Guest guest
Dani ... you're talking to someone who was totally addicted to diet pills for almost 40 years. I took phen-fen also but had no idea what it could do. AND they didn't even help me! I started taking pills when I was in my 20's and they were amphetamines - when they were taken off the market I went nuts, but quickly found another doctor who prescribed the " next " magic pill. And so on and so on for the rest of my life .... Believe it or not, it was the Atkins diet that got me off them so no matter what anyone tells me, I will always be grateful for that. That was only about 2 1/2 years ago. I also was taking diuretics and was able to kick those, too. I know now that I will never take them again, but I can understand the wanting for them. Its a shame Carole won't listen to you, but then I didn't listen to anyone either. Now if I hear of anyone taking them I go nuts! BTW - someone I knew got in on the first suit and got $1 million and had NO physical problems. *sigh* Rita Phen-fen (Rita) Rita, Yes, my " second mom " is going to sue the makers of Phen-fen. I think it would be impossible not to know about the billion-dollar law suit. There are ads on TV every two minutes here asking past users of phen- fen to call the lawyer nearest them. I'm torn about the whole thing, though. Not to open a whole can of worms, but Carole knew that there were potential side-effects before she started taking the drug. She's obese, and she's chosen not to lose weight the healthy weight. She wanted the magic pill, and she begged her dr. to prescribe phen-fen, so he did. She lost about 50 pounds with it before it was taken off the market. Carole even admits that she would keep taking it if she could. She also admits that she doesn't really feel wronged, since she wanted the drug, but that she's suing because well, gee, everyone else is, might as well get in on a piece of the money pie. It seems really greedy to me. If you want a pill to solve your weight problems, you should deal with the consequences. I'm sure others will disagree, but that's how I feel. Another woman had to under-go a liver transplant. Guest guest
Oh, my god, Rita, I didn't realize that you had gone through such a terrible addiction. I know there were a lot of drugs on the market in the 70s and 80s that weren't researched properly. I remember a sleep-aid drug that caused sheer psychosis (the writer Roth took it and almost went completely mad). It's amazing that you were able to break free from the grip of legal drugs after so many years. I am truly inspired by your determination and optimism. Guest guest
Thank you for the info Geri. but believe me I know how lucky I was ... I will never take another diet pill again - never! And now with BFL I won't ever need it. Sheesh! I don't have to worry about killing my appetite these days - I need to GET one! lol Rita Re: Phen-fen (Rita) Talking about diet pills...in my country, 1 died after taking Slim 10 just for 3 months. Guest guest
Dani - Was that sleep-aid drug Halcion? (I took that, too!) Funny - I never considered myself a druggie until I wrote all this! lol I am proud of me, too, for kicking the habit ... it wasn't easy but I was determined for the first time in my life. I figured if I could do that - I could do anything! I'm going to prove that to myself with BFL. I'm not sure if I'll ever be a poster gal, but I'm going to look and feel the best I can! Guest guest
Yep a - that's what speed did for me! I was a whirlwind then! Good for your husband! I only lost weight at that level the first time I took it. The weird thing was after a while I got used to all those meds and they didn't really help all that much. But I was afraid to stop! Guest guest
I just added this to my list of movies to rent. Thanx. Re: Phen-fen (Rita) a, What you described reminds me of the movie " Requiem for a Dream " for which Ellen Burnstein won an a couple years back. She played an older woman addicted to speed which was prescribed to her as a diet aid. If you haven't seen it, go rent it. It's amazing. Guest guest
Wow, Rita and TeacherPL! What horrid experiences! Glad the diet pill thing is obsolete... wonder what people are taking now that will have the same effects. Guest guest
Oh believe me there are plenty of diet pills out there - but fen phen which was a combination of two pills is now illegal - at least one part of them is. I remember just before I went on Atkins - maybe a year or so before then - a new doctor offered me the NEWEST pill on the market - I think it is Meridian or something. I told him - I didn't come to you for a rx - I came to you for help in a nutrition plan. He's the one who suggested Atkins. And this guy was a cardiologist. Compared to how I am now, I wasn't even that heavy then. :-( Re: Phen-fen (Rita) In a message dated 6/21/2002 1:51:41 AM Eastern Standard Time, no_reply writes: > Oh, my god, Rita, I didn't realize that you had gone through such a > terrible addiction. Guest guest
I know of at least four doctors here in L.A. who will prescribe diet speed-type pills to girls who are of normal weight or even underweight. My friend, who's an aspiring actors, is 5'5 " and weighs 117; she just got a prescription for Meridia, an appetite suppresant. She can't sleep; she's always dizzy and high-strung. She doesn't want to eat. It's horrid. I'm begging her to get off these pills. That doctor should be in jail, I swear. Guest guest
