Guest guest
Jamey, Many good ideas to work with. Eliminating food allergies may reduce intraocular pressure. Vit C 10-35 grams has been reported to reduce intraocular pressure. Magnesium aspartate hydrochloride 250mg per day showed improvement in visual field defects. Fish oil… Ginko biloba 40mg 3 x/day for 4 wks reduced preexisting visual field damage in a double blind trial. His eye doc will be recommending some type of drops. Any info would be very appreciated. Thanks, Jamey Dyson Salem
Guest guest
Jamey: You may hear from someone who has had success treating their glaucoma with alternative therapies; however, my father (age 90) and his twin brother have battled glaucoma for about 50 years now and have tried all kinds of alternative approaches along the way with little success. My mother is a health nut and buys every book that comes out on alternative therapies, including those for glaucoma. However, the only things that have kept the pressure down for my father and uncle--as well as many of my other patients who suffer with glaucoma--have been conventional medical treatment: drops, laser surgery, and surgical construction of a bleb should drops fail to achieve adequate results. Glaucoma is the leading cause of blindness in this country and nothing to mess around with. It should be treated early with the latest medical approaches to preserve one's sight. Lyndon McGill, D.C. Guest guest
Jamey, It is not our job to use scare tactics if a patient has done some homework and wishes to try alternative therapies that have had good success in controlled trials. I do not disagree that this can be a significant disease, but as a chiropractor I do believe in what we do. Noninvasive treatment first. Multiple MDs are also using this treatment first. Do make sure this is a primary, simple glaucoma. Dr McGill, I do not wish to start a macho contest and do not mean any disrespect. Guest guest
My thinking would be that no matter what the patient decides they would have to have the MD on board to closely monitor the pressures. This is a scarey situation – blindness is scarey- and takes careful attention to all details. s. fuchs dc From: [mailto: ] On Behalf Of Kehr Sent: Tuesday, July 17, 2007 9:35 AM Subject: RE: Glaucoma treatments Jamey, It is not our job to use scare tactics if a patient has done some homework and wishes to try alternative therapies that have had good success in controlled trials. Guest guest
Thanks to all who gave their recommendations regarding alternative glaucoma treatments, as this is far outside of my practice focus. I will pass this info on to my patient and will recommend that he follow his MD's advice while possibly trying some of these alternatives.
