Check out costco or tupperware for cups that do not leak. Costco often carries different thermos and cups that are a fraction of the cost anywhere else. I have used a Tupperware cup with a lid on it and put it in the fridge at work. If no fridge then I have used a thermos bought from costco and they were great quality.

I am trying to use avocado because I want the "good" fat it has. I have made 2 smoothies (each using the 1/2 of the same avocado. both smoothies have been very bitter. This morning I had 1 cup green grapes, 1 cup frozen blueberries, 1/4 cup frozen dark cherries 2 handfuls of spinach 1 kale leaf and 1/2 avocado (and the pit). I added ice, and then later some orange juice as it was too thick at first. I tasted it and then added some agave nectar, but it was still on the bitter side. It was drinkable.

I am in love with my smoothies ...

I've come to like this one; 1 whole naval orange, 1 banana, about 2 oz. spinich, 1 T. hemp hearts, 1/2 to a whole dropper full of stevia, about 1 cup of water, 4 to 6 ice cubes, maybe a T. of coconut oil, or maybe 1/2 avacado.

Keep experimenting :) I know I will. Oh, and did I ever yesterday. I found out I do NOT LIKE arugula in my smoothies!!

Avacado pit is bitter. Also if you used to Hate fresh fruits and greens, try reducing the amount of of greens at first until your taste buds get acclimated - Kim in Oregon can tell you that she had to start with only one or two leaves of spinach I think, but over time has built up to consuming (and enjoying) full-blown Green Smoothies!Have you seen the Green Smoothie recipe on my website? It is designed to taste ESPECIALLY sweet and help people get started with Green Smoothies...

Have you put kale in all of your smoothies with avocado? If so, you might try

them with JUST the avocado. Kale is very bitter so that might be what you're

tasting.

Hmm, I have had other smoothies with more greens. It was only bitter when I added avocado. One time was with the pit and one time without, although the one with the pit was more bitter. I noticed the ones with apples are more sweet. I will keep experimenting. I have looked at your recipe… I will give it a try although I have been giving up sugar so too many fruits make it too sweet. I expect it's the avocado pit... but I don't really know. Never tasted

one.

Kale is a bit bitter, but your not using very much.

Usually an all greens smoothie will be bitter... you have to watch

your proportions.

How about making hot soups on the vitamix to take to work? They reheat well. My daughter takes some to school in a thermos and no need to reheat. do you have to soak the beans and then cook them before you puree them?

I am going to make a bean puree soup, it won't be 100% done in the vita mix though.I also want to do a tomato soup using whole tomatoes, but I am still looking for a good recipe.

Oh yea - I wanted to ask about the Kale - did you include the stem - it is the most bitter (and very fibrous) part...

I did a tomato soup the other day in my blender, but I'm still

saving for a vitamix (and just learning here in the meantime) so I

can't tell you about the heating etc, just about a blender tomato

soup.

I just made it up as I went, based on what we had around. I put in

whole tomatoes, a clove of garlic, a handful of fresh basil leaves

and some spring onions (herbs both from our garden). I'm trying to

think if I put in anything else. I think I also put in a dollop of

tomato paste (I can't remember the US equivalent - it is the

concentrated completely smooth paste from 100% tomatoes) because the

tomatoes weren't organic/homegrown, so I figured they'd need a bit

of extra flavour. I can imagine I might have put in a date and

perhaps something a bit salty. I would have just added water as

needed. It would be nice made with stock, but I didn't have any on

hand.

It was nice, but I actually served it cold as it is summer here and

we've just finished a heatwave. It tasted a bit like the chopped

tomato mix I put on bruschetta, but of course, smoother. I would

make it again even before I get a vitamix! I imagine that using the

vitamix would make it more soup like because it would be even

smoother and of course, warm. With a vitamix I'd be tempted to use

a small red onion and perhaps some celery. You could actually even

throw in a carrot - I often add them to pasta sauces and the kids

don't notice as long as the sauce is smooth.

And sorry for just butting into the conversation. I just joined the

group and haven't done an intro. I don't have a vitamix but am

saving for one, so thought I'd learn a bit more about them first.

I'm was a home economist and a caterer years ago, am vegetarian, 99%

vegan and aim for super healthy food. And I do write lots of

recipes (have taught cooking and written a couple of cookbooks just

for classes, etc) so hopefully I'll be able to help with some recipe

ideas for other people too.

