Guest guest
That was the point of my post...to CREATE a recipe. I would say graham crackers, brown sugar, cinnamon and almond or nut milk would be a good starting point. Considering I can have NONE of these ingredients, it will be up to you guys to create it, lol. I was just tossing the idea out there. I could care less about Diet Coke but , brown sugar and cinnamon Pop Tarts. Now we are talking about something important and I cannot do without( I have been doing with since the first of the year because of a Biggest loser contest) and I get to have them again starting Wednesday. Guest guest
"In my humble opinion." Re: OT - FYI Canola Oil ok, now I am bummed, so what kind of oil is better. not good but better to use if one must use it. In smaller volumes I use olive oil but I do have a weakness for the odd deep fried fries in the deep fryer and I buy canola oil for the deep fryer because I naively believed it was better than other oils! I am wrong again! What would be better to use in the deep fryer and yes I know it would be better not to use the deep fryer at all but if I do what would be better? Guest guest
When I was FORCED to give up soda years back, I thought I was going to go nuts (food allergies forced the issue). I learned to make my own yummy soda with a soda siphon. My wonderful daughter has since bought me a soda stream home soda maker. VERY cool to be able to make your own soda from plain water. My favorite is fresh ginger and a touch of agave nectar. Guest guest
One of the many great things about the Vitamix, is that you can create "smoothie" versions of most of your favorite unhealthy treats, so you can have the basic taste, without so much of the bad stuff. For your potato fix, for example, you could have a much lighter version of them as a soup. My "cream" of cauliflower soup has absolutely no cream in it whatsoever, and it is as rich and fabulous as any I have ever had. A "brownie" smoothie is a no brainer in the VM-just a tasty, no bad stuff. Pretty much any recipe, sweet or savory can be adapted to be healthier, but still taste yummy! My pumpkin pie ice cream couldn't possibly BE any healthier, and is is delish! From: K <kamako@...>Subject: Re: Re: OT - FYI Canola Oil Date: Tuesday, March 8, 2011, 1:11 AM Isn't funny what foods toot our horn or whatever you might say. My grandson who lives with me has Asperger's and is a very picky eater who wants fries with every meal. I usually just oven fry (bake) them with a little olive oil rubbed on them. Guest guest
Peanut oil is excellent for deep-frying; if you decide to use it, make sure it's refined otherwise the smoke point is considerably lower. Guest guest
Yes, peanut oil. canola has the same high smoke point but I think the taste is odd. I use oil many times, starting with mild tasting items and usually use it the final time for fish. Guest guest
I've been on the run the last couple of days... back to catch up now. :)You know, it's funny - I have been noticing some gradual changes. One thing that I find interesting is that I seem to crave fresh ginger a lot. I can't make a smoothie anymore without tossing a chunk of ginger in it. I'm thinking that must be my body speaking to me in some way or another, lol. Also funny that you should mention Child and her failures in the kitchen (I absolutely loved watching her cooking shows with my mom when I was a kid) - and with that I must admit that I have a Vitamix failure that I haven't yet overcome. I made a soup (it was my second soup attempt - first one turned out okay) - a zucchini soup that I added a little avocado to for some creaminess... it was the most gawdawful tasting concoction I have ever tasted! Revolting!! Total YUCKNESS!! Haven't been able to bring myself to try another soup since. Guess I need to get back on the horse, huh?FrannyOn Mar 7, 2011, at 3:31 PM, wrote: BELIEVE me, I'm not offended! And as your diet changes, you're going to find that the mantra Vitamix has been chanting of late is true--you really do start craving better quality food once your body is introduced to it (I do wish I knew, though, why the flu signals my body to want nothing but ice-cold Coke--SO healthful). You'll see--even potatoes that have been peeled won't taste as good anymore and there's nothing more satisfying and comforting than a serving of short-grain brown rice (and that's where the ceramic liner for the pressure cooker comes in handy--the rice is restaurant-perfect). You're right, I'm lucky that I often prefer whole to processed foods but you're almost certainly going to find that it will happen to you, too, especially if what you prepare tastes good (otherwise, why bother?). And if this transition doesn't occur quickly enough to suit you, don't sweat it--little steps for little feet. Just keep getting to know your Vitamix and thinking how standard recipes can be made in the Vitamix. With experience and a little imagination, you'll soon be making substitutions and/or additions of ingredients of better quality--just use a little common sense and rely on your familiarity with what tastes good to you. And don't be afraid to screw up--observe Child's response when asked if she ever had things turn out badly: . If she could take her failures in stride, so can we! I learned to make my own yummy soda with a soda siphon. My wonderful daughter has since bought me a soda stream home soda maker. VERY cool to be able to make your own soda from plain water. My favorite is fresh ginger and a touch of agave nectar. SOOOO many flavor options. From: ocarolyn1@... <ocarolyn1@...>Subject: Re: Re: OT - FYI Canola Oil Date: Monday, March 7, 2011, 8:59 PM I do get the diet coke craving once in a while too! Guest guest
Yessssss...!! I need to come up with a pop tart brown sugar/cinnamon smoothie concoction! I'm on it!! :)FrannyOn Mar 7, 2011, at 5:41 PM, Berry wrote: My mind immediately went to a brown sugar/cinnamon smoothie. I am thinking some graham crackers, the other obvious ingredients, and a little rice milk. Might make a rather delish ice cream or popsicle too. Guest guest
I like that you can make a ginger soda nice and STRONG-where it burns your sinuses, lol. A squeeze of fresh lime juice just makes it all the better. So many choices with homemade! Guest guest
AbsoLUTEly, Frannie! How bad could it be compared to beef tartare with melted cheese? Look, you're going to end up making SO many delicious--not to mention healthful--things in your Vitamix that you're going to end up laughing at this (if you don't die of ptomaine first...JUST kidding!) YES--get back on that beast! And don't be afraid to bring your own sense of taste to what you're preparing--if you're pretty sure that some ingredients you like will blend well, go for it. Your instincts are probably to be trusted and the more comfortable you get with this, the higher your success rate will be (it will, in fact, probably snowball). Re: OT - FYI Canola Oil ok, now I am bummed, so what kind of oil is better. not good but better to use if one must use it. I was actually afraid to admit on here that I even had a deep fryer but now I have to because I want to know what oil would be better for it then. Carolyn In a message dated 3/7/2011 9:25:32 A.M. Guest guest
Lime is DEFINITELY the way to go with ginger.
