Guest guest
this is interesting! My husband and I watched the Gerson Miracle and The Ugly truth and it totally sparked my interest. I would love to juice daily- maybe not every hour as for a family of 5- we'd be living on the streets with our vitamix and produce However- If I can start every day with a fresh juice- the kids as well- I think that would be an excellent start and not too pricey- just this morning I did- a carrot, and apple, a pinch of spinach, splash of 100% pomegrate juice and a dollop of vanilla yogurt and the kids had it no problem. My daughter said it was filling. So really a drink would count as a meal right? Sorry now I'm getting OT- I will be following this topic Nadine Cruz-Saubert From: Mom2_five <mom2_five@...>Subject: Juicing with the Vitamix Date: Monday, January 31, 2011, 7:11 AM Who here juices with their Vitamix? I was watching the video posted earlier, and how she is pressing out the juice by hand through a bag. My husband is in the process of making us a press, and I'm thinking it could be used with the Vitamix. We were going to use it in tandom with our Jack LaLanne juicer, to get more juice from the pulp (as recommended in Gerson Therapy - but they recommend a Norwalk or Champaion). Guest guest
This is AWESOME Mom2_five! (I know that's not your name :-)I would seriously consider getting one from you. I am convinced that if someone had a good juice press and a Vitamix that it would be a "poor man's Norwalk". Could never be as good as a Norwalk (in convenience), but might come close in performance.I would puree in the Vitamix rather than suffer the hassle of cleaning the Champion (I have one). Also, you can't do greens easily in the champion, but the Vitamix would make Greens pulp in a snap! I'm going to try to make carrot juice today in the Vitamix - if I can produce carrot pulp that is not diluted with anything in the VM, then I would be totally convinced that the combo of a Vitamix and a good juice press would = a "poor man's Norwalk". If I got your press I'd do a YouTube video on it! Guest guest
LOL, I was thinking the same thing after watching the Gerson Miracle. No way could I juice THAT much. However, I am thinking that the ever hour was for severe illness. I am still not sure what they recommended for maintenance. I've been giving my children a glass of juice every morning using for each: 2 med. to large carrots and 1 apple. For myself, I've been doing the same, plus 1 lg. stalk of celery and a slice of ginger. I used to make the same, minus the celery and plus a beet. I am wondering how it will be to freeze my veggies for use through the winter, in the vitamix. Guest guest
We bought the e-book off of the site - it looks as though it's not going to cost much at all to make. He's gotten most of what is needed - we just need to shop for the pans. Then he got the cold that went through our family. He totally had planned to make it this past weekend. Hopefully in the next few days, now that he's well. As soon as I get my Vitamix, I'll try it out with the press. How soon after I place my order will I receive the Vitamix? Both use a bottle jack (at least that's how it looks). Homemade -- MUCH cheaper, and will do the same thing. Deb

Guest guest
I truly think a Champion and a press is a better poor man's Norwalk. The trituration is slower (and less likely to leave chunks because there's no way the produce can miss the cutter) and it's easier to get everything out of it; you can also just juice with it and then press the pulp. There's a reason why this the Gerson clinic's recommended alternative; I'm certain they're aware of the existence of our beloved Vitamix. And of course, if one doesn't have a Champion, using the Vitamix and a press is better than nothing. But a Champion/press is a better option. Re: Juicing with the Vitamix  This is AWESOME Mom2_five! Guest guest
You can freeze produce for use in smoothies and such but not for juice (with the exception of grasses which then have to be juiced before they thaw). Juicing requires fresh produce in prime condition; freezing ruptures cell walls and once the produce thaws, it's too mushy to juice. Guest guest
, Since I am not going to be making any other purchases besides the Vitamix anytime soon, thus no Champion, would you say that the Vitamix would be a better or equal solution to the Jack LaLanne juicer? I mean, nutrition wise. Obviously, the Vitamix would be easier cleanup. Guest guest
