the syrup and add a capful to a bottle of seltzer water. Tony
Guest guest
That is perfectly fine too, if you don't mind it being tap water bottled in plastic and processed on the same lines as other ingredients. I avoid it due to my allergies. Otherwise, I would be perfectly happy with bottled seltzer water as a base for homemade soda, but I personally can't risk the cross contamination. As for store bought syrup, I would thing that contained the very ingredients one is trying to avoid. I like making it fresh and knowing what is going into it. It's half the fun! From: Tony Szpara <tszpara@...>Subject: Re: Re: BurdockTo: Date: Monday, February 21, 2011, 6:18 PM Also if you don't want to buy a sodastream you can do what I do. Guest guest
My friend Steve turned me on to English farmhouse cheddars (SO different from ours) and while I REALLY like Montgomery's, I'm not wild about Keen's; both are really expensive but sometimes I need a Montgomery's fix. Someone recently started exporting a particularly wonderful raw-milk Leicester that I LOVE but don't indulge in often because it's also awfully expensive and...oh, my...I'm off on cheese again and it's YOUR fault. Guest guest
Yeah it's not healthy but the soda stream syrups are a little3 better than store bought soda. If I'm going to have soda I'd prefer real sugar to High Fructose Corn Syrup. I don't have the room for a soda stream anyway. Guest guest
I didn't use the samples of syrup that came with my soda stream. I just make a simple syrup with fresh berries or ginger, lime, etc. Frozen soda makes delightful popsicles too! I often put whole berries in them so you get a nice little "surprise" when you work through the icy part. Watermelon or cantelope soda is delish too. MMMM, I am craving summer! Guest guest
The syrup in the Vitamix cookbooks is delicious but it's not a clear syrup; don't know how folks would feel about that in soda. Guest guest
What kind of syrup is it, ? I never look at my VM cookbook so I gave it to my mother. (I don't look at it only because I don't eat normal stuff, lol) I personally could care less if it's clear or not. Guest guest
Stacey,It is really yummy and easy too. Equal parts cinnamon, garlic powder, salt and itaian seasoning coat chicken liberally or stuff under the skin and bake as usual.Last night I just coated the skin was good but the meat was just plain so with the leftovers I've stuffed it under the skin. should be betterKim in OR From: Tony Szpara <tszpara@...>Subject: Re: Re: Burdock Date: Monday, February 21, 2011, 6:18 PM Also if you don't want to buy a sodastream you can do what I do.I just buy the syrup and add a capful to a bottle of seltzer water.Tony __________ NOD32 5894 (20110221) Information __________This message was checked by NOD32 antivirus system.http://www.eset.com

Just blend the proportions indicated of fresh or thawed fruit and sugar until they're steaming (I don't remember the amounts offhand).
