So I've been reading Ph Miracle, and don't necessarily agree with everything in

their. The copywrite is 2002, so maybe there's a newer copy that deals with

things differently. Example, NO animal protein. But the reasons against that, in

the book, are the very reasons I am going for grass fed, etc. So the book

doesn't seem to deal with if you are eating grass fed animals and milk.

Anyhow, the book takes a stance against spirulina. Because it get's it's B12

from bird droppings. Let's just say, I left the spirulina out of my smoothie

today. Today I will be researching this issue - but was wondering if anyone on

this list has already " been there, done that " - and has anything at all to say

about it?

I researched it years ago, and to my recollection, it IS fertilized with

bat guano. Which is gross. HOWEVER....MOST fruits and veggies are grown in poop of some kind-manure is the most used product in gardening...which is why I grow my own stuff. I don't believe poo should be anywhere near my food. That said, manure is composted until all traces of it being actual dung is gone, but I am still not a fan of growing my veggies in it. I enrich my compost with veggie/seaweed based

"teas" that I make in my Vitamix. If you look at the soils for sale in a garden supply, you will see manure as a primary ingredient. Most of it comes from factory farms, and contains all the steroids, growth hormones, and other stuff fed to the animals that are farmed. Even some soil labeled as organic contains chicken manure, which is right up there with bat guano. I used spirulina when it first

became a craze back in the 70's, and I LOVED it. If memory serves, TRUE spirulina is an algae, but current farming practices make it more of a bacteria that is cultured in or near tilapia farms, which are factory farms for fish. These days, I prefer to get my nutrition from

whole foods, not something cultured on the runoff of something else. My info could be outdated, so you might want to continue to research it,

but I remember I was fond of it...so I must have given it up with good reason.

Thanks

I see mine comes from Hawaii. Ugh, decisions, decisions. I think I wanna be like you and just eat what I grow, mostly. Then you know ...

I'll take a look at the particular spirulina I have and where it comes from, and see if it makes me feel any better :)

If I decide I can't bear it, I'll feed it to my plants.

Good idea, Deb. Best to make an informed decision. Be wary of marketing labels though-if the label says "packaged in XXX", or "bottled in XXX" chances are VERY good that it wasn't actually GROWN in XXX, which means it could have come from China or some other country where "organic" means something altogether different. Also beware of terms like "organically GROWN", or organic BASED". Both terms are deceptive and misleading. A product can be GMO, but GROWN using organic practices, or can have organic BASED ingredients but contain other ingredients that are NOT organic. All designed to confuse and mislead. Feel free to send me any brands of stuff and I can likely help you determine if it is deceptive or accurately marketed.

Here's the label: Our farm, the only Spirulina farm in Hawaii, has been cultivating Spirulina continuously for over 25 years with Hawaiian deep sea water containing 94 trace minerals in a BioSecure zone free from pollution. Improve your health today with Spirulina Pacifica. Nutrex Hawaii Inc., Kailua-Kona, HI

The website is www.nutrex-hawaii.com

I sent them an email with the quote from the book, asking them what they can tell me that might ease my concerns. It will be interesting to hear from them and see what they have to say.

Thanks so much for responding - you are a blessing!

Hi Deb, I also have that book, and my take on all the info is that if you have a

very serious illnes: autoimmune, cancer, etc, then the recommendations might

make sense. I believe she also mentions the product CELL FOOD which I do use;

it has dissolved Oxygen, Trace Minerals, plant source amino acids and enzymes.

It is expensive, but I bought a 5-pack on ebay very inexpensively.

I personally feel like I'm starving if I don't eat meat, so the bottom line, eat

what makes you feel healthy, and of course, raw veggies, greens, etc. are really

good for you as you already know!!

I feel like I need meat too Joyce. Then I eat the veggies too and say HOLD THE SPUD.

I love potatoes in every shape and form from raw to mashed. But it doesn't like my

Blood sugars or weight. I ate 1/3 cup on Sunday but then say no the rest of the week.

We grew so many in our garden. My husband likes to be prepared in case of economy

Crashing or something we would have something to eat. In the event of starvation, I would

Eat them.
