There has been a lot of discussion on here lately about how others

are handling (or failing to handle) their weight issues. Some of the

comments have been caring ( " I want to help " kinds of things), but

some are moving over into the critical stage, and I feel I have to

speak up at this point.

You never, ever, know what is going on with a person. You just can't

know. No matter how well you know them, their inner deamons are

personal, and buried so deaply they often don't know there are there

themselves. We have all been there, I know, but as we progress with

our own personal successes, we tend to foget.

Critisism of these people will not help them find a better way to

live. Telling them about the program often will only be seen as

someone, yet again, telling them they are fat and lazy. The best way

to reach those that are in desparate need is to be a friend, to be

understanding of their limitations, even if they are for the moment

self imposed. The woman drinking grape soda and talking about

stomach stapeling might need someone to talk to more than she needs

to lift weights right now. The woman who walks her dog for exersise

is getting more exersise than most Americans, and is seeing health

benefits, maybe not the outstanding body transformations that we all

want, but benefits nonetheless. She needs encouragement and a guide

to help her find ways to challenge herself.

I know that no one said anything with the intent of being cruel, and

in fact none of the posts were all that unkind, but I have seen too

many of these discussions deteriorate. We look at this list as our

private livingroom conversations, but new people are joining every

day. Perhaps one of them has come here desperate for help, and the

first thing she reads is " what she eats discusts me. " How will she

feel?

Without sounding overly P.C. I'd like to ask that we all think about

the people reading our posts before we send it to the board. She who

has the most to loose needs our help more than those of us that have

already found a way to approach our fitness goals, don't you think?

Right On Alys, AS PER USUAL,,,,

Folks that know me from the old days know that I often beat the SAME

drum as Alys here does.

Weight issues (in my NOT so humble opinion) are, for a HUGE

percentage of the overweight population, about emotions rather than

laziness, ineptness, or just plain not caring on the part of the

overweight person.

To approach the eating and exercise part first is often to

be " putting the cart before the horse " for a lot of people,,,,

As Alys said,,, " FIRST you have to deal with the 'inner demons' " .

So, any newbies? Take heart,,,,you aren't alone,,,

I start by apologizing, I never in any way would want to turn away a

new person trying to better themselves or say anything that would

hurt anyone, never my intent. I come from a family of large people

and myself has always had to deal with being the " larger " one of the

group, I know how it feels. I also know that I have been nothing

short of a friend to my co worker and have never discouraged her in

any way about what she is doing and how she is doing it, I just give

my opinion (not that it is all the great).

So if I have offended anyone or upset anyone, please accept my

apology and I definitely will watch what I say in the future.:-)

Thanks guys.

I agree with the essence of what Alys and said- most of us here

never intend to hurt anyone with our comments. But one reason I

joined this board a year ago was that my friends and family were

getting a little sick of me talking about BFL and my success. I am

really, really proud of what I have done and in most areas of society

it is not acceptable to run around saying " Hey, look at me, I RULE! "

On this board it is!!! I AM rather smug deep down inside!! While I

try to only compare myself with myself, do you know how it feels to

walk into your office and know that beyond a shadow of a doubt you

are the HEALTHIEST person there??? I EARNED a little bit of smugness!!

In my family too, I am pretty much the only one who is not overweight

and it make me furious when someone thinks someone else is a lesser

person because he or she is heavy. However, that does not mean that

I don't get frustrated with my coworkers who say they want to get in

shape and then eat fried food and chips every single day. Or my boss

who has all sorts of health problems and wants to keep complaining

about them but won't do one thing to remedy the situation. I'm not

going to express my frustration to them, but I expect to be able to

come here and express it to all of YOU who are doing something about

your health!! While we want to attract new memebers and be a

positive support group, we also want this to be a place we can talk

HONESTLY. I don't remember what the coworker was eating, but if I

saw someone eating a twinkie, chips, and grape soda, I can honestly

say " What she eats disgusts me " . That is making no comment on who

she is or the person she is. I don't mean to be hurtful or turn

anyone away, but I'm not going to mince my words either.

