Trying to figure out preservatives and emulsifiers....... So, I finally bit the bullet and ordered from Angie. I am going to start with the recipes she has on her site and learn some before experimenting much further. (by the way, thanks Angie for all the help!) Ann Marie at Brambleberry and Angie both gave me very helpful information on preservatives for my sugar scrubs, so I am now going to start putting preservatives in them. They have become very popular and I don't want any problems down the line. Thanks to this list I have learned that vit E is not sufficient and is not a preservative. Scary, I can't tell you how many books I have bought listed it as a preservative! Guest guest
Hi Vicky, I have tried the lecithin as an emulsifier, and it made a great, moisturizing hand and body lotion.( got the recipe from the library here on this list). Unfortunately, it made my skin kind of " musty " smelling and I couldn't handle that! I made the recipe without the lecithin and it separated the next day. Wasn't good at all. I am a newbie and haven't tried the emulsifying wax yet, but plan to put in an order as soon as I can get some space on the old credit card! I haven't tried the beeswax and borax thing yet, but have come across a lot of recipes using it, so I guess it must work? Hope that helps. Leanna in Alberta. Guest guest
Hi Vicky; Beeswax and borax are only a temporary emulsifyer. After a matter of time the liquid will separate from the oils. I had to toss out two bottles of peppermint foot lotion that only called for the beeswax and borax. In about a month they were separated with tiny little pieces of beeswax cloging up the pump.I tried to remelt but when cooled again the separation. The first bottle that I used was just fine no separation but after a few weeks the other two did separate. The emulsifying wax is the only way to go unless you use up the lotion within a month and just make up very small portions at a time. I get my emulsifying wax from Olive Tree Soaps. Everyone on the list has their favorite supplier. Blessings; Raven

As we had discussed, you can make a thin emulsion to use as a leave-on spray conditioner. To keep the thin emulsion from separating, other solubilizers/emulsifiers would need to be added-----or as we were saying, you can just shake it up when you use it----which should work fine for your doggies (and that's the way I use it for myself sometimes). While you are making it, you may want to make the basic hair conditioner to try for yourself and your daughter. It is great for all hair types, but especially for curly hair. Let me know if you have any questions. Good luck and have fun! Guest guest
Hi Rita I found your information interesting. I have gone to using cyclomethicone to make body sprays and such. There is no shaking and no worries about what fo you are using. I have not found one that will not work. It works great with eo's as well. No alcohol needed and it will not stain. I have a friend doing a fast buy on it and at 30 a gal it makes the cost reasonable. Chris

FCO is great stuff. Liquid to very low temperatures, odorless, not prone to rancidity, usable in atomizers and roll-ons, etc. The other oil I think has great prospects for use in natural perfumery is sulfonated castor oil (Turkey Red oil). This oil dissolves in water! It's great for use in diffusable/soluble scented bath oil. It's also a cleanser. You can make a non-sudsing shampoo from it (great baby shampoo), which can also be used as a general liquid soap. Liberty Natural has good prices on it. Used as a bath oil, it cleans and tones the skin. I'm waiting to find organic sulfonated castor oil.

I know you can get soy lecithin at health food stores but I'm not sure if it can be used in your particular application. I think some people use Polysorbate 80 as an emulsifier in perfumes, which comes from sorbitol, which comes from fruits. I don't know if our other NP'ers consider it to be " natural " enough for a " natural perfume " . Has anyone else used this? Of course, if you stick to 190 proof alcohol and don't add additional water, you won't need an emulsifier.
