Guest guest
Does anyone have a recipe for hand lotion or cream for extremely dry hands? My husband's hands are so dry in the winter they actually break open and bleed. It is agonizing. Any ideas on a lotion or cream to help? I have never attempted to make lotions (my thing is soap) so it would have to be something pretty simple, with easy to acquire ingredients. Thanks for your help! Guest guest
Hi Deb! This isn't a lotion, but try it, it works... 1/2 c mineral oil, 1/4 c anhydrous lanolin, 2 or 2.5 tbsp beeswax. Heat the mineral oil and lanolin til the lanolin is melted (I use a pyrex measuring cup in a pan of water), add the melted beeswax (or if you use 'granulated' beeswax, pour it in and stir til it melts), stir well, pour into containers. You can add some vitamin E if you like (contents of one or two gel-caps). Use two or three times a day. I made this using two tbsp of beeswax and the 'salve' is rather soft, though not runny. Next time I do it I'm going to use a little bit more beeswax. This stuff works well on dry heels too. Deb Deb, in my opinion he would be much better off using a solid lotion bar than a cream or lotion. I make mine with Shea Butter, Coco Butter, Castor Oil, Tocopherol (Vitamin E), and Beeswax. There are several recipes in the Toiletries Library and you can experiment until you get a consistency that you like. If his hands are breaking open, I don't think I would add a fragrance as it may be too irritating. Besides using it during the day, he may want to put a heavy dose on at night with a light pair of cotton gloves, for at least a few nights to a week. Pat. Guest guest
Fran, If you like the consistency and it is a receipe you will be using alot off, then consider packaging it in 8 oz jars instead of bottles with pumps. Jars are much easier to package lotions in. I would recommend double walled PET jars. lynn in valencia lavender bluffs bath and body " A little touch of heaven in your bath "

Guest guest
Hi Fran, Do you use stearic acid in your lotion? I found that if I cut back on the stearic a little ( it's what gives lotion it's body ), that it didn't set up quite as thick and was more pourable.
