Guest guest
I used to take Dean with me on shows and jokingly told everyone that he was "store schooled" (he helped me set up and tear down for the show, and for each day, and he did his schoolwork in my booth during the day UNTIL I discovered that he was just filling in the blanks and not really completing the workbooks. I didn't have time at the end of the night (too exhausted) to review his work and make him do the corrections so it ended up more of a hassle having him along than a help. HOWEVER, during those times I DID have him pick grapes and peel 15 lbs of carrots (the second most odious task) among other things. He is an awesome helper (better than his older brother!) but not where schoolwork is concerned. He has dyslexia and ADD and asking him to work independently was just too much. Hmmmm, I'm thinking... he's been asking to go on shows again (wants the $$$) Perhaps I should work out a deal with him. He gets paid $20 a day (slave labor I know, but THAT is what kids are for ;-) Perhaps I will find the time/energy to review his books at the end of each day and deduct $$$ for sloppy work! I do enjoy his help and company at the shows... Guest guest
For what it's worth, Lea Ann, I home schooled my daughter through 6th grade, and found that she did FAR better when I let her use daily skills as her "lessons" rather than work books. The silly things she was learning in the workbooks weren't nearly as important as learning "real life" skills. I owned three businesses at that time (book store, Bingo parlor and antique store, all side by side in a strip mall) , and she was able to man any one of them, from stocking shelves, to waiting on customers, making change, etc. Customers LOVED being waited on by a knowledgeable 6 year old, and she learned some valuable skills) Sounds like your little fella could benefit from lessons in marketing, public relations, budget management, etc-INSTEAD of having to do a workbook? In other words, his day with you, doing those tasks IS his shool work for the day, and he gets a grade for it. He learns something and earns some money, you get the benefit of his warm company and help, and he is actually learning something about real life instead of a blank in a book. The bookwork can always be made up on days you aren't at shows. Worked a charm with my daughter, and when she did start attending main stream school, she was ahead of her peers in terms of having some life skills under her belt along with the book stuff. Who knows-you might have a future male Vitamix rep in training, something he can put to use at an early age! Sure would be good bonding for both of you-WAY better than a gold star in a flimsy book! I am busy plucking grapes but curious if I have to go back and get little nubs off or will the vitamix take care of them?
Guest guest
Why do you peel the carrots instead of just give them a good scrubbing? > ? Guest guest
Sometimes there are deep ridges and the carrots really look knarly if they aren't peeled. Guest guest
I would so do that if I were home schooling him, but he is at a private school and when I took him out to go on the road with me the agreement was that he would get credit for attendance if he did his work. I "might" home school him some day, but my health isn't up to it yet... Guest guest
Shoot! He's lucky to be living in a country where child labor laws dictate the use of a Star peeler! He ought to be glad he's not living in a country where only Oxos are available!
