Guest guest
Marilyn, Just using the Vitamix by itself isn't going to take the weight off of you. I know how frustrating it is because I encounter the same problem. Do you exercise? I don't and that is changing as of now. Do you sleep good? I have a sleep problem and know that also messes up the ability to lose weight. Jo www.ladijocards.com www.remembervalentines.com/ladijo In a message dated 1/28/2011 7:35:10 A.M. Guest guest
My experience: cut out grains except for one cup of whole grains like steel-cut oatmeal per day. Cut out any sugar you may be using. Limit dairy, meats and fats strictly; add in a cup of beans per day to increase satiety. Have 90% of your diet coming from vegetarian sources, and limit the use of starchy vegetables. If you're hungry, eat more plain veggie soup with some beans or a cup of homemade applesauce. Once I really, really limited the amount of grains I was eating, I began to lose weight. That helped for the first 20 pounds. Now I'm at the point where I need more exercise to jump start things again. My two cents. Good luck, --ElissaP.S. This is essentially Fuhrnan's " Eat for Life " plan. Guest guest
There is a really good book titled, "Diet Wise" that tells you how to find hidden food allergies - they can cause you to keep weight on. Do you eat wheat? That was one of my hidden food allergies and I felt a HUGE difference in my energy levels (and dropped 5 lbs.) when I got off of it.Adrenal and Thyroid issues also interfere with a person's ability to loose weight. I've always been a pretty normal weight, but once I got on T3 meds my weight dropped another 5 lbs. And of course exercise is important, but with chronic fatigue issues just doing my Vitamix job is about all of the exercise I can tolerate. I used to run 4 miles a day - that is one of the things I miss most about my "former" life. Guest guest
Hello Marilyn,I cannot more highly recommend the book, "Stop The Thyroid Madness" to you (can be purchased at the website by the same name)TSH is a useless indicator of your thyroid's health and I'll bet the doctor did not request all of these tests when he ordered the thyroid panel: Free T3, a T3, and RT3 - those were the critical labs for me - my TSH was "normal" (which means squat really). My RT3 to T3 ratios were off which means that Synthroid (a T4 only med) would have made my situation WORSE! Many poor souls are treated by the TSH alone and given meds like Synthroid which is a storage hormone when what your body really needs is T3 (the active hormone). In my case my T3 receptors were blocked with too much RT3 so taking T3 alone will help clear them out. T4 would be converted into more RT3 which I am trying to get rid of. Had I seen a regular endocrinologist he would have given me nothing because of my "normal" TSH and if I talked him into giving me something, he probably would have RXed Synthroid. Aaaargh! It took me 2 years to work out everything explained in that book and to apply it to my case, but now I am feeling better than ever.I can go over your labs with you if you want to call me on the phone - I am happy to share what I've learned in the hopes that I can cut down on the time others have to spend on figuring this all out...Blessings,Lea Ann SavageSatellite Beach, FL(321) 773-7088 (home)(321-961-9219 (cell)))><'>www.VitamixLady.comwww..com<))>< On Jan 28, 2011, at 11:14 AM, javachic wrote: Lea Ann, It's funny you mentioned thyroid. Guest guest
Hi Marilyn,You may have lost inches. Are your clothes looser?I do not lose weight on smoothies in the morning, may be the banana's or dates.... I lost 47 pounds on the Carbohydrate Addicts Diet. You can Google it if you are interested, but like anything, many explanations are wrong....Basically it is 1 or 2 meals of protein & low carb (not starchy) veggie, then for dinner, equal portions of protein, veggie & carb (including dessert) Dinner must be eaten within a 60 minute period, because insulin is released after 75 minutes or so.You trick your body into releasing less insulin for the 1st 2 meals & the inches disappear, as do your cravings & hunger. Guest guest
umm... *ahem*.... *cough*... Is this thing on? This is normally mild mannered Dow signing in as " Dr. Dow " now.. As I step onto my soapbox, please allow the persona to wash over you for a moment, basking in its profundity. (I'll wait until the vomiting stops....) TSH is not as useless as you might think.. TSH comes from the pituitary gland and is a signal to the thyroid to create its little cocktail. If you have an abundance of TSH and low T3/T4, typically (not always) this is a sign of thyroid weakness. If could also be a sign of other things, and a lazy doctor will just stop here and put a patient on synthroid. If TSH is low and T3/T4 is high, then you start to look at the reasons why the thyroid is overproducing.. There are numerous reasons for this, ranging from tumors to nutritional deficiencies. A lazy doctor will stop here and