When do you need to have them done? Do you have to paint them or anything

special? Maybe if it isn't too expensive, you could buy another mold.

Oh, no, Colleen! I didn't mean to sound like a soap snob. Heaven knows, I

haven't been doing this for very long myself---only about 2-1/2 years. I was

referring to the way some unpleasant people seemed to guard their beloved

recipes although there wasn't anything incredible about what they were

guarding. In fact, I don't use a ton of ingredients myself. I've settled on

a few soap recipes that seem to balance out exactly the way I like them, and

I wouldn't expect anyone else to use, say, wenge fruit nut oil, either. In

fact, the ingredients you mentioned are very close to mine, too.

I was just musing over the unhappy psyches of some other craftspeople, such

as the guy who responded, " I don't want to talk to you about soapmaking. You

might compete with me. " I see the chance to meet other soapers as something

like journeying to a candy store. So much variety, so many ideas, so many

points of view, so much fun! I guess it's the hostile responses I

occasionally get from (not list) people that baffle me.

When I was a small child, I had a habit of approaching strangers and asking,

" Wanna play? " I'll never forget the girl who looked at me and said, " No. I

already have enough friends. " LOL!

I wasn't accusing anyone of being a soap snob, LOL! I just wanted to

make sure members know that there are lots of lurkers here & we never

know if one of them is the " nasty " soapmaker being discussed. I know

shows weren't specified, but if a lurker knows where the member is

from they may be able to figure it out. LOL, I didn't mean to sound

like a know-it-all either! Just wanted to make sure we all continue

to play nice.

Okay, now back to my 200 purse order. I've got 70 done so far, not

Hey Beth! The lady doesn't need them until January. I've got to

paint the details on them. And yup, I have contacted the person I

bought the mold from to see about getting 2 more. He said he had to

make them, so I continue along one purse at a time as I wait. :)

That made me giggle, Diane! Great way to remember your aunt. :-) I'm so

glad that so much of the soaping community is so open to sharing; otherwise,

where would we be?

Hi Geri, I wonder if its the same woman I ran into last year?

Sorry folks, newbies can be open and warm, and experienced soapers can be as

nasty as you like. It has nothing to do with ingredients lists or

experience, though I have found that the nastiest people really don't have

as good an understanding of soaping as they think. This is easy to

understand, they don't share, they don't learn, and since they don't talk to

the rest of us, they have no idea how much we know. Or how little they

know.

There are warn, open, sharing people, and there are people who can't get

past the me vs. them concept. These are the people who wouldn't join any

organization or trade group unless they needed to by law. The idea that the

entire craft would benefit from us working together escapes them. Or maybe

it doesn't. Maybe they would just prefer to let us grow the craft while

they think they can sit back and reap the benefits. Or maybe they really

can't see beyond the individual, them.

My Aunt, may she rest in peace, used to have a term for this - stinkin

thinkin. I understand you don't want stinkin thinkin here, just positives.

But when one of us meets one of these negative people, its a real downer,

and where can we go to release steam? Here! All the positives in the world

won't change the fact that the world has negatives. It helps to have a

place to vent and recharge.

I'm certain there are lurkers on this list who are feeling just not yet

ready to post. There may be some that are interested in taking and not

sharing. If so, some of them may well come to understand how the more you

give back, the more you gain. If not, they at least are interested in

expanding their knowledge. But the woman I met, and it sounds like the

woman Geri met would find us beneath them. Joining us would mean that

someone might know something they don't.

Even if one or both of these women were on the list, there is no reason to

not express our disappointment in having met one of them. Let it be known

how their behavior is inappropriate. If they don't agree with a post,

they're welcome to express their views.

Ok, no more stinking thinkin.

Diane, and everyone- When I posted asking that we remember there are

lots of lurkers & one of them might be the nasty soaper being referred

to, I was only trying to give a friendly reminder not to start

slamming others. I agree that we are all free to give our opinions.

However, we've always had a rule on our list not to slam other

soapers/suppliers, etc. I'm not saying anyone here was doing that, I

just wanted to stop it before anything really negative got started.

As long as our discussions are general and not aimed at anyone, I have

no problem with that. It's when we start referring to particular

people, places, etc. As a co-list owner I just felt the need to

interject in the conversation.

Please feel free to discuss the topic, just keep others feelings in

mind. Thanks!

" Never say 'can't' when there's a 'How About This' still to be tried! "

RE: Re: About the nasty folks

Hi Guys - Just wanted to weigh in on this with another possible

perspective.

I know we'll never know what some people are thinking and rude behavior to

those of us who can't imagine acting that way ourselves can make these

experiences sting.

I have met other crafters though the years - I did my first show in 1980

when I made band boxes (now known as hat or gift boxes). There were those

of

us who were quite free with giving out information and those who kept

their

" Secrets " close to the chest. I had to let my business go when my Ex left

the kids and I and I had to return to work FT to support us (Yes he was

the

stereotypical " Deadbeat Dad " )

Anyway, here it is years later and I find myself remarried with 2 grown

children and back doing what I love - soaps, toiletries and candles. But

the

atmosphere has changed -the advent of computers has allowed for the

dissemination of information and camaraderie unparalleled in time. On our

lists we freely exchange information and friendship.

But some do not have the luxury of a computer and therefore guard their

" secrets " jealously, totally unaware that thousands of others have the

same

info - it is not as unique as they thought! All they know is in the beauty

world we are told all recipes are deep dark secrets known only to a few

with

many others trying to " break the code " and steal it. When you have

something

good - hide it!

We know all we have to do is read the ingredients label and we can

duplicate

or mimic the recipe. Our computers give us access to all kinds of

information and how to use it!

I am amazed how long it took me to find all the wonderful groups I

participate in now on a daily basis. My wealth of information seemed

miniscule once compared to the collective wisdom I've been privileged to

tap. My product line, not to mention the quality, has greatly improved. I

have made some delightful friends to boot.

I know this doesn't really solve anything and I know we'll always have

those

who challenge our good natures, but maybe it'll help me remember how good

I

have it - with all of you! Y'all are a blessing to me!

Hugs,

Barbara G