There is a doctor in Memphis who does the same thing. I have gone to him myself and the last time I went he said something about my weight. But he gave them to me anyway. You pay first and then tell the nurse what kind you want and they put you in the room in groups. He then comes in and talks to you for a brief moment then signs the script and goes on. It is just a way for him to make money! And you can tell that he is on them too. Since I started BFL for the first time in my life I know I don't need diet pills. I can not get over how I am not hungry. There have been a couple of times I have wanted to munch down on some WOW chips I keep in a jar on the counter for my husband, but I didn't do it. Those pills are dangerous and not good for you and I took them knowing that anyway. BUT I won't take them ever again! Guest guest
Glad to hear it Noelle ... I must say for the most part the doctors I went to were highly recommended as either internists or cardiologists. One of them can be seen on tv regularly on the network news shows. His examination of me was very thorough (he's the one who gave me the fen phen) and I just found a 2 page report he did on me 8 years ago. I wish I weighed now what I weighed then lol Anyway ... all that being said, I repeat I am happy you have chosen the BFL way .... Guest guest
I'm only on my second week. Last Sunday was my first free day and we had a bar b que for fathers day. I ate everything. But, I used to eat them all the time and LOVE them. My husband loves the Doritos. They used to not last long at our house, but since I started BFL they are going a little further for him and his sandwich nights.:)LOL Noelle Re: > Phen-fen (Rita) > > > > > > > > > In a message dated 6/21/2002 1:51:41 AM > Eastern Standard > Time, > > > no_reply@y... writes: > > > > > > > > > > Oh, my god, Rita, I didn't realize that > you had gone > through > > such a > > > > terrible addiction. Guest guest
I used to eat them everyday too. When I was at my unhealthy thin stage I would eat a half a bag of WOW chips a day, THAT WAS IT. I won't even begin to tell you what that did to my digestive system, I didn't have any problem going to the bathroom when I mixed those chips with laxatives. MAN was I a mess, it is a shame that you don't realize what you are doing to yourself until you look back on it later. I do still eat them on my free days though, they are better for you than the full fat ones I feel. --- ribar <ribar@...> wrote: > I like 'em too. :-( > Rita > Re: [body for Life Women's > Club] > > Phen-fen (Rita) > > > > > > > > > > > > In a message dated 6/21/2002 1:51:41 > AM > > Eastern Standard > > Time, > > > > no_reply@y... writes: > > > > > > > > > > > > > Oh, my god, Rita, I didn't realize > that > > you had gone > > through > > > such a > > > > > terrible addiction. Guest guest
I agree with you . I think I need therapy on top of everything else, I still have a warped body image. When I tell people that I am doing BFL they all say " you don't have any weight to lose " It makes me want to scream. It's not about losing weight but to me, its about my being fit, physically fit and living healthier. Yes, I want to gain muscle, I want to tone, I want to look HOT! But it's more than that. It kills me that people see certain images of you and that's it. Guest guest
Your knowledge - their loss. People are weird that way ... they see what they see and there ain't nuttin you can do about it. You just stick to your plan and THEN we'll see what they have to say! Guest guest
A " skinny " friend of mine recently asked me about BFL and after I explained it her response rather irritated me. She made lots of reference to how all her girlfriends are getting into exercise programs and perhaps it was due to all the pressure society puts on women to look good, etc., etc. She then went on to say that she's not concerned about weight (as in the number) and feels good that she just eats well (mostly vegetarian) and gets lots of exercise. The reason it irritated me was that first of all she's never had any weight that she's had to try to get off, so exercising and eating well is a bit different when you're not trying to lose, and second, that the assumption is so often made that an intense exercise/nutrition program is always about losing " weight " . It's about so much more than that to me (and anyone on BFL I'm sure) and I get so annoyed when it's assumed that it's all just about a number on the scale. Anyway, as I said, I found it a bit annoying. I'm not really sure if there was any reason to, but thought maybe you all could relate. Guest guest
I agree, Kim, BFL is about a lot more than just losing weight. The thing I always hated to have people say to me was, " Oh, just be happy. You only live once. Enjoy yourself! " As if enjoying myself had to mean gorging on chips and donuts, as if I couldn't enjoy myself eating healthy, working out and looking my best. People have this attitude that a free-for-all pig-out fest is " fun, " but I think looking lean, feeling good, having a ton of energy, and being in great shape are all things that are, ultimately, a lot more fun than stuffing my face with junk and sitting on my ass on the sofa.