The Green Ice Cream? No - those were "picked" frozen grapes...Good that you took the stem off - Kale stems are best sent to the compost pile (IMO)

Nice to see you, Fiona! We have other members from Oz here so you should feel right at home. And don't feel weird about being here and not yet having a Vitamix--I joined the Norwalk juicer support group a few years before I had enough to buy my own. Your amassed knowledge will just burst forth when you get your Vitamix. :)

I'd love to hear if you find a good bean puree soup recipe.  Lea Ann posted a recipe for tomato soup recently.  It was super easy and I just found the post with it, so here is what she said in quotes below:

" I've made cream of tomato soup with tomatoes, a small cube of sharp cheddar cheese, a veggie bullion cube, a small lemon wedge and 4-5 dates (cream of tomato soup from 's is really sweet).  If you add some zucchini it adds creaminess.  Add some sun dried tomatoes and it gets thicker and has a really nice, bumped up tomato flavor... "

Here is another recipe Lea Ann shared for Tomato Basil Soup, and what Fiona did sounds yummy too!

Hi Fiona,Waving hi from Sydney :-) Welcome to the group, it's great to have another Aussie here. This group is a fantastic resource of amazing info, and not all of it related to the Vitamix! Your tomato soup sounds interesting! I am also a vegetarian (newbie since the beginning of the year), I eat pretty healthily although there is still loads of room for improvement. I would like to increase the raw component of my diet, and the VM is great for that, but for now I am just enjoying discovering meat-free cooking. I ordered my VM through Everten Online at http://www.everten.com.au/category/Vitamix-Total-Nutrition-Center.html/ (I wish we could get them through Lea Ann here in Australia!) and got the free dry container with it.

Hope you get yours soon!

My grandmother had a great bean soup recipe, unfortunately no one in my family writes things down as they cook. I can’t complain either because I am the same way. I once asked my grandmother how much of an ingredient to use, and her response was “enough”. I usually only use a recipe out of the book once, and then I add things to suit my tastes. I often get asked why I don't write a cookbook for my gluten free goodies. The simple truth is I have no idea how I make what I do-I just chuck stuff in until it is "right". When asked for a recipe, it is actually difficult for me to define one, since I never measure ANYTHING, lol.I am going to make a bean puree soup, it won't be 100% done in the vita mix though.I also want to do a tomato soup using whole tomatoes, but I am still looking for a good recipe.>> How about making hot soups on the vitamix to take to work? When you ask about a bean puree soup, do you mean one that is pretty

much just beans? Or can it have half veggies in it?

This isn't a vitamix recipe, just one that I do on the stove, but it

could easily be adapted. I very often make soups with beans in

them. For myself, I'd leave the ingredients unblended (although I'd

mash a bit to make the soup all thick but leave chunks), but for my

kids, I blend them until smooth.

I start by frying an onion on very low heat (and you could use water

or stock for frying if you are avoiding oil), then add cumin,

coriander, cardamom, turmeric and a little pepper. Also add a clove

or two of garlic, crushed. If I'm trying to keep my soup close to

white, I'll leave out the turmeric and pepper, but in a coloured

soup I'll put it in for the anti cancer properties.

Then I add a cauliflower or two, or chopped pumpkin, or chopped

zucchinis - depending on what sort of soup I'm making. (If I do

pumpkin, I use a butternut and usually roast it in the oven first

just whole so that it is easy to cut, then you can just scoop it out

of the skin and drop it straight into the pot). If I want to pad it

out a bit I might add potatoes.

Then I put in some sort of legume. So here is where I would put in

a heap of lentils (matching colour to the veg) or beans. If using

beans, I would want them to be precooked or else I'd use black eye

peas or adzuki beans so they are quick. Cover in stock and cook it

all up.

Then for a smooth soup, puree it.

To give an idea of quantities, I'd put in equivalent to one whole

cauli, 2 or 3 potatoes and a cup or so of dried lentils. Watch the

water/stock incase you need to top it up. You could leave out the

potatoes (and get a little less soup).

My kids top it with grated cheese. I have it plain. You could add

whatever you like - sour cream, cream, etc. I don't have dairy.

Now ... when I get my vitamix, I'll try something similar using raw

veg and precooked legumes. I'll be trying a quantity just for

myself first incase it needs adjusting. Hoping it will be good

though, as two of my kids aren't good at eating vegetables, but they

are pretty good at eating "smooth soup", so hoping to be making a

few vitamix smooth soups this winter coming up.

i made a bean puree soup last week. but no recipe, i'm afraid.

i used cranberry beans. garlic. the green section just above the white of

several leeks and finely chopped them. the garlic had been frozen with the

skins off. i sauted the garlic and green leeks a bit in olive oil. then i

added some cranberry beans i grew and froze last summer. to this i added

chicken broth and let them cook until the beans were soft. then i vitamixed the

whole thing. can be eaten as a soup or a dip.

my husband does not like beans. he likes this!
