I'm not a Splenda fan (I hate the stuff) but it's a good idea that I'd sweeten differently. I'd also use skim milk ice cubes (cubes work better in the Vitamix than crushed ice if you're looking for a thick result). Thanks for sharing!

Orange un-Julius

Hi there,

The other day I bought a 5-pound box of Satsuma Mandarins. They are

super-easy to peel. Each morning I peel up two, break them apart,

and drop them into my Vitamix along with crushed ice, a packet of

Splenda, and a couple of drops of vanilla extract. The blended mix

tastes just like an Orange Julius!

No, OJ isn't as acidic as lemon juice. In fact, Orange Juliuses were blended with some sort of powdered milk base. I used to really like them--too bad they're gone. In retrospect, they were kind of a mainstream precursor to smoothies.

FYI, Dairy Queen (DQ) bought Orange Julius. You can still get

them at a DQ

I am also not a fan of artificial sweeteners. I would use honey or agave nectar, or just enjoy the natural sweetness of the fruit. Sounds yummy, otherwise! Thanks for posting. From: <kareningotham@...>Subject: Re: Orange un-Julius Date: Wednesday, January 19, 2011, 4:34 PM

Why would you want to? A commercial orange julius is loaded with artificial ingredients, and a lovely fresh one can be made in the Vitamix. From: <kareningotham@...>Subject: RE: Orange un-Julius Date: Wednesday, January 19, 2011, 5:34 PM

I can't. We don't have DQ in NYC.

Because I like them. :)

However, a little research since this thread started disclosed a good recipe (purported to be "the original") source so I can just whip them up with no guilt (not that I let these things bother me all that much--it's all about the taste for me).

Jersey City isn't on my list of must-visit hot spots, especially given the fact that I'd have to pay to get there. And according to the Orange Julius "find a store near you" service, the nearest location to my ZIP Code that vends Orange Juliuses is a place that's not even open yet, also somewhere "over the river" as my adviser so euphemistically puts it. Given all that, I think I can continue to survive without them.

Good enough reason! Oh, how I miss the days... My allergies keep me from having them even with the good stuff, lol

Just the fruit would be my first choice, but if I felt the need for additional sweetener, I would personally go with raw agave or honey. I grow stevia, but I don't use it myself very often. Agave is usually my "go-to" sweetener.

Nice! I just remembered that I used to make an alcoholic drink with coconut milk, orange juice, and can't remember what else, but I would think coconut milk as a sub in a non alcoholic version would be delish!

, I know that you drink milk--are you allergic to oranges? By the way,

totally OT, but how long does it take you to milk your cow every day and how

much milk do you get? It sounds like a lot of hard work except that you can

make butter in your Vitamix, not churn it by hand, thank God! I watched the

butter video and yes it was weird to see the guy " tamping " down cream!

I recently made a blog post about making an Orange Julius in my Vitamix. Here's

the original post:

http://berlinswhimsy.typepad.com/berlins_whimsy/2010/12/orange-julius.html

Here's the recipe:

Orange Julius

•2 large oranges, peeled

•1 C. prepared Orange Juice (or fresh squeezed---even better)!

•1/2 C. simple syrup/or agave (to taste)

•2 tsp. powdered milk

•a handful of ice

Blend it all up and enjoy! Serves 2.

Terry--- I cut the peel and the pith off. Depending on how thick or thin you

want the consistency of the drink to be, add more orange juice to whole oranges.

I like the consistency of the recipe but one of my kids' friends thought it was

too " pulpy. " -Amber
