I recently bought rice bran oil, mainly for seasoning some new pans, and I think it's wonderful! It has a really high smoke point, isn't very expensive, and tastes nice: http://www.amazon.com/dp/B0009PAVQY/ref=pe_82360_19042360_pe_vfe_d1 . Tophé also has a smaller size, too; some users buy the small bottle first and then refill from the half-gallon. I found a brand in Chinatown that's imported from Thailand and is pressed from jasmine rice (woo hoo!); Roland has some that's Italian but it's pretty expensive.

Here's some info on rice bran oil in general. It's nice that it seems to be a healthful oil but honestly, what sold me was the high smoke point, the price, and now, the flavor. It's supposed to be especially good for deep frying because the high smoke point allows you to fry quickly without much oil absorption. Also, when oil's hot to begin with, the temperature isn't lowered as much when food is introduced for frying.

Re: OT - FYI Canola Oil

ok, now I am bummed, so what kind of oil is better. not good but better to use if one must use it. In smaller volumes I use olive oil but I do have a weakness for the odd deep fried fries in the deep fryer and I buy canola oil for the deep fryer because I naively believed it was better than other oils! I am wrong again!

What would be better to use in the deep fryer and yes I know it would be better not to use the deep fryer at all but if I do what would be better? I was actually afraid to admit on here that I even had a deep fryer but now I have to because I want to know what oil would be better for it then.

Carolyn, just curious as to why you would be afraid to admit you have a deep fryer? I know we often talk about "healthy", but certainly no one here will judge anyone else for what they eat. Someone else mentioned that a while back-that they were afraid to admit they ate XXX. I wanted to apologize if it came off as though anyone would chastise anyone else for the food choices they make-certainly never the intention. From: <kareningotham@...>Subject: Re: OT - FYI Canola Oil Date: Monday, March 7, 2011, 1:25 PM

I agree. I think everyone here is on their own journey toward a healthier lifestyle... Which in my opinion lies within a very broad spectrum. For example, I have been developing a MUCH healthier approach to eating over the last few months... however, I still have my areas of weakness (eg, diet coke - which I KNOW is poison, and brown sugar and cinnamon Pop Tarts - which I have to put blinders on and RUN past in the grocery store to avoid tossing in my cart.) If I could find acceptable substitutes for both of these vices, I would be much better off. But I haven't yet, and there are other things like those that I'm still working on. It's a process. And ya know what? Sometimes we need to indulge in certain things so as not to deprive ourselves (though I DO want to kick this diet coke habit). So who cares if you enjoy fried foods once in a while? :)FrannySent from my iPhoneOn Mar 7, 2011, at 1:14 PM, Berry <berrywell@...> wrote:

I was not afraid to admit because of the group just feel guilty period for eating it. Like admitting a habit. I have many others though, not alcohol though, although I like the odd drink and bailey's in my capaccino I cannot have too much because of the heartburn. So as much as sometimes I would like to drown my sorrows, LOL I can't because I am old and get heartburn, LOL! My other habit would be fudge and jelly bellies! I have a hard time walking by the large jumbo bag of jelly bellies at Costco and not buying them and if I do break down and buy them (it is best I just do not walk down that whole isle) then I tend to consume the entire bag in just a few days and then wow talk about heartburn! Oh and fudge. I must admit I make the best maple fudge and do so once in awhile as a treat for my kids when they come, then they go home and I eat the rest! Best just not to make it!

The deep fryer is really just to make those home made fries once in awhile that the kids always want me to buy for them at the hockey rink and I am too cheap to buy them there. (of course I like them too). I do make the real potato fries (not processed frozen ones). I left my deep fryer behind at their dad's and the kids said that they hate eating the fries from it because their dad never changes the oil in it and it is disgusting. I wanted then to give them a treat and of course was in Costco and it was on clearance, so I bought one so at least they could have somewhat healthy ones, not in rancid oil at my house. But now I find out the large jug of Costco Canola oil I bought is not so good either. What is better besides olive oil because that is too expensive for the deep fryer? I do use it though for everything else.

Don't include me in "everyone." I don't eat meat because I stopped being able to digest it and developed my own feelings about it (and which I don't inflict on others) based on the way we're designed but beyond that, it's all about the way things taste for me. I adapt recipes to dovetail with my own dietary limitations and if it's both healthful and delicious, so much the better. But truly, I'm not on a journey to a more healthful lifestyle--it's more about the food for me and as often as not, whole foods taste better to me than highly refined ones.

Well I really bought my first vitamix at first because I liked how it made dacquiris, mudslides, etc. :) LOL! sort of kidding! I actually make non alcoholic dacquiris for the kids and their friends too.

