Guest guest
Sue, Maybe letting her play with the mask just to get used to it. Then, letting her get used to the air with out the mask, then add both. I hope this helps. , mom to Bridget 12 ds in SC BiPap Anyone have any tips on how to get a very stubborn 9 year old to wear a BiPap nasal mask? She actually gagged when the air hit her face. Guest guest
The most comfortable mask I have ever used is called SWIFT. It's very soft and doesn't hurt your nose at all. In my opinion, using a mask that covers both your nose and mouth is scary, because there can be a power outage, and in that case you would have a real problem with breathing. Also, insist your doctor to increase the pressure level. Mine is 20/4 and it works great. One more thing. Your BiPAP should have ST. That makes a big difference when you sleep. Guest guest
Thanks for your reply. Unfortunately, I can't use nasal pillows because my mouth falls open at night, and a chin strap doesn't work. Can you tell me what you mean by " ST? Guest guest
I would recommend getting a sleep study if no one else already suggested it. Only then will you get accurate readings on what settings you'll need. Everyone is different but mine are very high and every 6 years or so I'll get another sleep study to see if the settings need to be adjust. Another note on sleep--I take about 1 or 2 teaspoons of benadryl at night before I go to bed. It helps clear any congestion and makes me a little drowsy which helps. One thing that is a pain is the noise of all my machines. I use an oxygen concentrator too and it is so loud! I would like to move it to another room, but that would be a mess of tubes and cables in the home. Does anyone have that problem too, noisy machines at bedtime? > >> > >>> ** > >>> > >>> > >>> Another question, > >>> > >>> I finally got a BiPap machine because of my > >> hypoventilation. Guest guest
I got a BiPap machine a few yrs ago - I used it less then a week ago and gave the damn thing back. I had the most awful nightmares - I don't have sleep problems or nightmare issues but when I used that thing I did. Personally I don't think it is anything you need to see a shrink over if you don't normally experience nightmares. Has it been only since you've been using the machine? If not - then it might be something you might want to talk to someone about. Maybe its a mixture of medications you are on as well? > > Another question, > > I finally got a BiPap machine because of my hypoventilation. However, its not helping me feel better. I still don't enter REM sleep, yet I'm having intense nightmares every night that I wake up shaking from fear every morning. My sleep specialist said he doesn't know why, but that its possibly stress and told me to go see a shrink. I'm already on an antidepressant & anti-anxiety meds. I've taken them for years. But what the nightmares? Its been pratically a year since they started. Guest guest
BiPAP is NEVER the reason for nightmares, unless its settings are wrong. Not using it when your oxygen level is low is extremely dangerous in a long run. ________________________________ From: WildFlower63 <wildflower63@...> Sent: Saturday, July 30, 2011 6:22 PM Subject: Re: BiPap  I got a BiPap machine a few yrs ago - I used it less then a week ago and gave the damn thing back. Guest guest
Meg and I talk regularly and Kudos Meg for searching out all information from the folks who deal with these medical treatments themselves. Now do not follow me but folks at this group please listen- at least for a short moment- to another view and real experience. For this bi pap user I have medical complications, bureaucracy, and zealoted care providers colliding together into one big mess. I have recently gone through medical hell from a boney growth erupting in the roof of my mouth caused after years of a top MDA clinics advising I have bone density drugs by I.V. that now are considered " ten times a lifetime's dose " by other doctors. I began to get nerve and bone pain between the pressure on my face and from my mouth that happened every time I used any Bi Pap Mask. I also got chest pains, fatigue, and lowering O2 sats after doing everything medically ordered everytime while using my cough assist or bi pap routine. Doctors are now explaining that CHF congestive heart failure is part of the torture symptoms I'm having while using [not caused by] these treatments. Now I do not think any MDA clinic drs ever wanted me to have any bad side effects or any discomfort from any treatments they recommended. What bothers me now is when some members of the clinic I go to shriek at me over the phone that I am an ingrate because of the number of hours I can tolerate on the bi pap. Tell me I'm being a whimp, not trying enough, etc. I understand medicaid bureaucracy and paperwork burdens put on clinics but at the same time I'm a human being trying the best I can while facing many tough life and death by myself and with a heckling sqaud being paid to have front row seats to brow beat me in the process as well as gossip about me to other people. An sma clinic care provider voicing their opinions to myself and naming other clinic families- " this patient got rid of their feeding tube despite what I told them to do " , " That family just got pregnant again " , and informing me, " Well we'll just traech you if you won't use the mask enough " and, " When we vent you... " ,.... and more unprofessional remarks and medical privacy violations than I can count, just make me feel more isolated than ever with this disability. I ask all out there dealing with SMA to remember and give a crap for us folks who are square pegs having a hard time trying in vain to fit into the unnecessarily round sma cookie cutter hole. > > Another question, > > I finally got a BiPap machine because of my hypoventilation.