write a prescription.. (Do you start seeing a pattern here?) If TSH is low and T3/T4 is low, this is often a sign of a pituitary problem. Usually doctors don't get TOO lazy here, but it happens. This can also be nutritional in nature but bears investigation. The problem here is the physician in many cases.. Now, I'm a chiropractor, so I don't prescribe (and don't want to!), but I certainly propone that someone who goes to a general practitioner and has a T3/T4/TSH imbalance goes directly to an endocrinologist rather than letting the GP do the medicking... Ok -- you've all basked enough... I'm stepping off the soap box. We now return to our regularly scheduled program, already in progress. - Dow, D.C. > > > >> > >> I am so frustrated and I hope my friends here can help. Guest guest
For what its worth, this is how I took off my 75 pounds in about 8 months. This is before my Vita-mix even. It was hard but the biggest thing was to be focused and committed. It paid off well. Pounds have stayed off for 2 1/2 years now. The Viti-mix comes in play to maintain my weight with healthy smoothies and such. I feel great... As for the eating part, I went from 2 plate fulls of food to 1 plate with serving size portions weighed or measured out. I now only eat red meat once a week. We going out to eat at the most twice a month. It makes it more of a treat and is more enjoyable although we still watch what we eat there. The only time I go to Mcs or s is if I want a brewed ice tea. I eat 6 times a day. Breakfast, healthy snack,Lunch, healthy snack, Dinner and end with another healthy snack. No eating for me after 8:00 pm. I logged everything I eat and all exercise and activities done. I use a program call CalorieKing Nutrition to do this because it track off all calories eaten along with other nutrition information and also calories burned from exercise. Exercise is very important. I bought a pedometer and use it daily. I started out walking 10,000 steps a day at 3 mph and at least 6 days a week. After a month of just walking I mixed it up a bit with walking at 4 mph and jogging at 5 mph and between 4 1/2 to 6 1/2 miles a day. Sleep is just as important. You need at least 7-8 hours of sleep. Your body burns calories as you sleep. Couple books I used to check food nutrition: The Calorie King Calorie Fat & Carbohydrates Counter The Biggest Loser Complete Calorie Counter Here is an awesome audiobook that really inspired me with my weight loss. You on a Diet The Owners Manual for waist management -by F. Roizen, M.D. Just keep at it and the weight will come off. Hope this helps. -JB From: javachic <javachic1967@...>Subject: Re: Need to lose weight any suggestions? Guest guest
Okay, kindly step down, , and let me have take your place on the soap box. As someone who damned near died from the incompetence of doctors misdiagnosing my thyroid condition, I feel qualified to step up. MANY doctors will base their diagnoses (or lack thereof) of a thyroid condition on TSH results alone. They often will not bother to check further to even see if a visit to an endocrinologist is warranted. If you are referred to an endo, chances are VERY good that the endo will also blow off "questionable" results and prescribe a standard thyroid medication such as synthroid or levoxyl, which are both synthetic hormones and are not sufficient to treat T3 issues, and often make matters even worse. Many people cannot process synthetic hormones, myself included, but the medical profession is VERY reluctant to prescribe T3, T4, combo, or natural thyroid medications. I have seen the "top" endrocrinologists in two countries, and had the same results with all 8 of them (yes, that's 8, at 8 major university hospitals) It was only after I went into a myexedema coma that they finally realized that my situation was critical. It was only at MY insistence that I was finally put on armour thyroid, which while flawed, is still better than a synthetic. The real problem here is that docs are taught to push pills, not look for the underlying causes. Just like Lea Ann, I learned the truth about my condition through a book-not a doctor, and was able to treat it myself using methods most doctors, including endocrinologiests, poo-poo. Sad truth is, the docs nearly killed me, and I had to become my own doctor in order to save my life. Like Lea Ann, I am more than happy to help anyone try to get on a good course to thyroid recovery-probably the most misdiagnosed and COMMON ailment going. Thyroid/adrenal issues are responsible for way more things than people realize, and a simple synthetic pill is not going to fix that! Guest guest
