I do drink lovely milk, and tons of it! I have no idea how long it takes me to milk my cows, since I pay a man to do it for me, lol. When I first got them, I was terrified of them and really had no clue which end was which. Not wanting to not understand, I learned HOW to do it, but decided that 5 AM and 5PM every day was NOT good timing for me! I do milk them now and then, but not on a regular basis...I have a TRUE "milk man", lol. My daily milk amount is based on whether my cows are calving, in which case I have about 2 gallons a week, as hungry calves tend to take all mama cow can provide. As the cows naturally ween, I am often overrun with milk-thats when I make a lot of cheese to freeze for the off times. As for oranges, I used to be highly allergic to citrus, and this was discovered when I lived in the middle of a

40 acre orange grove! Talk about a tough one to avoid! I am probably clear of the allergy now, but I have learned not to tempt fate with going back to things that have formerly caused me to quit breathing-an activity that I am rather fond of! Y'know, I ran across Miniature Jerseys online! The perfect size with perfect milk output for a couple of families to share. SO cute, too.

I would LOVE to have miniature Jerseys! Jerseys make a super rich, thick, sweet milk. I knew NOTHING about cows when I was desperate for raw milk, and bought the first 4 legged creatures I came across when the opportunity presented itself (THAT is a story all on its own) Now that I am more knowledgeable about critters that provide milk for food, I would certainly entertain the idea of getting some minis and keeping them right here in my yard (the town board would love that-had to fight them to let me keep a couple of chickens!) (another fun story)

They're ADORABLE and sweet, even the bulls. You can get pure Jerseys or various levels of cross-breds. They keep very strict records of what is bred to what; it seems that the cross-breeding exists to put some new genes in the pool. Once you get beyond 15/16 or so, you're dealing with a Jersey that's for all intents and purposes pure. And of course, there's that wonderful milk, although I understand that Guernsey milk is pretty good, too. Must be a Channel Island thing.

Here's the recipe:

Orange Julius

•2 large oranges, peeled

•1 C. prepared Orange Juice (or fresh squeezed---even better)!

•1/2 C. simple syrup/or agave (to taste)

•2 tsp. powdered milk

•a handful of ice

Blend it all up and enjoy! Serves 2.

The pith is going to make for a result that's more bitter and healthful (lots of bioflavanoids).

Don't use the peel. You can, of course, zest the orange part and freeze it for future use but the peel in its entirety is really inedible.

Terry--- I cut the peel and the pith off. Depending on how thick or thin you want the consistency of the drink to be, add more orange juice to whole oranges. I like the consistency of the recipe but one of my kids' friends thought it was too "pulpy." -Amber