I also was making smoothies in a blender and then a bullet and they just kept breaking so the vitamix impressed me that it would stand up and would mix it as a "smoothie" as apposed to a "chunkie" and I was trying to diet! I did lose weight doing the "slim-n-six" workout but then I gained it all back and more and now trying to do that again. I eat when I am happy, sad, stressed, not stressed, etc. Wow and do I ever get cravings and it is not for fruit or veggies, but jelly bellies, fudge, chocolate, you get the idea. I am physically active though thankfully to help burn some of it but I would like to stay physically active and I am short (use to be 5'2" but think I have shrunk since I have fallen arches too and am likely more like 5' or maybe 5'1" if I am lucky (stubs for legs). Oh I tried the Wii fit but it was offensive, it told me I was obese (I think something like that). So the heavier I am the more I notice the pain in my knee. At one point I could not walk without limping badly but I still rode the horse but had to take naproxin daily to do that. Now I am not limping but knee still hurts and I was able to go down hill skiing once so far this year but I took naproxin the day before, day of and couple days after to do that. I love down hill skiing but in order to do it on anything bigger than a mole hill here I have to drive 3 hours. My girls use to ski race but their dad will not let them do that anymore. want to lose weight to make myself feel better about "me" because my x put me down a lot and called me a lot of not nice names. I would like to think of myself as having a sturdy build! Maybe like the halflinger pony I use to have, "Puddums"; she was short and thick!

Sorry but I have gone on too much again, a bit of mental therapy, sorry,

I envy you in that I apparently don't hear my body sending messages of cravings for whole foods. Sadly, the cravings I have are for highly processed, ultra sweet foods. I hope that at some point that will change.

I am okay with any and all advise I can get but I listen to it all and take it all in and in the end I make up my own mind anyways, I use what I can and what suits my lifestyle. I do want to eat healthier but in no way will I never have bad things, usually I end up going off of the diet mostly when my kids come because I like to treat them and then I eat it too. I also have a pretty good sense of humor as I have to or I would be in the psychiatry ward! LOL! curious what lMHO means?

I do get the diet coke craving once in a while too! But you know I got it today and broke down and had one and I did not like it, could have been because I already had a bit of heart burn before I did and then it made it worse or maybe it is a sign that I am craving better things for me.

Over the years I've become convinced that the best oils to use for my

BELIEVE me, I'm not offended! And as your diet changes, you're going to find that the mantra Vitamix has been chanting of late is true--you really do start craving better quality food once your body is introduced to it (I do wish I knew, though, why the flu signals my body to want nothing but ice-cold Coke--SO healthful). You'll see--even potatoes that have been peeled won't taste as good anymore and there's nothing more satisfying and comforting than a serving of short-grain brown rice (and that's where the ceramic liner for the pressure cooker comes in handy--the rice is restaurant-perfect). You're right, I'm lucky that I often prefer whole to processed foods but you're almost certainly going to find that it will happen to you, too, especially if what you prepare tastes good (otherwise, why bother?). And if this transition doesn't occur quickly enough to suit you, don't sweat it--little steps for little feet. :) Just keep getting to know your Vitamix and thinking how standard recipes can be made in the Vitamix. With experience and a little imagination, you'll soon be making substitutions and/or additions of ingredients of better quality--just use a little common sense and rely on your familiarity with what tastes good to you. And don't be afraid to screw up--observe Child's response when asked if she ever had things turn out badly:

. :) If she could take her failures in stride, so can we!

What would be better to use in the deep fryer and yes I know it would be better not to use the deep fryer at all but if I do what would be better? I was actually afraid to admit on here that I even had a deep fryer but now I have to because I want to know what oil would be better for it then.

Here is an interesting article about canola oil and its side effects:

I really didn't know this and have been using canola oil from time to time.

, I meant to ask you-is the ceramic liner you are referring to the same rice pot thingy we have talked about before? Or are you holding out nifty gadgets on me..._,___

No, no--same thing (when have I EVER held out on you?!). I LOVE it. It makes perfect rice--just equal parts water and rice (maybe a teensy bit more water if you're so inclined), bring to pressure, cook for 50 minutes, let pressure come down. Cooking time is reduced to 30 minutes if you presoak your rice overnight. You can also make layered meals consisting of pulses and grains--the liner goes from the pressure cooker straight to the table.

u do have a lot of gadgets and I thought I did. I don't have one of those and no pressure cooker either. I am a bit afraid of them. I remember when I was a kid my mom used one all of the time and I remember it blowing up once, what a mess!

When I was FORCED to give up soda years back, I thought I was going to go nuts (food allergies forced the issue). I learned to make my own yummy soda with a soda siphon. My wonderful daughter has since bought me a soda stream home soda maker. VERY cool to be able to make your own soda from plain water. My favorite is fresh ginger and a touch of agave nectar. SOOOO many flavor options.

I do get the diet coke craving once in a while too! But you know I got it today and broke down and had one and I did not like it, could have been because I already had a bit of heart burn before I did and then it made it worse or maybe it is a sign that I am craving better things for me.

Whew, I thought you were holding out. I use glass or milk glass vessels in my steamers, but I have one of those pots on my radar. I saw a nifty looking one not too long ago, but it didn't say what it was made of, and certainly looked like it could contain lead. I doubt the Ohsawa ones contain lead but you could always contact Gold Mine to ask. The new ones are a lot nice than my old one--lots easier to handle.

I REALLY like mine and would rather use it than a rice cooker. The results are perfect and depending on the size, you can prepare a huge amount of rice if need be.

My mind immediately went to a brown sugar/cinnamon smoothie. I am thinking some graham crackers, the other obvious ingredients, and a little rice milk. Might make a rather delish ice cream or popsicle too. HmmmmmmmFrom: <kareningotham@...>Subject: Re: Re: OT - FYI Canola Oil Date: Monday, March 7, 2011, 6:01 PM
