The dry blade/container is only for grinding flour and kneading dough--nuts are for the wet containers.

almonds or nuts

I thought nuts had to be blended in the special dry blade container.

Thanks, do they need to be soaked?

NO! Not unless you're making some sort of rice paté. Nut butters require dry nuts.

Nope - nuts aren't as hard as grains of wheat or other hard grains. Nut butters and nuts can be made in the "regular" container! :-)

Do you use raw or roasted nuts to make nut butters? Our local health food store makes their own peanut butter and they only use roasted nuts - something to do with the oils in the nuts being better for butter when they are roasted.

I'd say definitely for peanuts but you can go either way for almonds, cashews, and whatever. Don't forget that even though they're oily, peanuts aren't actually nuts and they're much more appropriate for butter when they've been roasted (the raw nuts are delicious sprouted, though).

Also, nuts are easier to blend into butter if they're warmer rather than cooler. Room temperature or a bit warmer works well, and they should be very dry.

I've used "natural" (unroasted) almonds, but it tastes much better with roasted!

That's very advanced! Almond Butter is much stiffer and more difficult to make than peanut butter. Good for her!

Whole Flax Seeds - YesWhole Wheat Berry Seeds - What are you trying to accomplish? Are you talking about sprouted wheat berries? Dry Wheat Berries produce whole wheat flour - you "could" put them in a smoothie, but you could also add flour to a smoothie and that doesn't seem very appetizing to me. People do add Oats to smoothies, so I guess you could also add wheat berries. However, flax seeds won't damage your container - wheat berries are harder and although they could be blended into a flour in your wet container, they will scratch the plastic.

I put flax seeds in my green smoothie but I add them to the water (along with chia seeds and some other supplements) and blend them on high before adding the greens and fruit. Flax seeds need to be ground before our bodies can use them as they are so small and can pass easily through our digestive tracts undigested meaning we don't get the full nutritional benefit of them (http://www.goldenflax.com/flaxseed-faq.html#grind; http://www.healthyflax.com/flax-faq/)

Niki,

That makes sense about the flax seeds, I love to eat them like they were candy.

I'm glad that you aren't close to the flooding.

The only way to get the true nutritional benefit from flax seed is to grind them. The beneficial oils are in the seeds, and they will pass through undigested if not ground up. Flax seeds make a perfect egg substitute if you are allergic or just happen to run out of eggs. I make flax meal by grinding the flax seeds in the vitamix, then storing it in the freezer to have on hand at all times. From: thomas long <tlong@...>Subject: Re: almonds or nuts Date: Wednesday, January 12, 2011, 3:59 PM
