.....wonder of wonders, we now are informed that 'MEDICAL research' has

learned there can be 'malpositions' and postural related low back pain,

and DISC dis-orders brought on by sitting, of all things!!!

What a leap forward....

Hasn't the notion of the medico~insurance cabal long been that you can't

get hurt sitting at your desk?

I'd like to see what that study has to report on lumbosacral facetal

irritation and head/neck/shoulder problems resulting from leaning back

135 degrees....

and I wonder just how many new on-the-job claims can be avoided by

'getting up and walking around'....

.....if ONLY I'd learned of this somewhere....somehow.....my life would

have been so...oh, wait....what's this??? My old class

notes?....why....gee....

Doc,

This new study comes out of Scotland. I guess in Scotland it's easier to sit at 130 degrees while drinking that good single malt. After awhile, I'd begin to slouch as well!

They actually put this study on the national news on ABC i believe on Tues evening. My son looked at me and said "is that right dad?"

I told him not to ever believe what the news tell you without researching it further, and NO, i don't believe it is.

How irresponsible.

The results of this study are very interesting indeed! It justifies all those wonderful recliners out there, right? I think it is a perfect example of how research can be misleading. In our office, we have found the use of a seat wedge to be the most comfortable position to sit for long periods of time with the least amount of discomfort. Today, I measured the angle created between the torso and the thigh when sitting on the wedge and it was about 130-135 degrees. So I think they missed the boat big time on this one. I'd bet that if they tipped the seat bottom forward to create the same 135 degree angle as leaning back, they would find this takes the pressure off the discs about the same amount. I'll stick to sitting upright with a seat wedge... and leave the reclining to my hard-headed chronic pain patients who won't give up their recliners.

funny thing is, if people start to sit that way, it may be good for our

business....... not so great for our karma, however!!
