Guest guest
My main point is that you have to be careful with chemists. I don't believe a good proportion of them *try* to be natural unless they think it will make them money. Hi, I *know* this is not true. But then again, I am sitting somewhat on the other side of the fence. I can think of several companies with chemists on staff off the top of my head that provide " natural " ingredients - like jojoba beads, (exfolients), wheat starch products, (haircare), other grain products, (soy, rice, oat), for moisturizers, emmolients, and emulsifiers, micronized Titanium Dioxide for sunscreens that are clear, amino acid based moisturizers, gelled oils like canola, sunflower, aloe, hemp), for petrolatum substitutes, talc substitutes, gums like guar for hair conditoners, lipospheres - outside gellatin or agar and inside vitamins like E (you practically need a PhD for this technology), stable Vit. C, and it goes on and on. Point is - who is making all this stuff? And, my preferences are like Pat, I even make my grandsons baby food fresh because even though jar doesn't contian preservatives - I don't belive it is as good as what I make on the spot. By all means natural - but safety first! I also find it interesting how many people now use nondescrept " emulsifying wax " without even knowing what it is - no one on the boards even knew it existed until a " chemist " told them. Guest guest
You know, it makes me wonder ( and only hope) that the people who are so concerned with the preservatives, are as particular to what goes IN their bodies as well as ON. YOU must have purifiers on all your water taps, eat strictly organically grown foods, including organic beef, chicken & eggs, there is no white sugar in your homes & for sure noone smokes or drinks. If so where you all been? We started to do that in the 60's, but seem to have lost all those folks! Nice to know that your all still out there! Guest guest
Dee, there is a list specifically for cosmetic questions such as this that you may want to subscribe to. Try going here and once subscribed look at the archived messages. There is a wealth of information I have found to be extremely educational (to say the least). There are two chemists that reside on this list (so to speak <g>) who are very generous with both their time and information. One of the post threads had to do with the fact that there is no such INCI ingredient " emulsifying wax. " There is apparently only one company that manufactures it in the US and it is a proprietary product. So you really *don't* know exactly what you're using and according to the FDA cannot list it in your ingredients as " emulsifying wax. " I have learned ALOT from this list. Those same posts also tells you exactly what it is and ALL about emulsions and appropriate emulsifiers. Sounds pretty boring, doesn't it? When we use products containing chemicals on our skin, those chemicals wind up in our bodies as well as on them. Since the skin is the largest organ of the body, shouldn't we be careful about what we put on it? I respect those people who choose to use preservatives and I have nothing against chemists, but I do think that this list is for exchanging ideas and none of us need to be personally attacked for our ideas. Better that we exchange our information and educate each other patiently. None of us is entirely wrong or right, but I think we are all searching for a better way to produce our products safely. Guest guest
I for one, would like to KNOW what emulsifying wax is! I really don't know. I usually use beeswax but bought some emulsifying wax for lotions but haven't made any or used it because I have no clue what it really is. Looks like beads of paraffin to me. ANyone know? Guest guest
Thankyou so much! I will definitely go there. (snip.) Yes Margaret, as one of the people on the list that firmly believes in preservatives and following the law, I am more concerned with what goes in my body than on it. We do have filtration systems on our drinking water and up to a few years ago we distilled all our drinking water. If so where you all been? We started to do that in the > 60's, but seem to have lost all those folks! Nice to know that your all > still out there! We are still here. Some of us have grown up, others haven't. I would like to think that we are a little wiser, but that is a perception. We still believe strongly in what we believe to be right, and we still work to accomplish what is good for society. Pat. Sounds pretty boring, doesn't > it? Not boring at all Carol. I have seen a lot of people " talk " about natural that use their bodies like the local garbage dump. In anything you do, you must consider the whole you, Body, Mind, and Spirit. > When we use products containing chemicals on our skin, those chemicals wind > up in our bodies as well as on them. Actually this came up recently on another list and according to the chemists there are very few chemicals that will penetrate the skin and go into the body, other than those that are specifically formulated to do this like the smokers patch. Since the skin is the largest organ of > the body, shouldn't we be careful about what we put on it? This is true. You don't want to put a product on your skin that could result in you losing your eyesight. Using products that are not properly preserved is dangerous. I respect those > people who choose to use preservatives and I have nothing against chemists, > but I do think that this list is for exchanging ideas and none of us need to > be personally attacked for our ideas. Funny how perception works. The only people I have seen attacked are those that use preservatives and try to pass their knowledge on to others. At one time there were 4 cosmetic chemists on this list. They left because of the verbal abuse they got from members of this list. Better that we exchange our > information and educate each other patiently. None of us is entirely wrong > or right, but I think we are all searching for a better way to produce our > products safely. I have learned a lot from this list and I try to give back to those that are willing to listen and learn. If you are selling a cosmetic product in the US then there are laws that you must follow. Proper preservation is not something that you can take or leave, it is required by the law. There are close to 1400 people on this list. I am not trying to change the minds of people who are entrenched in doing things the wrong way. The FDA or a lawsuit will catch up to them sooner or later. I am interested in getting accurate information to those that want to do things legally and the right way the first time. Since I believe in treating the whole person, Body, Mind, and Spirit, it would go against everything I believe in if I didn't speak out about preserving properly. Pat.