Oh, geez--ANYTHING would be better than that unless you don't keep up with it. I hate to repeat what I've already posted but I've been juicing seriously since 1988. Now that that's out of the way, until 2009, I only used a Champion which, to my way of thinking (and to Norwalk's) is second only to the Norwalk for all-around juicing. However, if you find yourself using a Jack LaLanne but not a Champion, that's the way to go because a juicer--like any appliance--is only good if you use it. I advise people who want to start juicing to try to borrow a juicer (goodness knows there are enough people out there who don't use them after buying them) to try the whole concept on for size, then invest if it's a fit. As can confirm, used Champions can often be had for cheap so that's worth looking into. You can also start with the Vitamix and a press (and BTW, I think building a press to use for juice is a great idea if you think you'll use it) and see what you think. If Lea Ann builds a press, she can try it both ways and then report because she has a Champion. I'm SO glad that some members here are open to proper juicing. As has been noted previously, what the Vitamix produces isn't juice and even if it can be doctored to taste good, it's still not going to taste like juice. I wish I could direct you to the Norwalk forum but the server is down and hasn't been repaired yet (the owner's granddaughter managed to break it during the holidays; we have a member named who has been juicing since the '60s and who has the best juicing advice on the planet and from many different perspectives (I don't think there's a juicer that he hasn't used). He started with a Braun and ultimately worked his way up to a Norwalk and it's his advice to borrow first that I pass along. I'll post when the site is operative again if anyone's interested. Guest guest
please excuse the newbie ignorance but when I stick 2 veggies, 2 fruits and ice in the vitamix-what is it called? blended beverage? and if I add a thickener- like yogurt, egg whites, protein powder, flaxseed its a smoothie? How do the benefits differ from a real "juicer." I like the vitamix because it uses everything- drink it all up fibers and all. For those of you that use a real high quality juicer- what do you do with the pulp? Guest guest
Deb, just for kicks try posting a WANTED for a champion on your local freecycle group-that how I got mine, didn't cost me a cent and it was in perfect condition, I seriously doubt it had ever been used. I have also bought a Champion for brother off of craigslist-I think I paid 25 for it. I have also seen one sell at a local auction for 7 dollars! People buy them or get them as gifts, never use them, then are happy to give them away or sell them for way less, since many have no idea how much one costs new. If you aren't familiar with freecycle, go to http://www.freecycle.org and find your local one. Guest guest
I juice in my Champion or Vitamix, depending on if I want a clear juice or cloudy with the fiber. If I use the Champion, I use the leftover pulp to make raw bars (just mix with yogurt and a bit of agave nectar and form into a log, then slice into "patties") I also add the pulp to baked muffins, quick breads, etc. Some of it is used in a compost tea I make for my plants, or for my garden worm farms. From: & lt;kareningotham@... & gt;Subject: Re: Juicing with the Vitamix Date: Monday, January 31, 2011, 9:21 AM I truly think a Champion and a press is a better poor man's Norwalk. The trituration is slower (and less likely to leave chunks becausethere's no way the produce can miss the cutter) and it's easier to geteverything out of it; you can also just juice with it and then pressthe pulp. Guest guest
Whatever you want! I take mine to the compost drop-off. There's a place for juice and there's a place for smoothies. Juice gives you immediate nutrition without the body's having to deal with trying to digest fiber (which, as we all know, is indigestible). If you're getting enough fiber in your diet, not everything you consume has to have it. In addition, for those who are ill, the use of juice allows the body to take in a lot more nutrients than it could if one were eating only whole foods because as we all know (especially those trying to lose weight), fiber is filling. This is critical in the case of those who are in serious physical distress, e.g., cancer patients because they need nutrients a lot more than they need fiber. Max Gerson, who claimed to have gotten near-miraculous results with juice therapy (and mind you, I'm just reporting here, not editorializing) assumed, on the basis that whole foods are optimal, that he would get similar or better results with them, only to discover that it wasn't so. I believe the Gerson diet also uses whole foods and raw produce but only in addition to fresh juice--that's the most important element. Norman also believed in the benefits of a raw diet with lots of salads and such but in addition to juice (it's due to his efforts that juicing took off--he was kind of the " father of juicing " ). I personally don't buy totally into any guru's health program but I know what makes sense to me and juicing makes sense to me and has since I first was forced into becoming a vegetarian. We have other threads that deal with juicing in the archives for those who are interested. Re: Juicing with the Vitamix Date: Monday, January 31, 2011, 9:21 AM Â I truly think a Champion and a press is a better poor man's Norwalk.
