Depends on what you like. They have "testers" that you can smell. They have a number of nice salt-free blends and their spices and herbs are all of excellent quality. If you plan on making tortilla soup, pick up some adobo and Arizona Dreaming. Their double vanilla is out of this world and they have many different types of cinnamon, including true cinnamon from Ceylon--I keep it, the Vietnamese, the China, and the new blend on hand at all times and use them for different kinds of recipes. Make sure you pick up the current catalog and if they have any copies of the holiday catalog lying around, grab one.

I LOVE Penzeys. Their prices are no higher than McCormick and the quality is of a different order altogether. There's nothing so appealing as a fanatic and these folks are passionate about their products. OH, and before I forget, if you like black pepper and grind your own, make sure you pick up some Extra Bold--it's outstanding and you can store what you're not using in the freezer. Also, I've become a big fan of aleppo pepper so I personally think that's worth picking up as well (it's my new go-to seasoning for just about everything--gives food a nice punch). Unless you know you're going to be using a lot of something, get small jars.

Penzey's

I am planning on a trip here for the first time this weekend and I am excited to explore all the goodies. Does anyone have a favorite spice, recipe or great suggestion? Thanks.

A trip to Penzey's is definitely an experience... Your olfactory senses will be

assaulted at first, then things calm down just a wee bit. I usually go in for

" one or two things " ... And end up coming out with a bag full of stuff. Oddly

enough, it doesn't cost much! You will probably find yourself throwing out most

of your " store bought " spices and replacing them with Penzey's over time...

There are now only a few non-Penzey's (with a couple things from Spices Etc..,

another online spice merchant that I like) items in my pantry/spice cupboard.

The difference in flavor and aroma between the " Spice Islands/McCormick's "

brands and Penzey's is amazing.

The prices are quite reasonable for most things -- sometimes surprisingly low.

There are a few things that are fairly pricey but the quality is *always* top

notch. I have *never* been disappointed with any products that I purchased

there, and the customer service is top notch.

I'm probably going this weekend to pick up a couple of things that I want for

" Vitamix Experimentation " (insert evil laugh).

Be sure to ask them to put you on their mailing list so you get their seasonal catalogs which are full of info and recipes.  They often have coupons for freebies too and ask your Penzey if they will honor their coupons if expired.  I save my coupons and they always take regardless of date because they know their stores are far and few between and people often travel a bit to get there.  I agree Penzeys spices are quality all the way!

I am so excited and your suggestions are great. , thanks for your specific recommendations. The double vanilla sounds yummy. I cannot wait to explore and thanks to your replies I am going to give myself ample time to look around. Arlene, I would of never known about the coupons and the other information so thank you for that awareness. And thank you for your input. I will be like you when I get home experimenting all weekend with my new toys - haha. Let me know if you make anything amazing.

I didn't realize how lucky I was that I have one close by but have never been. Come on 5pm....haha.

We love the sausage mixes, make your own sausage, yum. Also I love all the

different peppers and cinnamons they have. Except for the sausage mixes I always

buy the small jars, they are soooo fragrant and yummy. I have a cupboard full

of Penzeys, shop is about 10 miles away, so not a big deal for me.