Point very well made. My family and friends are also very sick of

hearing about it, I was accused (in a nice way of course) by my

sister yesterday of being a walking informercial, I don't take that

as an insult but I know they all get tired of hearing about it.

Coming from a family of large people I am the one who is given a hard

time and I am considered the lesser person because I care about

myself and my body, I have been told at several family picnics that I

am WAY too thin and that I am going to die from anorexia if I am not

careful. That is not a nice feeling nor do I enjoy being around them

because of it, I pretty much stay away because of the hard time I am

given.

So in short, I do agree with Lynda but I will be more careful to

watch what I say about others, I would never intentionally turn

someone away.

First off, I let my frustration about this situation get a little out

of hand and I apologize for that. The only reason that I have such

strong feelings is because I actually think this lady is a great

person and just wish I knew how to approach her about her health

issues. But I am NOT sorry that is said that her food disgusts me.

I get it EVERY single day from people who actually tell me to my

face. 2 days ago a coworker said that I am too obsessive about food

and just fell short of saying that I have an eating disorder. And I

probably do. About 3 years ago I would starve, binge, starve,

binge. Now I actually take care of myself and if thats obsessive

then fine. And I do want to say that America has a real problem with

allowing people to pass the blame to someone else. Blame parents,

blame society, blame anyone else but yourself. I blame myself - I'm

fat because I didn't take care of myself. Its my fault that I fell

into the trap of super skinny models not society's fault. Yes, I

came from an abusive, alcoholic family and lived off food stamps and

was a carnie child who went to 15 plus schools as a child. But you

know what? WHO CARES? Thats not a reason to slowly kill yourself.

So everyone has emotional issues. But part of being alive is

learning to deal with those issues in a healthy manner. And maybe I

am harsh but I say that people need to buck up and take responsiblity

for their actions. And this is just me being honest and I am not

going to apologize for that.

I agree as well with what is being said here. I had a coworker once

tho whose lunch every day consisted of a slim jim(one of those meat

thingys), a package of Grandma's chocolate fudge cookies, a Dr.

Pepper, and a cigarette. Problem is, this was one of the most

curvaceous girls I'd ever seen. I'm sure by now her age has caught up

with her and she cannot eat like that.

When I was a teenager I could never bring my dates in the house when

they brought me home because my father always sat up and waited for

me and ate sardines. The whole house smelled fishy so I always said

goodnight at the door.

Stasia

It is true that what we BFLers eat disgust people. My family rolls

their eyes at most of my food choices. Someone asked me once " what do

you eat to stay so in shape? " The answer is what I don't eat.

And for the people that are NEW here - Every single one of us was in

your shoes when we started - overweight, bad diets, unhappy and

looking for answers/help. This is the best, most successful plan I

have ever seen/done.

You eat according to the plan - you WILL lose weight. You exercise

according to the plan (or any where close to the plan for that

matter) you will get health benefits - Put them together and give it

12 weeks and you will see where all the established members are

coming from - and don't be ashamed/shy about the accomplishment no

matter how big/small when you get to where we are.

I too can totally agree with all of you that have responded to the

orginal post -

I am the " small " one (now anyway) in a family and extended family of

overweight people. I hear the same old story - you are too obsessive -

you work out too much - do you have anorexia/bulimia etc - get a

life - etc etc etc.

I also agree that watching them (and most other people) eat is

disgusting. It makes me grateful that God gave the brains to keep

looking until I found a plan that worked, helped me put an end to my

excessive drinking, and has had a positive impact on others. What

makes us all different is that we all " get it " , to take the words

from Dr. Phil McGraw. And as he also points out in his book - NEVER

be ashamed that you do get it while others do not. It is each persons

responsibility to manage/improve their own life.

