Guest guest
They told us that Zack would have to stay four hours after he woke up. Well, he came into his room awake, grabbed a Pepsi out of my hand and began drinking it. Then, he got up, walked two floors to the gift shop, to buy his own present. They finally sent us home after only two hours because he wouldn't stay in bed. His recovery was shorter than the time we waited for surgery. I am trying to remember, but I think he had to stay out of school for a week. As soon as he got home from the hospital, he ordered scrambled eggs and toast. The next morning, he got up and got himself some chips! Surgery didn't slow him down a bit! Sue -- mom to Zack, 13, DS, 2 ASD's, an VSD and a bad mitral valve; Matt, 12. Guest guest
Some kids bounce right back. With (age 4 at the time), it took a week. Her biggest hurdle was that she didn't want to drink anything. They wouldn't let us leave the hospital until she got SOMETHING in her. They tried popsicles and all kinds of stuff but she wouldn't even try. About the time the hospital wanted to try a Tylenol suppository, I volunteered to force the liquid version in her. About 1/2 hour later she perked up and was willing to drink. Once we got home I didn't force enough liquids in her and after about 3 days she got very phlegmy. She lloked and sounded awful. It took another 2 days to get over the " hump " and well on the way to recovery. On the other hand, when I had mine out (at age 6) I came home and ate hot dogs. - Becky In a message dated 4/26/2006 6:26:14 PM Eastern Standard Time, kldoll@... writes: Hi. Guest guest
wasn't the model recovery patient. Surgery was very early in the am, and we sat in recovery all day, watching kid after kid come out, wake up, have a drink, go to the bathroom, then go home. We had a sad lump of a girl who wouldn't eat or drink anything, and believe me, by 7 pm, they had offered everything possible. After a brief " scene " by one very tired mother :-), was admitted for the night (I had this pre-arranged and pre-approved, but the hospital was apparently full so they just wanted to move us to the " regular " recovery room to wait longer until she drank!) She still had the IV in, and I noted that during the night, she soaked through diapers she was peeing so much. So, in the am, when they rounded, I asked for them to stop the IV (maybe she wasn't thirsty, they were pumping so much in?), stop the tylenol with codine (makes me sick.... wondered if her tummy was upset and she couldn't tell us?) and give her a Tylenol suppository, and we'd keep trying fluids. Again, the buffet of choices arrived in her room, and she'd take it to her mouth, then not drink. got the ped's wagon and took her for a ride around the hospital, then outside to the courtyard where I conveniently left my smoothie within her reach as I read the paper. She took a couple sips, and seemed to be in no pain. Went back to the room, she again refused everything. DH had arrived by that time with videos, and I took a break. He called down to the lounge after about an hour, and she had been so distracted by the " making a mess " scene in " The Parent Trap " that she grabbed the soda on her tray and drank some. He stood at the TV and rewound that scene about 10 times, watching her drink each time. Back into the wagon to the Mcs (why do they have this in a Children's Hospital?) and ordered her her favorite fries. She ate about half a bag of fries (I could barely watch) and drank some Coke. (Docs said that whatever she wanted to eat and/or drink was fine, so give her what she wanted). We went back up, reported to the nurses so they could chart, and we were finally discharged that afternoon. We got home and she asked for taquitos, which I made and then made my DH sit with her while she ate........ couldn't watch. She was fine with them, and the rest of her recovery was uneventful. I think the procedure was on a Thursday, and she went back to school Tuesday. Every kid is different........ bet if you ask for a week off, he'll be out in 4 hours, and if you ask for a couple days, you'll have a longer stay....... Guest guest
Nic was kept overnight because that was standard procedure for kids with DS. The Dr said he could leave the next morning providing he ate and drank something. Well the first thing he grabbed for was the pretzels we had been snacking on after he fell asleep. They said things would get worse before they got better and they did-slightly. Tylenol was enough to ease any pain he had. They WORSE part was his BAD BREATH! The odor was really coming from the throat and it was bad! LOL You also have to be careful not to knock off any scabs before they are ready to come off, otherwise bleeding can occur and sometimes require a re-hospitalization.
