Guest guest
If your jars have an indentation, you don't have true wide mouth jars! They should be totally straight. I think mine are Ball brand, but I will have a look. My favorite are the pint jars-just right for a loaf of bread, although I often use the jelly jars too. I am going to post some pics too. I just found a picture I have of some cooking in my solar oven in the wide mouth jars, but haven't figured out how to post it yet, lol From: K <kamako@...>Subject: Re: Yippee! Guest guest
Ita, Lee Ann - I've been thinking of planning a field trip to visit , just to observe her and learn from all that she does and knows. I figured that she wouldn't mind if I bring my camper and park it out in front of her house for about a week or so. I'll bring entertainment and everything! (eg., Scrabble, Boggle, dominoes, etc.) I'm sure that she won't even notice that I'm following her around with a video cam. I'll be so incognito... she won't even realize I'm there. Oh, and I'll bring my daughter, too, so that she can learn from 's daughter. Though my daughter is only 10, she's got a very clever and canny mind (which is what I have gathered 's daughter is very much like), and I imagine that Alice would have many good things to learn from 's daughter, as I would from . So. . Don't be surprised if I should up on your doorstep someday. (Only kidding. I would never do that to anybody. )FrannyOn Feb 10, 2011, at 10:29 AM, Lea Ann Savage wrote: I have wide mouth jars, but there is still an indentation - I look forward to your file! Guest guest
A Scrabble coffee table? That's awesome!! My husband hates to play Scrabble (but he won't hesitate to chime in when my mom, my daughter, and I play, lol), but since I was having to do all the hard work when giving birth to our first child (I had a natural birth in a hospital birthing center), I told him that he had to indulge me and play Scrabble with me between contractions. lol! yeah, the Scrabble game never did come out of the box that night. But he was game to play (and a perfect birthing coach, too!) if I wanted to, so he got big points for that. :)FrannyOn Feb 10, 2011, at 12:10 PM, Berry wrote: Bring it on, Franny! Guest guest
I can actually solve your "how to power up" Franny! We are major campers too, and doing without electricity is not an option, no matter HOW remote of an area we are in! I got a couple of "power inverters" that you can charge up from home electricity or your car battery, and they will run small appliances! I found one of them on sale for 50 bucks at a Black and Decker store, the other I got at at a yard sale for 10 bucks!!! My teenager is very adept at camping and "roughing it", but NOT without her hair dryer and straightening iron! And I am not willing to go without kitchen gadgets! They are also great if you have a storm and lose power. We recently had just that very thing happen, but we were able to carry on as usual until the power came back on. I also have a solar power inverter, but it isn't strong enough to run the Vitamix-great for recharging cell phones and stuff, though! From: K <kamako@...>Subject: Re: Yippee! Guest guest
My daughter and I play Scrabble almost daily. I homeschooled her through 6th grade, and Scrabble was a mainstay teaching tool. My family is spread out all of the world, and we all have the online version where we can play eachother. I have no less than 8 online games on the go at any given time. When I bought my ipad, I had a hard time convincing my 76 year old mother that she would like one too, but when I mentioned we could play Scrabble on it even though we are 700 miles apart, she jumped all over it...and we play daily! I made my coffee table from an old flea market beat up table, a scrabble game I found at a yard sale, and a piece of glass-whole thing cost me about 5 bucks to make, lol. It has a "lazy susan" center, so the board can be swiveled to each player. From: Franny Lesniak <frannyfly@...>Subject: Re: Mason Jar Quick Breads Date: Thursday, February 10, 2011, 1:01 PM Ita, Lee Ann - I've been thinking of planning a field trip to visit , just to observe her and learn from all that she does and knows. Guest guest
's right--the wide-mouth Ball jars have no shoulders. They're also the jars of choice for freezing for this very reason. Guest guest
Funny, I was JUST about to post about this. I looked at my VAST collection of jars today, and indeed some of the so called "wide mouth" ones DO have a shoulder (perfect word -I was going to call it a lip, lol) Some of my larger jars do have just such a shoulder, but the pint, 1/2 pints and some of the quart ones are totally straight, making it easy to dump out baked things. We do all sorts of "dinner-in-a-jar" recipes, and my daughter is crazy for "jar omelets" which we cook in our solar oven. She has frequent sleepovers with her non vegetarian friends and this way I am able to offer a selection of goodies for the meat eaters without crossing meat into my daughter's vegetarian stuff. Guest guest
I just "groped" one of my jars; the "business" portion of the jar is completely straight and there's a very slight indentation (more of a hesitation, really) to account for the thread for the lids (which I understand is called the "finish"). Given that successfully uses these jars for quick breads, it would seem that it makes no difference.
