I am loving the sweetness that I get from adding a date or two (usually just one though) to smoothies, ice creams, etc made with fruits that are a little on the sour side. For you who are more experienced, what is your favorite sweetener?

Davinna, this is good information! But,

can you taste the date(s) in the smoothie? I’m not fond of dates, but I

like a natural sweetener.

that is what I like about using dates.  I cannot taste them in the smoothies.  If you are worried about getting a small chunk of date, try putting the liquid and the date in your VM first and getting the date pulverized before adding the rest of your fruits/veggies to it.  It works great!

I don't add any sweetener. Just the fruit.

If I make vanilla ice cream, I have used sugar for the family and then I make a fruit one for me with no added sugar. A banana makes it pretty sweet.

Davinna – sorry, I meant to ask in

Or you could just use date sugar; it blends better (although I've read that Bob's Red Mill is a must to avoid).

Just curious what about using prunes instead of dates? Just maybe 2 because it might be to much fiber.

Prunes can be used for a sweetner too, there is actually a prune butter sweetner sold in giant eagle I think.

I also like using 1 or 2 dried organic dates. But my new favorite is becoming

Coconut Secret Raw organic crystals. The are low glycemic, have minerals,

vitamins and amino acids naturally. I got it at Whole Foods.

I am a raw agave nectar and raw honey fan. I only like stevia if it is homegrown-I find the commercial stuff to have a bitter aftertaste. Fresh from the herb it's okay, but not my favorite. I used to have a WICKED sweet tooth, but these days, I find a sweet potato to be a treat, as I just don't crave sweets like I used to. All agave needs to be heated to arrest fermentation (olé!) but I think the temperature is low enough to satisfy the raw folk.

I found dried dates at the health food store but have now found pitted ones.

Much better. Never used dates before my VM.

Dates have a plain sweetness while prunes have a tart-ish flavor to them. I have no problem using prunes where that flavor would blend in, but dates are like a neutral sweetener. If you must use a sweetener I like dates because they come with fiber :-) I've weaned myself off of dates though and now only use Stevia. I have a page on sweeteners on my website.

, why do you say avoid Bobs Red Mill? I've purchased that brand

in the past for other things so now I must know.

Just for date sugar (I've tried other of their products that I like just fine). A number of purchasers reviewed it on Amazon and all mentioned that was clumpy and hard as a rock and that it didn't blend. Date sugar isn't supposed to be like that. It doesn't melt the way sugar does (it's ground, dehydrated dates) but it's great for smoothies and such because it's VERY dry and powdery and as Lea Ann mentioned, it's pretty neutral in flavor. I just prefer it to dates because I like the way it blends, it doesn't have pits, and I don't like the texture of dates. I've bought a number of different brands over the years and they've all been pretty much the same--not in the least hard/clumpy. So I'll check stores until I find something other than Bob's.

according to the man i buy dates from at the farmers market, buying dates with

the pits in them retains more of their health components. prepitted they've lost

some nutrition but are still good for sweetening.

i was buying " date paste " which was basicly chopped dates which is ok for using

right away. however, he has been " educating " me re the use of dates and i'm now

buying dates with the pits in. i don't find it that hard to get the pit out.

the wide variety of dates is also interesting.
