Guest guest
Greetings Friends,This morning in the Big O, the Governor listed legislative priorities for the coming session, ranking health care just behind education, among others. His priorities were for chronic disease treatment and prevention. This is a golden opportunity for us to start defining the terms of the "Wellness Revolution" around Chiropractic. The January 25 "Chiropractic Day at the Capitol" should be on the calendar of every chiropractor planning on being around for awhile.Granted, we are not professionally united in this regard, but there are pockets of travelers who have started to put handles on these concepts so they may be more easily picked up. We can use these early drafts as sounding boards and catalysts for consultation. We have an enormous wind at our backs. We are the leading alternative health care system in the nation, in terms of use and in philosophical identification with the body as a natural source of healing. The inspiration which has defined innate intelligence is consistent with the seamlessness of phenomenological reality itself, and perhaps God's Will as well. In our age we are learning how important it is to tend to our planet's ecological health, so also are Americans beginning to see the need to tend to their own personal needs. This is one view of the Wellness Revolution.Strategies which capture the national/human imagination, which are accessible and reliable will be successful. Such strategies will be natural and self-evidently assist Nature's impulse toward health. They'll be wholly consistent with Chiropractic, in practice and in the public's eye. They will be so basic and universal that they cannot be co-opted. We have "innate" for historical credibility, but would probably make it easier with "self-healing" thematically.I have a personal history with injury and yoga as rehabilitation. As circumstances would have it, I was introduced to the resting postures of Rama Berch, founder of Master Yoga Institute, now in La Jolla, CA. I've condensed a routine from these postures which are effective for relieving spinal and skeletal muscle pain and are easily accessible, even able to be done in bed. Coupled with the practical experience of controlling one's own breath to enhance one's self-healing capacities in predictable and self-evident ways, the routine has been a powerful remedy for many people. My first public classes in this style of yoga began just after 9/11/01. I've taught weekly classes since then.My personal experience encourages me that much can be gained by instructing patients in the simple mechanics of proper breathing. These are powerful influences which bring forth parasympathetic effects and should be commonly taught. An active care regimen that is "chiropractically certified" would bring yoga in America an institutional backing it needs, and bring it under our umbrella as well. The benefits to patients would provide the foundation of wellness. People will always need passive care; all of us do. But teaching what we can do for ourself will increasingly become an important part of health care. Sears, DCwww.docbones.comNW PDX
Guest guest
The theme of our "Chiropractic Day at the Capitol" should be wellness. WSCC, CAO., ODOC., and the OBCE are all invited to come and have informational booths. All have inticated they are coming..though the CAO and ODOC need to pound out a few details....WSCC officials are very excited about coming so... It is my hope that we can have interns and doctors providing some clinical "wellness" type testing. BPs., bone mineral density testing., finger prick cholesterol and other testing. I have a several page wellness type computerized questionairre that patients fill out and we run through Mike Censsna's DC., (chiropractic internal disorders) software which spits out a report. Postural and spinal checks? view box for legislators & legislative staff to bring X-rays for lic. docs to view and discuss with them?.....how about the lazer anti-oxidant testing unit that some colleagues have?, Dean indicated he could bring his infrared imaging unit, etc., etc I could use some help from colleagues in the field, and at the school etc., to contact vendors with some of these units in hopes they will donate their use..... Any suggestions or thoughts out there on how we can make this coming "Chiropractic Day at the Capitol" the best ever would be of great help...time is running out.
