He is way too young for heart trouble. I've heard of Dean Ornish's diet, but haven't tried it. It seems like a very sensible program, though. I wish you the best on trying to get him on a healthier path. Beth
Guest guest
Colleen, I'll say prayers for you & your family. Wow, what a crazy thing to go through @ only 35. The blessing is that this is being caught while major damage is still preventable. Living without cheesecake & potatoe chips is a small price to pay to spend your life with those you love. I'm so glad you are being given a 2nd chance. Blessings & ((Hugs)), Tammy www.ElementsBathandBody.com
Guest guest
Our prayers are with you... hope everything turns out fine in the end... know that we are thinking about and you.. Sam -- OT- in hospital Hi All! As some of you know, has been having chest pains for about a month now. He's spent time at the ER, had an ultrasound, lots of blood work & x-rays, and he had a stress test last Thursday. Until then, we thought he was having gall bladder problems. However, the stress test showed he had severe blockage in his heart. Given the stress of only being 35, having no family history of heart problems, he had a very anxious weekend. He had an appointment with a cardiologist today to discuss his options. He ended up going to the ER this morning instead. This afternoon he was brought to another hospital by ambulance for a heart cath. While in there they put in two stents to open up his blocked artery. From what I understand, he should be coming home tomorrow. I only talked to the doctor briefly after the procedure. He said that will be on cholesterol and heart meds for the rest of his life, he'll have to change his diet & exercise. If he doesn't follow the rules, he could die before he hits 50. Talk about a shocker! The cardiologist recommended that he follow Dean Ornish's diet for heart disease reversal. Has anyone ever heard of this, or done it? I told him we'd done the South Beach Diet before he started having all the pains. He said that could probably do that if the other diet was too drastic for him. Soooo, I just wanted to let everyone know what was going on here so you understand why I am not posting much. I'll update when I know more. Guest guest
Been there, done this- my dad. Many years. For us- and we were spread throughout the States & Switzerland- one of the best things we did was to immerse ourselves in the diet/exercise/support group stuff. We worked as a team, and by developing individual relationships with other people in the Heart community, we extended our emotional & resource support systems. Mended Hearts is a wonderful program. When we went through this, the whole family was 'paired' with MH members. [We were in different states/countries, also.] Dean Ornish may have Support Groups in one form or another nearby. Again- well worth it, as the psych/emotional side of this can get tough at times. I think they also have 'diet clubs'- 'diet' as in program. People get together for social dinners & exchange recipes. <g> Ornish's book is available everywhere- Amazon, too. Probably do better running out to the local bookstore in Greenville. Expect to spend a lot more time & buy a lot more in the veggie aisle. Have kids checked out by pediatrician. Get a 2nd opinion at a nearby, bigger medical facility- one affiliated with a medical school, and that does bypass surgeries by the dozen every week. You're close-enough to a number of super high- level cardiac centers. The 2nd opinion will most likely confirm the 1st. If it was a hangnail, one opinion would be fine. Your doctor probably wouldn't be at all upset to hear you'd like a second opinion- it's quite common. It's important to be 'double-y' hooked- in to the system. Been there, done that. My dad had several doctors, hospitals who stepped in during a crisis. Heck- see if you're eligible for any special gym memberships. Ask if any local athletes are cardiac patients, also. They can be a wonderful source of inspiration! It can be hard to strike the right 'balance' in personal lives, for a while. Expect that. Hell of a scare! Things will even-out, after a bit.