It's all confusing because I was first diagnosed after my first child was born 18 yrs ago by an endocrinologist. And the doctor that ordered my recent blood test is a Endocrinologist. I thought someone who knew better..To bad I didn't know enough at my appointment to walk in there asking for certain tests. I see now why a patient really needs to know what to ask for.. I never considered it before but obviously looking at my test results I see that only the bare minimum was ordered. And since I didn't ask for more - the doctor didn't volunteer more. I am so glad to have found my way to this site. I would of gone another 18 yrs never thinking twice about this side of my health. Guest guest
I to have taken a weight challenge to be less of myself by the end of April. My VM is very much a part of how I am tackling this challenge. One other tool I am using is a website called Sparkpeople.com. It allows you to track what you eat, your exercise, and how you fell. I am not sure if there is a VM group there because I never thought to look but there might be or you could create one. My goal is to get under 30% body fat by the end of April. Of course I would not mind being even less of me which means really amping up my rowing and playing Golf. Guest guest
GET THE BOOK (Stop The Thyroid Madness) Join the recommended by the STTM website - it IS overwhelming at first - just read the book, take one issue at a time and research it on the Internet and keep plugging away, OR consider seeing Dr. Holtorf in CA (I almost gave up on trying to figure it out on my own and was about to go see him) he knows all about these issues. You would fly out to see him once a year - all follow ups are done over the phone.I would be happy to help you out. I am just getting ready to do my labs all over again (my initial set of labs is now pushing 2 years old) and I can tell you what labs I'm doing.Give me a call. Guest guest
Yes, I lost close to 60lbs, reversed my diabetes and so on. I started with the south beach diet, which gave me a good education and helped me get away from my bad cravings. I also lost a lot of weight. Exercising (walking) two hours after every meal also did a lot, and I increased my walk gradually. The weight came of pretty good once, I started that. Since that time (5yrs ago for the diet) I have maintained my weight. Also I have changed to a vegetarian for health reasons. (Cholesterol, weight, in my opinion red meat causes a host of health problems) Now, some people won't agree with that and that's ok too, we all have our own opinions. You have to find what works for you. There is a glycemic index and a glycemic load. I favor the glycemic load as it is a truer calculation as to how the blood sugar is effected. Some things are now allowed that weren't before because the the glycemic load being smaller due to the fiber content of the food. You can find charts for both glycemic index and load on the Internet. You can also purchase books concerning this. The only fat I really eat is olive oil and flax seeds and not a lot of that. You need some fat but, not a lot. You need protein but, not a lot, not near the amount people eat today. There are both plant and animal sources for protein so, take your pick.lol Do what you can handle and learn, learn, learn. The vitamix will be a great tool for you. Do eat whole grains but not a lot. Don't eat a lot of anything anymore but, that is because I am only 5 foot tall and weight 105 lbs. Can't fit a lot in without a lot of weight gain so, what I do eat is now extremely healthy foods. Nuts I eat too and south beach taught me to eat only a few every day because they are extremely good for you but, they have a lot of calories. What I am saying here is you can eat the best food in the world but if you don't watch your portions you still will gain weight and any weight you gain can be taken off by a nice calming, relaxing walk. In the winter, my daughter, bought me tapes, walking to the miles cause she didn't want me slipping and sliding .lol They are more intensive than my walks but, she is right so, I do it indoors right now. Right now, I'm working with a future son-in-law just diagnosed with diabetes. His doctor is already happy with the new blood sugar readings. -- Need to lose weight any suggestions? I am so frustrated and I hope my friends here can help. I need to lose 30 pounds and for 2 weeks now have made green smoothies and soups. Guest guest
Marilyn- Keep in mind that for some people at least when you make sudden changes like this it can " shock " your system. It thinks food is being with held and hangs onto every calorie but it is short term usually. Once it realizes the changes are good and it is getting the nutrients and such it relaxes and stops hording the calories. I know the last time I " dieted " I found I would go through cycles almost. Once it got going, I would lose a bit, then it would stall a bit then I would lose some more and so on. Not sure how long you have been at it, or how drastic your changes were, but without the increase in exercise you have to almost starve yourself to lose any weight. If you are taking in more calories it does not matter if they are " better " calories, than you are burning, you will not lose. There is no way around that.
