That's the perfect attitude! Get your feet wet and if it's comfy, start

thinking a little bigger.

Oh, geez--ANYTHING would be better than that unless you don't keep up

with it. :o

I hate to repeat what I've already posted but I've been juicing

seriously since 1988. Now that that's out of the way, until 2009, I

only used a Champion which, to my way of thinking (and to Norwalk's) is

second only to the Norwalk for all-around juicing. However, if you find

yourself using a Jack LaLanne but not a Champion, that's the way to go

because a juicer--like any appliance--is only good if you use it....

Thanks - will do. I belong to Freecycle, but went no mail a long time ago. GIVING stuff away was such a hassle! My inbox filled up, people kept sending requests even though I said it'd been claimed - then no shows on picking up. Crazy. I'm sitting there waiting for a no show while my family is waiting for me so we can go on an outing. So I gave up and take stuff to the Salvation Army. However, you're not really supposed to ask for stuff if you don't give stuff. But maybe I'll give it another try. Craig's list - great idea. I'll definitely keep my eyes peeled.

I truly think a Champion and a press is a better poor man's Norwalk. The trituration is slower (and less likely to leave chunks because there's no way the produce can miss the cutter) and it's easier to get everything out of it; you can also just juice with it and then press the pulp. There's a reason why this the Gerson clinic's recommended alternative; I'm certain they're aware of the existence of our beloved Vitamix. And of course, if one doesn't have a Champion, using the Vitamix and a press is better than nothing. But a Champion/press is a better option.

I think I'd go with making one if I felt I could. The whole point of

using a press-combo is to save money over the cost of the integrated

(and much smaller overall) Norwalk. Might as well save as much as

possible. :)

,I'm not understanding why one would use a press along with a Champion. My Champion is 40 years old, had to replace a couple of parts, but continues to make excellent juice. If my pulp happens to come out a little wet, this hardly ever happens, I just run it back through. I don't think a press would give me any additional juice. Thanks for all your input. This is AWESOME Mom2_five! (I know that's not your name :-)

I would seriously consider getting one from you. I am convinced that

if someone had a good juice press and a Vitamix that it would be a

"poor man's Norwalk". Could never be as good as a Norwalk (in

convenience), but might come close in performance.

I would puree in the Vitamix rather than suffer the hassle of cleaning

the Champion (I have one). Also, you can't do greens easily in the

champion, but the Vitamix would make Greens pulp in a snap! I'm going

to try to make carrot juice today in the Vitamix - if I can produce

carrot pulp that is not diluted with anything in the VM, then I would

be totally convinced that the combo of a Vitamix and a good juice press

would = a "poor man's Norwalk". If I got your press I'd do a YouTube

video on it!

Last time we had this discussion about presses, I was inspired to try pressing pulp through a nutmilk bag using a metal tortilla press that I got at a Mexican grocery store for 7 dollars (like this one http://www.google.com/products/catalog?hl= & q=tortilla+press & rlz=1B3GGLL_enUS367US367 & um=1 & ie=UTF-8 & cid=7212563989435147313 & ei=odVGTYLiF8jngQf9rM3ZAQ & sa=X & oi=product_catalog_result & ct=result & resnum=5 & ved=0CDoQ8wIwBA#)The results were pretty impressive, considering! It took a good bit of heft to press it, but I was able to extract much more juice from the pulp than I expected to. I turned the bag a couple of times and pressed again, each time getting a little more. I set the press on a tray to catch the juice. Not an ideal set up, but took it from "poor man's"

juicer to total "ghetto juicer", with a decent result! From: Deborah Drake, ND <dkdrake.nd@...>Subject: Re: Juicing with the Vitamix Date: Monday, January 31, 2011, 10:18 AM

I recommend filtering replies into folders for freecycle posts, to make it easier to wade through them or ignore posts after you say the item is listed. I also run a local "cheapcycle" group, where things are traded, and several online yardsale groups. You might look to see if there are any of those in your area too. Half the fun of my day is seeing what I can obtain, give, trade, barter, or recycle. Good fun, good stuff to be found!

I studied this a lot just a few months ago. My sister found out she has cancer

just this past September. Fortunately they don't even want to do chemo or

radiation but they are saying she will keep having to have surgery to remove

tumors for the rest of her life to try to keep ahead of it. It's carcinoid

cancer that started in her small intestines and spread to the lymph system and

then the liver.

Anyway the family all started researching the best things to do. I already knew

about Gerson and finally won them over to the idea. My mom and I got a Norwalk

and we had juicing parties with about 6 of us at a time cleaning, peeling,

grinding, pressing, filling jars, etc. We have a nice little system down. We can

do enough for all of us with my sister and mom getting at least 4 glasses of

carrot/apple juice a day for 4-5 days. So they get about 20 jars each. I'm happy

with 1 a day.

I talked to Gerson and they said that she needs 13 glasses a day - 6

carrot/apple, 6 green drinks and one fresh OJ. We've never done the orange juice

for breakfast.

