Guest guest
wow, I never knew that, you are amazing, full of knowledge, My food saver is on a shelf likely very dusty, never used but got it out of the divorce too, he did not know what it was LOL. I know it had a little hose. It too came from Costco, sorry I do not work there but my friends say I should LOL! I buy a lot of gadgets from there including my vitamix and my ameriware cookware. Half of my cookware though is still stored at a friends. I also have a kitchen aid blender from 'C' I like it but I don't like how it lifts and lowers the bowl. the cheaper model tilts out of the bowl, I think I like that better. Guest guest
I threw away all my foodsaver canisters. They eventually crack and won't hold a seal. I use mason jars now for sealing stuff that isn't in a bag. Guest guest
I've been having trouble with sealing jars lately. When you put the lid attachment on the jar, do you press it all the way down or stop where it settles at the kinda halfway point? I've even tried soaking the lids (new) in hot water first, to try to soften the seal...but those darned things are just being difficult!! Trying to figure out if it's user error or a problem with the machine. Guest guest
You put the flat part of the lid on (no ring at this point), place the jar attachment on and press down firmly, then seal it-you should hear it "suck" in and a "ping" as the lid indents. Then, just remove the attachment and put the ring on. > > > > From: ocarolyn1@... > <ocarolyn1@...> > > Subject: Re: > Vacuum-sealing Mason jars > > To: > > > Date: Saturday, February 26, 2011, > 9:24 PM > > > > > > how do you get to > the previous discussions, I > have a foodsaver but just > the thing that seals in bags > and I never use it anywhere, > as it is quicker to put it > in a zip loc, what is the > pump n seal, > > > In a > message dated 2/25/2011 > 11:39:55 P.M. Guest guest
OK Everybody...I have been lax in telling everyone about my experiments using the Pump-n-seal " Tab-chexs " that Peggy was so kind to send to me. , you punch a small hole in the metal lid of any jar lid that has a rubber ring on the inside, put a Tab-check on it and pump the air out with either a Pump-n-Seal, a mini Foodsaver specially made for the freezer bags with the round " vacuum " ring, a Reynolds Hand VAC, no longer made, but great with " Tab-checks " and dirt cheap in thrift stores, EVEN with a regular FoodSaver if you attach a suction cup to the end of the regular hose. I had to use a really sharp paring knife to cut into the suction cup to get a hole deep enough to get it onto the FoodSaver hose end, but it also worked! I will try to post some photos in the next day or two; it was a really fun experiment and I'd love to share the results with everybody when it's not so late and I can be a little more coherent! Joyce K. as mentioned, if you have a regular long narrow Foodsaver that has a " port " for a hose for their containers, you can use the mason jar sealer she mentioned. If anyone has a Southern States store near you, they also stock the 1/2 gallon Mason Jars, which are great for storage of dry items, too! > > From: ocarolyn1@... <ocarolyn1@...> > Subject: Re: Vacuum-sealing Mason jars > > Date: Saturday, February 26, 2011, 9:24 PM > > > > > > > >  > > > > > > > > > > > > > how do you get to the previous discussions, I have a foodsaver but just the > thing that seals in bags and I never use it anywhere, as it is quicker to put it > in a zip loc, what is the pump n seal, >  > > In a message dated 2/25/2011 11:39:55 P.M. Guest guest
I like my reynolds gizmo, looks like they sold out to Debbie Meyers http://kitchen-dining.hsn.com/debbie-meyer-reynolds-handi-vac-food-sealer-with-2\ 3-bags_p-6072649_xp.aspx?web_id=6072649 & ocm=sekw I like the freezer vacuum bags very much the foodsaver ones are harder to use. I have and use these a lot for my frozen fruit. Freeze the fruit first, THEN go back and vacuum or you will have a big lump of frozen stuff. As far as I know you can only buy on HSN now which I find most irritating but I like them well enough I will get more of them rather than the foodsaver ones which say they are for the fridge only. The foodsaver handheld works fine with the reynolds bags. Guest guest
This method really isnt intended to store things for any length of time-short term, then reseal. I use it for things like seeds, nuts, grains-things that I will use every few days, or weeks at most. I can open the container, take out what I need and reseal it. I would NOT use this method alone for long term food preservation-you need HWB or pressure canning to make stored foods last. Guest guest
I had a pump n seal and threw it out. Wish I kept it as a backup for when the power goes out. Joyce K. as mentioned, if you have a regular long narrow Foodsaver that has a "port" for a hose for their containers, you can use the mason jar sealer she mentioned. If anyone has a Southern States store near you, they also stock the 1/2 gallon Mason Jars, which are great for storage of dry items, too! > > From: ocarolyn1@... <ocarolyn1@...> > Subject: Re: Vacuum-sealing Mason jars > > Date: Saturday, February 26, 2011, 9:24 PM > > > > > > > > Â > > > > > > > > > > > > > how do you get to the previous discussions, I have a foodsaver but just the > thing that seals in bags and I never use it anywhere, as it is quicker to put it > in a zip loc, what is the pump n seal, > Â > > In a message dated 2/25/2011 11:39:55 P.M.
