PLEASE read the manual and watch the DVD before even THINKING about making anything. Trust me, getting familiar in this way will save you potential frustration. The Vitamix is easy to operate but only after you've mastered the shallow learning curve involved.

What should I make?

I ordered my Vitamix, and I can hardly wait to receive it!! I am soooo excited. What should I make? I am eating somewhat restricted right now (no meat or dairy), but only for a few more weeks. But my family can do whatever.

Would love to hear simple favorites.

Nah, I thought I'd just dive in without having a clue.

LOL! I'm a manual freak - I'll probably read it through at least 3 times, watch the DVD, and devour anything else they send me in the way of instructions. But when I'm done - I'll want the ingredients on hand for the wonderful whatevers I'm going to make :):):)

So does anyone have any favorite, must make?

My favourite is the green smoothie we have each day - Blend 2 -3 cups water, supplements (2 scoops protein powder, 2 scoops Vital Greens, 2T flax seeds, 2T chia seeds, 1generous T Fibre Cleanse) until well blended, add 5 or 6 large spinach or kale leaves, a handful of celery tops, blend until greens are incorporated, add 2 bananas (frozen or fresh), 2-3 pieces other fruit (apple, pear, stone fruit, kiwi fruit) and blend on high up to a minute. This lasts hubby and I 2 days and keeps ok in the fridge.

With Cyclone Yasi decimating banana plantations in northern QLD, they are predicting the price of bananas to go up to nearly AU$18 per kilo (it reached nearly $13 a kilo after Cyclone Larry a few years ago), so I bought a couple of kilos yesterday at AU$2.98 for the freezer and will get in as many more as I can - we can't have smoothies without bananas!

Oh. My favorite I'd the hummus from the cookbook. After that, strawberry ice cream using a bag of frozen strawberries and some cream. Sometimes a little sugar if you want the sweetness. TerrySent from my iPadOn Feb 3, 2011, at 8:14 PM, Mom2_five <mom2_five@...> wrote:

FANTASTIC!!!! You wait and see how quickly it'll come to you with the book smarts behind you! In the meantime, why not start putting together the fixings for some nice ice cream, i.e., freezing some cubes and very ripe fruit?

Use light cream or half-and-half to start--you don't want to end up with butter. :)

Let them get REALLY ripe first--they make the best smoothies.

Good idea . I already have a lot of frozen bananas. So glad I have something more to make with them now, than just banana bread.

Bananas are so good in smoothies, too. Hey, maybe you could come up with a peanut butter and banana ice cream! You could make the peanut butter, too! Honey would make an excellent sweetener. :)

I think using the vitamix is a lot like cooking. I read several recipes, get

the general idea and then work with the ingredients that I have on hand and what

I like. Everyone's taste is a bit different. Start out using pre-existing

recipes and then adapt them as you get more comfortable with the machine and

amounts. I personally add mint to most of my smoothies and have tried to go a

bit green with celery and parsnips or carrots mixed with fruit. I got my

machine right before Christmas and of course all the summer fruits were coming

to an end. You will also make recipes according to the seasons and what is

available. Most important, leave your machine out on the counter so it is right

there to use.

Deb, you are going to love your Vita Mix.

the first thing I made and continue to make since I got mine a week or so ago is

Lea Anns recipe for her Green Smoothie from her website, it is great, I have it

2 times a day.

If you use honey roasted peanuts to make the peanut butter, then no extra

sweetener needed! And the peanut butter is great on its own. That is the only

peanut butter we use anymore!

I picked fresh bananas is Anguilla when I was there. I concur, there

something special about eating breakfast on the hoof. Was weird to see the

trees cut down after harvesting.

yes, you have to cut down the plant the bananas grew on (my husband hates that

chore because it's messy) but you always have three plants growing at one

time...papa, mama and baby...and when papa produces his bananas and we cut him

down, mama banana plant grows up to be papa next and then baby becomes

mama....we get about two harvests a year...sometimes it's been two at the same

time...but that's rare. Our colder weather has made the leaves of the plants

look shabby but hasn't seem to affect the bananas at all...