The Norwalk was at my house for a while but it was too big of a deal so we took

it to her so she could juice once a day instead of the big 3 hour ordeal. She

hasn't done it and it's been since early December. I'm really trying not to be

pushy about it but I don't understand why she isn't juicing.

She also wont change her diet by eating raw foods or cut out meat, dairy and

sugar. She isn't taking any of big cancer fighting herbs she can choose from.

It's very frustrating but we can't live other people's lives.

Gerson said for someone with fibromyalgia, 8 glasses of juice is recommended. I

think it was for a year but now I am not sure the length of time. They also told

my sister that she should have no more than 4 glasses per coffee enema. I may

call them and ask about that myself. 2-3 coffee enemas per day sounds like too

much. But she said they told her that if she wont do the enemas (which she wont)

then she should only do 4 glasses a day - which will not stop her cancer.

She's very paranoid about health stuff. She's scared of all the natural things

it seems. They took part of her liver so she's afraid to detox. It has grown

back now but she's scared to death to do anything so she keeps eating junk. She

and I are polar opposites.

She does have a VitaMix and I believe she is drinking a smoothie every day. That

does not give her the volume of nutrients that go into the empty stomach and are

absorbed in mass into the blood stream. The fiber in the smoothie slows the

absorption down and fills her up too quick to get the nutrients she needs.

LOL, I was thinking the same thing after watching the Gerson Miracle. No way could I juice THAT much. However, I am thinking that the ever hour was for severe illness. I am still not sure what they recommended for maintenance.

I've been giving my children a glass of juice every morning using for each: 2 med. to large carrots and 1 apple. For myself, I've been doing the same, plus 1 lg. stalk of celery and a slice of ginger. I used to make the same, minus the celery and plus a beet.

I am wondering how it will be to freeze my veggies for use through the winter, in the vitamix.

, you're a sweetie and I always ran my pulp through my Champion

twice as well (this was before I'd heard of nut milk bags). Believe it

or not, the amount of extra juice that can be gotten using a press is

significant. 5 lbs. of peeled carrots and an apple or two give me a

good half-gallon of juice--that's a lot! Not only that but, Carol, the

president of Norwalk, explained that what you want to watch for when

you press is the thin, watery juice that's extracted at the last--those

are the minerals. It seems they're the last holdouts in the juicing

process and you miss them unless you keep pressing. This was confirmed

when I noticed that the " solids " at the bottom of my juice jars

contained a lot of white.

Deb, So sorry about your sister. In her defense though, please keep in mind that she may still be in total denial about her diagnosis, and her brain hasn't processed the importance of taking drastic steps. Sadly, it may be too late by the time she DOES realize it, which is often the case. Most of us are raised to pop a pill for every little ailment, and when it seems that no pill is going to do the trick, it's a hard concept to accept that we have to take actions for ourselves. I was already sick and crippled with lupus when I was given a diagnosis of leukemia and told to "get my affairs in order". It was far easier for me to want to pull the covers over my head (and the wool over my eyes) than to accept what I was being told. Fortunately, I was motivated enough by my young daughter to realize that I HAD to take drastic

measures, and I was able to. My doctors are still scratching their heads as to how I am still here, kicking and screaming, all these years later. My point is, please be persistent and supportive of your sister's resistance to try the juicing approach. There is likely WAY more to her resistance than just not taking the steps. She may need help processing the whole thing, not just the potential benefits.,___

We were going to use it in tandom with our Jack LaLanne juicer, to get more juice from the pulp (as recommended in Gerson Therapy - but they recommend a Norwalk or Champaion). Here's the link to the press my husband is making:

I am in total agreement with . I was diagnosed with cancer a few yrs ago.

I went through chemical depression with the chemo, and it has taken a few years

STILL to get past the depression, but even if she is not going to do chemo just

the sheer magnatude of knowing she will be fighting this for a long time would

possibbly cause depression whether she conciously realizes it or not. I do

think one goes thru a bit of denial/resistance with this. I think with your

continued support she will come around, of course in the end it is up to her,

but try to hang in there as long as you can. You are a great family to be there

for her, I had no-one.

>

> Deb, So sorry about your sister.  In her defense though, please keep in mind

that she may still be in total denial about her diagnosis, and her brain hasn't

processed the importance of taking drastic steps.  Sadly, it may be too late by

the time she DOES realize it, which is often the case.  Most of us are raised to

pop a pill for every little ailment, and when it seems that no pill is going to

do the trick, it's a hard concept to accept that we have to take actions for

ourselves.  I was already sick and crippled with lupus when I was given a

diagnosis of leukemia and told to " get my affairs in order " .  It was far easier

for me to want to pull the covers over my head (and the wool over my eyes) than

to accept what I was being told.  Fortunately, I was motivated enough by my

young daughter to realize that I HAD to take drastic measures, and I was able

to.  My doctors are still scratching their heads as to how I am still here,

kicking and screaming,

> all these years later.  My point is, please be persistent and supportive of

your sister's resistance to try the juicing approach.  There is likely WAY more

to her resistance than just not taking the steps.  She may need help processing

the whole thing, not just the potential benefits.