Ohhhh,,Not at all !!!

Not to be a " fence sitter " or anything,,but I can understand your

frustrations with the co-worker TOO!!! And sometimes,,,ya JUST GOTTA

RANT!!!!, I mean I KNOW there ARE those who eat like crap,,and really

DON'T care about their own health or how they look!

(but maybe WITH a caveat for potential scared newbies?,,,I don't

know,,,,I guess this is a case of " can't please all the people,,etc).

I mean,,you are probably, as a former larger person, thinking

something like " jeez, if *I* can do it....etc " , so I can totally

understand your frustration with someone who is right there at your

job pigging out,,while YOU are trying your best to stay with the

program and " be good " .

Neither Alys nor I meant to " scold " anyone, more like a bit of

information.

Since you were a former larger person, you of all people understand

EXACTLY what we mean by the emotional aspects of this whole " weight

loss biz " .

Anyway,,your post didn't sound over the top,,or too " offensive " , I

think Alys was meaning in more of a " just in case " way, as in just in

case a scared newbie is lurking.

OH Yeah,,you gotta LOVE the way people automatically whip out the " A "

word (anorexic) the SECOND they see one of " their " group getting fit

and slim.

Next time someone says that to you??? Translate it in your head to

what they are REALLY thinking..........which is:

" Oh my GOD, I'm SO OOOOOO OSOOOO jealous,,,I WANNA be getting all fit

and slim TOOoooOOOO (whine whine),,but I don't have the discipline to

Anorexic,,,yeah,,,yeah THAT'S the ticket,,,,I'll make MYSELF feel

better by pretending SHE'S the one with the problem " !!!

Okay,,THAT being said,,,I realize that anorexia IS in fact a real and

serious disease,,,and I DO feel for those struggling with it,,,,,for

their battle is just the flip side of ours, it's an emotional illness.

HowEVER, when coworkers, friends and family show their " concern " for

a suddenly healthy and gorgeous friend, by worrying about them

being " anorexic " it's JEALOUSY!! (little musical notes,,,,held).

You sound like you've got your head together and are doing things

I too can so relate to this thread because 1)Everyone in my family is

overweight and 2) there is a friend I care about who is having health

issues in relation to her weight. My family and this friend have seen

me go from size 14 to size 6 and I have mentioned the BFL book. I had

looked forward to having my friend or some of my family members

asking me for more information and hoped to inspire them to try it

but instead it seems like my weightloss is a threat to them. No one

even mentions it so I don't want to talk about it because then people

perceive you as being a " weirdo " and start saying things like " You're

obsessing about BFL " . But no, we're not obsessing we're enthusiastic.

Unfortunately it seems that you can lead a horse to water but you

can't make him drink (Dorothy had a profane version of this

one but you'll have to email me to find out that version - or read

Dorothy .)I would so love coaching my friend through BFL but at

this point but I don't feel like I can do anything more without

risking offending her. Anyone been in this situation and have advice?

I too have a friend who is very over weight. She has asthma and other

health issues that would be helped by getting some of the extra

weight off.

I don't try to get her to do anything about her weight. Her family

has been very hard on her about the weight issue, enough so that it

is a big emotional thing between them. I don't want to add to that

pain. I have told her what it is that I'm doing, if she tells me she

is trying something to loose weight I give her all the encouragement

I can, and I try be sure to invite her to do things that she would

enjoy, and be able to do, like swimming.

I think that you have to be open enough for them to come to you when

they are ready, but in the mean time love them for who they are, as

they are.

My turn...

