HI Sue

Check out your local news websites, I know our churches here are having

trucks take down a lot of supplies.

On a personal note Mike's (hubby) brother is now housing all of his in-laws,

looks like 10 and more are coming to Memphis so I sent Robbie a check to

help feed them all or for whatever they might need. My sister Beth is also

sending Robbie a gift cert. to Walmart for his new " large " family :) Im hoping

more of my sibs will help Robbie out. Mike's parents are in no shape to help

Robbie so I hope my family steps forward. I know my SIL's sibs have lost

everything, they all were from New Orleans.

Im hearing our Country Music stars here in Nashville are also starting

fundraisers, I love this

Subject: Support Katrina Fund

September 1, 2005 Dear Friends:  Like all of you, we have been terribly

saddened and distressed to see the devastation caused by Hurricane Katrina in

Alabama, Louisiana and Mississippi. We share your deep concerns for the many

people

affected by this tragedy, including individuals with Down syndrome and their

families in these areas.  We have heard from Scallan from the Down

Syndrome Association of Greater New Orleans, who reports that many of their

members

have lost their homes and are now in Texas, Tennessee, Florida and other

locations. She is working to track down people they have not spoken to yet.

thanks everyone for their prayers and thoughts!   Sherman from the Mobile

Area Down Syndrome Support Group is also working to reach out to members in

their area who have been displaced by the hurricane, and also expresses her

appreciation for everyone’s concern.  We have reached out to Kim Duffy at the

Gulf Coast Down Syndrome Society, but have not heard back from her yet.  The

National Down Syndrome Society (NDSS) has established the Katrina Fund for the

Down Syndrome Community, which will be a temporary fund to raise money for the

Down Syndrome Association of Greater New Orleans, the Gulf Coast Down Syndrome

Society and the Mobile Area Down Syndrome Support Group.  NDSS has made an

initial contribution of $3,000 to the fund, and we invite other interested

individuals and groups to donate to the fund either online HERE <http:

//join.buddywalk.org/site/R?i=zCXLYA3j1RFT9cc4y3iNmg..>  or by mailing a check

to NDSS at 666

Broadway, 8th Floor, New York, NY 10012. All checks should include “Katrina

Fund†on the memo line. The deadline to contribute to the fund is September

30.

All monies (100%) collected through the fund will be distributed in October

directly to the affiliate groups in Gulfport, New Orleans and Mobile to support

local people with Down syndrome and their families. Each affiliate group can

decide how to best utilize the funds  by giving cash donations to families in

need, buying books for children, supporting their local group activities since

their Buddy Walks might not take place this year, or anything else that will

be the most helpful!  We realize that even our most generous contributions

will be small in relation to the needs  but they will be large with respect to

the heart of our community. Whatever the amount, the funds will be distributed

in an equitable fashion to the three groups, deferring to their best judgment

about how best to use these funds in their respective Down syndrome

communities.  If you or your group is interested in contributing in other ways

(e.g.

offering housing for displaced families, sending supplies, etc.), we suggest

contacting the affected groups directly. Any offers of assistance for New

Orleans

can be directed to Scallan kscallan@..., copying Mike Rapier

(DSAGNO@...). We will post updated information about the other groups on

www.NDSS.org as it is available. Thank you in advance for opening your hearts to

the

many members of our Down syndrome family who are facing unbelievable hardships

as a result of Hurricane Katrina.

Sue - hold onto that stuff - it will be needed eventually. Up front everyone

needs money, but as time passes and people need help putting their lives

together and returning to a sense of normalcy, I'm sure your things will be

greatly appreciated. Check with shelters, the armory, the Red Cross, websites

for

local news stations in your local area. (see the Fox channel in Conn.

Sue and others,

I think part of the evacuation plan is to move folks beyond Texas. Our

county received 27 residents of New Orleans yesterday and expect more - and

we are near Washington DC. Our social service agency (where I work) is

developing a response team. I am not on it, but one of my friends is. She

said they emphasized not going to New Orleans - but to prepare to help here.

Our sheriff made CNN yesterday - he sent 22 deputies and 6 EMT's down, only

to be turned away by FEMA.

My husband may be going down to Louisiana, with the Long Island Railroad, to

keep diesel engines running that willk be used for pumping. He will know on

Tuesday if they are going. If he does I may not see him for a couple of months.

I wonder if any of the victims will be heading up North? We have a vacation

home upstate and I said to my husband last night that it's a sin I could not put

some of those people in it until they are on their feet. Maybe I should call

the red cross or someone to see. I wonder how many people have vacation homes,

apartments etc. that they could share?? Just a thought.

Loree,

This is a great idea. I have seen on the news even way over here in AZ that

people are offering their homes to help the victims...some vacant, some with

them still in it.

The Kansas City area has also pitched in. We have many

refugees here as well as 24 critically ill children who were admitted to our

children's hospital. Most were accompanied by at least one parent but 9 of them

have no one with them. Some couldn't be found. Some people are going into

homes but also several shelters have been opened if needed, and landlords are

giving space, rent free. Branson, Mo. has also opened their doors, they have

hotels, etc and there are many jobs in that area. KC has sent many truck loads

of supplies too My donation is going to Heart to Heart. Jessie

Now Loree, would that be a good thing or a bad thing?

I wonder if any of the victims will be heading up North?

Yes, Texas can't take on the burden alone.

Our extra vacation child from this summer is from Mississippi/Louisiana (and

her last name is very cajun!) - Katey said her family lost everything and

her father left to go pick them up and bring them back here to this area. I

can't imagine having experience such an ordeal and then transplanting

myself/family in an entirely different state/culture/community.

I haven't decided lol!! No, I would be worried about him I don't think we

stop and think about how dangerous it really is there. Structures are not

secure. Disease, etc. I do think that you will see more come up North as the

south can only do so much. Our NYPD headed down there yesterday to help.

They will be a great help as they have already been through one disaster.