Ever since I've made the decision to do BFL early last year, all I

got from my office (aside of the few that were doing BFL, too--and we

didn't know each other was) were snide comments and remarks. People

would come into the office with those Banana Nut loaf things and a

bottle of Dr. Pepper, or a Burger King breakfast combo (I used to

LOVE those) and wave it in front of me, saying " Body for Life! " and

it just about disgusted me. I started playing along and inquiring

(anyone who knows me knows I'm outspoken sometimes) about the carbs

and proteins, and explaining in no uncertain terms why I'm doing what

I'm doing and what path their eating habits are leading them on. (I

can do that where I work--we are a pretty close-knit family, and no

one takes offense to what anyone says, usually).

Anyhow, 7 months later (had to do the program sporadically through

the summer due to so much travel; am on week 3 now of Challenge 2), I

am 20 pounds lighter, have 6% less bodyfat, and score almost

perfectly on my Army Physical Fitness Test (12 points away, versus

115 points away last September). Now, they are giving BFL a new

look, some are even trying it, others are just accepting it, and most

have complimented my results. They have stopped waving unauthorized

foods in front of me and have even denied me a cookie when I ask!

(Imagine that!)

so, I don't know where I was going with this, but I just thought I'd

throw in my $.02 as well. :-)

No, since I've been doing the PeakPhysiques nutrition plan, my

portions are a little diff. I use about 1/3 cup CC and 1/4 cup

beans and a couple of teaspoons of salsa. But it would work with any

ratio! I heat the beans and salsa then stir in CC. It makes a

My thoughts...its hard (maybe even impossible) not to look at other's and

shudder with horror at the self abuse that we witness via overindulgence in

junk food. If we saw someone abusing a child or an animal, we would scream in

protest. Seeing people do the same thing to their own bodies makes us want to

SCREAM also but we don't because abusing one's self is acceptable in our

society. Yet we can all cry inside for the indiviidual because we have all

Thank you . I have always dealt with the same family members

saying similar things pretty much all my life, even after I had my

first daughter and lost SOME of the weight I had gained I was accused

then, and I was no where near where I am now. My one Aunt (thank God

for her) told them all one time that they needed to just shut up

because they were just jealous and wished they had my willpower, I

smiled rather large at that one.

Like I said earlier, I have just about completely cut out going to

that side of the familie's events, they don't understand why I don't

eat their food and I don't like dealing with the comments. Sounds

pretty wimpy huh?

It is sad though to see them because I just wish they would try, just

once, if they would give it a go I think they would be rather happy

with their results. All I can do is worry about myself and keeping

myself in line, God knows they aren't worrying about me.

Thanks again , you hit the nail on the head.

I am fairly new to BFL (in my 4th week). I know I feel alot better

mentally and physically. Most of my co-workers have seen me blow up

from 150 lbs to 225 lbs at my highest (now 196.5). And none of them

are that much overweight (maybe 10 lbs at most). So they bring in

the donuts etc, and are pretty good about not waving it in front of

me, they will let me know that there are there and leave it up to me

to make up my own mind.

Now I wish my husband would get on the BFL bandwagon. I try to eat

properly now and workout while he sits there and eats my fav

chocolate candy. Now that is rough...he needs to lose about 30 lbs

himself. I have found an online buddy in CA so we email and keep in

touch constantly. It is so rough to try to do this on your own

without support. I was a member of Weight Watchers and had lost upto

50 lbs at one time only to regain 25 of it back before starting BFL.

My husband comments on my reading every nutritional label, and for

not having a piece of bread with my dinner...LOL hey if it is

between a piece of dry bread and a baked potato...Im takin the tater

thank you very much!!!

I hope that eventually when the changes really start becoming

noticable that my husband will eventually start eating and working

out with me. It may take a couple challenges or it may never happen

at all...but the thing I have to remember is that I am doing this for

ME...he cant put that junk food in my mouth....I have control over

what goes in, and the results of what comes out.

I too talk about BFL with my co-workers (who are skeptical) because I

am excited to try it and I feel good so far. I am just waiting for

the fat to start dropping, I measure the same as I did when I started

except for losing 4.5 lbs, does it take awhile to see inches change

for someone who needs to lose about 50lbs?
